Yes—Planet Zoo 2 is Steam Deck Verified as of October 13, 2026. SteamDB’s compatibility record says the default controller layout works, controller icons are correct, interface text is legible, the game runs successfully on SteamOS, and its default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck. That is a strong usability baseline, not a promise of a fixed frame rate in every zoo.

For Windows handhelds, compare the device directly with Planet Zoo 2’s published PC requirements. The minimum calls for 16 GB of RAM, a six- or eight-core-class modern CPU, and a graphics processor around the GeForce RTX 2060, Radeon RX 5600 XT or Intel Arc A750 level. A handheld below those specifications has an uncertain performance case; one that meets or exceeds them has more headroom, although no authoritative model-by-model benchmark is available.

Quick answer by handheld type

Handheld What is established What remains uncertain
Steam Deck Steam Deck Verified; default controls, icons, text, SteamOS operation and default graphics pass the compatibility checks. No universal FPS target, battery estimate, resolution target or late-game zoo result is published.
Windows handheld meeting the minimum PC specification It has a specification basis for running the game and more or less headroom depending on its sustained power limit. No authoritative results for a particular model, wattage, resolution or battery mode.
Windows handheld below the minimum It may launch, but the published requirements do not establish smooth play. Performance, image quality and stability are device- and setting-dependent.

The game’s Steam listing showed a base price of $49.99 when the information was recorded in 2026. Price and availability can change, so treat that figure as a dated listing rather than a permanent price.

What Steam Deck Verified means for Planet Zoo 2

Steam Deck compatibility metadata displayed by SteamDB carries a test record dated September 11, 2026. The record supports several practical conclusions:

#1 Best Overall
Sale
Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner
  • The default controller configuration is fully functional.
  • On-screen controller prompts use the expected button icons.
  • Interface text is legible on the Deck display.
  • The game runs successfully on SteamOS.
  • The default graphics configuration is reported to perform well on Steam Deck.

Those checks matter for a management game. Building habitats, placing paths and navigating menus are all more frustrating when a game expects a mouse and keyboard or presents unreadable text. Verification indicates that you can install the Steam version and use the normal Deck control path without hunting for an unofficial control profile or a Windows installation.

Verification is not a frame-rate certification. It does not state that the game will hold 30, 40 or 60 frames per second in every situation, nor does it define a maximum zoo population. A small tutorial zoo and a mature park filled with animals, guests, staff and scenery can place very different loads on the CPU and memory system. The compatibility record does not publish those scenarios.

Internet, SteamOS and offline play

Planet Zoo 2 needs an active internet connection for first-time setup, according to the compatibility record. Plan the initial launch for a place where Steam can connect and complete any required setup. After that setup, the record states that no internet connection is required for single-player.

That distinction is useful when travelling. Test the game once while online before relying on it offline, and avoid assuming that a fresh install will work on an aircraft or in another location without connectivity. Steam’s own offline mode and any account or update requirements still apply independently of the game’s single-player status.

Published Windows PC requirements

The Steam store lists the following requirements for the Windows version. They are the appropriate comparison point for devices such as a Windows gaming handheld.

Rank #2
VALVE Steam Deck OLED 512GB SSD + 16GB RAM (International Version) - 7.4"" inch, 90Hz, 1280 x 800px, SteamOS 3.0, Handheld Gaming Console, Black
  • International (UK) Version
  • 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)
  • SteamOS 3.0 (Arch-based)
  • 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels), microSD UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC
  • 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32
Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 or Windows 11 Windows 10 or Windows 11
Processor Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
Memory 16 GB RAM Not separately stated in the listing
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB, AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT 6 GB, or Intel Arc A750 8 GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070, AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, or Intel Arc A770-class graphics
Graphics API DirectX 12 DirectX 12
Storage 40 GB; SSD recommended 40 GB; SSD recommended

The 16 GB memory requirement is especially important on handhelds because system memory is often shared with integrated graphics. A device advertised with 16 GB may leave less than that available to the game after Windows and background software reserve their portion. A model with more total RAM can therefore provide more practical margin, but the published listing does not define a separate recommended memory amount.

How to judge a Windows handheld

Start with the graphics processor and VRAM

Compare the handheld’s graphics capability with the RTX 2060, RX 5600 XT or Arc A750 minimum classes, not merely with the product name or a peak boost-clock figure. Integrated graphics can vary substantially with memory speed, cooling and power allocation. Check the device’s actual graphics memory arrangement and its sustained wattage in the manufacturer’s specifications.

A graphics solution below those minimum classes may still start the game, but the store requirements provide no assurance about smooth play. A device near or above the minimum has a more defensible specification case; a model closer to the recommended RTX 3070/RX 6700 XT/Arc A770 class has additional graphics headroom, though handheld power limits can prevent it from matching a desktop card with the same broad label.

Check CPU performance for simulation work

Planet Zoo 2 is a simulation and management game, so the processor matters as a zoo grows. The minimum target is an Intel i7-8700K or Ryzen 5 3600, while the recommended target rises to an i7-10700K or Ryzen 7 5800X. Compare sustained multi-core performance, not just the number of cores printed on a box. A thin device may briefly boost to a high clock and then reduce power when its cooling system saturates.

Do not overlook memory and storage

Reserve at least 40 GB of free storage and prefer an SSD, as the listing recommends. Leave additional room for updates and saved games rather than filling the drive to its limit. Confirm the handheld has 16 GB of RAM or more and remember that Windows, the launcher and other applications consume part of it.

