Yes—open-source office software can replace Microsoft Office for many people, but not as a universal, one-for-one substitute. LibreOffice 26.8 can create and edit ordinary documents, spreadsheets and presentations, open and save DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files, and work without an internet connection. It does not include generative AI, and complex macros, charts, formatting and Microsoft 365 collaboration can still make a migration impractical.
The right choice depends on four things: the fidelity your real files require, dependence on VBA or other automation, the collaboration and cross-application context your team needs, and where any AI service processes document content. Test representative files before changing a work or school workflow.

What “replace Microsoft Office” really involves
Microsoft Office is not only a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation editor. A replacement may also need to handle file exchange, tracked changes, templates, charts, macros, shared storage, simultaneous editing, identity and permissions, and an assistant that can use context from email, chats and other documents. Open-source projects cover these capabilities unevenly.

What LibreOffice 26.8 can replace
Everyday documents, spreadsheets and presentations
LibreOffice 26.8 is the strongest verified open-source desktop candidate in the available evidence. It supports Windows, macOS and Linux, lists 120 languages, and has no feature tier withheld behind payment. The Document Foundation describes it as free software under the Mozilla Public License v2, without advertising, telemetry, subscriptions or an account requirement. The 26.8 feature family was announced on 26 August 2026; version 26.8.1 is a later maintenance update announced on 2 October 2026. Check the official release information for the release you deploy.
Writer, Calc and Impress cover the conventional desktop tasks handled by Word, Excel and PowerPoint. You can work locally, including when a network is unavailable, and keep documents on your own storage. That makes LibreOffice a credible replacement when your files use ordinary paragraphs, tables, formulas, charts and slides rather than Microsoft-only features.
Open formats and Microsoft formats
LibreOffice uses OpenDocument Format (ODF) as its native format. ODF is ISO/IEC 26300, an open standard maintained by OASIS. The suite also reads and writes DOCX, XLSX and PPTX, which are the formats most often exchanged with Microsoft users. If a recipient will continue editing in Microsoft Office, saving a copy in the expected Microsoft format and inspecting the result in that application is safer than assuming a successful export guarantees identical appearance.

The chart behavior illustrates why “supports XLSX” is not the same as “has complete Excel feature parity.” A chart definition may be retained so that it returns to Microsoft Office intact, while remaining unavailable for editing during the LibreOffice portion of the workflow.
VBA and other macros
Microsoft Office and LibreOffice generally use different object models and APIs, so the same macro code cannot normally run unchanged in both suites. Recent LibreOffice versions can run some Excel VBA scripts when the relevant feature is enabled, but that is not a compatibility guarantee. The LibreOffice guidance on Microsoft Office files recommends testing actual macros.
There is a limited preservation path: if you change only ordinary content and do not edit the macros, VBA code can remain in a Microsoft Office-format file and run when that file is reopened in Microsoft Office. That does not make the macro executable inside LibreOffice, nor does it protect against changes to references, controls or workbook structure.
Does LibreOffice have built-in AI?
No. The Document Foundation states plainly, “LibreOffice 26.8 contains no generative AI features.” This is a product design choice, not an assistant that is disabled until you turn on a setting. LibreOffice also does not require network access and says documents are not transmitted to a remote service for processing.

You can use an external AI service beside LibreOffice—for example, to draft text or explain a formula—but that creates a separate data flow. The privacy, retention and training terms of the external service then apply to anything you paste or upload. Local editing in LibreOffice does not make a separate cloud AI interaction local.
What about other open-source or open products?
A search-result summary for Collabora Office 26.04 describes AI assistance in Writer, Calc and Impress and says document access is zero by default and shared only by user choice. The vendor page could not be independently opened for verification here, so do not treat the summary as confirmation of supported models, hosting choices, inference location or configuration controls. If integrated AI is a requirement, verify those details in the current official documentation for the exact build and deployment you intend to use.
Why Microsoft 365 Copilot can be a different category
Microsoft describes commercial Microsoft 365 Copilot as coordinating large language models with Microsoft Graph data that the user is permitted to access and with Microsoft 365 applications. In that design, the assistant can use relevant emails, chats and documents alongside the file currently open. That cross-application context is not provided by a standalone offline editor.

Microsoft’s commercial documentation says, “Prompts, responses, and data accessed through Microsoft Graph aren’t used to train foundation LLMs, including those used by Microsoft Copilot.” This is a stated commitment for commercial Microsoft 365 Copilot; it should not be generalized to every consumer AI product or every account configuration. Consumer subscription behavior is different again. Microsoft’s subscription FAQ says Copilot is available in Personal, Family and Premium plans. AI features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Designer included with Family and Premium are available only to the subscription owner, not other members sharing the plan. Copilot in Excel requires AutoSave and OneDrive. These plan details can change, so confirm the current terms before making a purchase or migration decision.

No comparable primary-source benchmark establishes migration success, market share, task performance or total cost between these approaches. A project statistic is not a quality score: the LibreOffice 26.8 release page reports 206 contributors, including 155 volunteers, which describes release participation rather than adoption or support response times.
A safe migration test you can run before committing
- Inventory real work. Select current documents, workbooks and presentations that represent your busiest and most complicated cases. Include at least one file with tracked changes, a chart, an embedded object, a custom font and an external link if those occur in your work.
- Preserve originals. Make read-only copies before opening or converting anything. Keep the original Microsoft-format files as the comparison baseline.
- Open, edit and save. In LibreOffice, open each copy, make the normal edits your workflow requires, and save in the format your collaborators will receive. Do not test only a blank document.
- Reopen in the destination application. Check pagination, styles, headers and footers, comments, tracked changes, formulas, print areas, charts, animations and embedded media in Microsoft Office or the other application used by recipients.
- Exercise automation separately. Run every critical VBA procedure, button, data connection and protected-sheet action. Record which steps fail, not just whether the workbook opens.
- Test collaboration and hand-off. Have another person review and edit the exported file. Verify that comments, change tracking, permissions and version history meet your process.