Rank #3

Account for screen, controls and cooling

Resolution changes the graphics workload, while a higher-refresh display can make frame-time variation more noticeable. Controls also matter: detailed construction can be slower with a small stick or touch interface than with a mouse. Finally, compare sustained cooling and power modes. Two handhelds with similar advertised chips can behave differently when one can maintain a higher power limit without overheating or becoming uncomfortably loud.

What performance can you expect?

There is no responsible FPS number to quote from the available authoritative information. No independent frame-rate test, battery-life measurement, resolution result or late-game zoo-size statistic has been published in the sources used here. The official store page also showed no user reviews at the time of capture, so there is not yet a mature community performance consensus to substitute for testing.

Use this decision framework instead:

  • Steam Deck: treat Verified status and the “default graphics configuration performs well” statement as evidence that the standard experience is usable. Do not translate that wording into a guaranteed 60 FPS or assume a very large zoo will behave like a small one.
  • At or above minimum on Windows: the hardware has a credible basis for running the game. Expect to experiment with resolution and graphics settings if the device’s power limit is lower than a desktop equivalent.
  • Below minimum: regard the purchase as speculative. The game may launch, but neither smoothness nor acceptable image quality is established by the requirements.
  • Near recommended hardware: there is more headroom for visual settings and simulation growth, but handheld thermals, battery mode and screen resolution still determine the result.

Preparing Planet Zoo 2 on Steam Deck

  1. Free the storage: confirm that at least 40 GB is available on the internal or selected SSD, with extra room for updates.
  2. Install from Steam: use the normal SteamOS installation path. Verified status means you should not need a Windows partition or an unofficial compatibility layer for the baseline experience.
  3. Launch while online: complete first-time setup with an active internet connection.
  4. Keep the default profile initially: start with the configuration covered by the compatibility record so you have a known baseline.
  5. Check controls and text: open the menus, rotate the camera, place a few objects and confirm that prompts and interface labels are comfortable to read.
  6. Test a representative save: a new zoo can hide problems that appear only after the park becomes busy. Try a save with the level of animal, guest and construction activity you expect to manage.
  7. Adjust one setting at a time if needed: change display or graphics options gradually and observe frame pacing, readability and control response rather than chasing an unverified FPS target.

Keep SteamOS and the game updated before diagnosing a problem. A one-off hitch during shader preparation or an update is not the same as sustained slowdown, so judge performance over several minutes of normal play.

Preparing a Windows handheld

  1. Confirm the operating system: the listed requirements specify Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  2. Compare the complete specification: check the CPU, graphics processor, available memory and storage against the table above.
  3. Install on an SSD: reserve 40 GB plus update headroom.
  4. Choose a sustained power profile: a short high-performance burst is less useful than a mode the cooling system can maintain.
  5. Update drivers and Windows: graphics and chipset drivers can affect DirectX 12 compatibility and frame pacing.
  6. Test at the device’s native resolution, then make controlled changes: record whether a change improves smoothness without making menus or construction details difficult to read.
  7. Test both a small and a developed zoo: simulation load can rise as the park gains animals, visitors, staff and scenery.

Large zoos and the limits of a compatibility label

A zoo simulation’s workload is not fixed. More animals require more behaviour and care calculations; more visitors add movement and needs; staff, shops, habitats and scenery add further objects for the game to manage and render. That is why a compatibility label should answer “Can I use this device?” rather than “What will every late-game park run at?”

For a handheld purchase, CPU performance, memory capacity and sustained cooling deserve as much attention as peak GPU specifications. If your priority is building very large parks, favour a device with headroom above the minimum and a power mode that can be maintained while plugged in. If you mainly play shorter sessions or smaller scenarios, the Steam Deck’s Verified baseline may be sufficient, but the available evidence still does not define a late-game frame rate.

  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Troubleshooting common problems

The game will not complete first launch

Connect to the internet and allow Steam to finish the initial setup. Once setup is complete, test single-player offline before travelling.

Controls or prompts look wrong

On Steam Deck, return to the default controller configuration and confirm that SteamOS and the game are current. On Windows, check whether the handheld’s input utility is presenting a gamepad or mouse-and-keyboard mode, then select the input mode intended for the game.

Performance deteriorates in a developed zoo

That pattern points to simulation or sustained-load limits rather than a simple launch failure. Close background applications, use a sustained power profile, and reduce graphics or display demands incrementally. If the device is below the published minimum, treat the limitation as expected uncertainty rather than a guaranteed settings fix.

Storage runs out during an update

Free more than the stated 40 GB before installing. Updates may need temporary working space in addition to the final game size.

Bottom line for buyers

Steam Deck is the clearest answer: Planet Zoo 2 is Verified, works on SteamOS with the default controls, and is reported to perform well at its default graphics configuration. That makes it a reasonable handheld choice, provided you understand that Verified does not promise a universal frame rate or a specific late-game zoo size.

For a Windows handheld, use the published minimum as a hard reference: Windows 10/11, 16 GB RAM, RTX 2060/RX 5600 XT/Arc A750-class graphics, a modern i7-8700K/Ryzen 5 3600-class CPU and 40 GB of SSD storage. Meeting those numbers gives the device a defensible starting point; exceeding them gives more margin. Without reproducible tests for the exact model, wattage and zoo size, any precise FPS or battery claim would be speculation.
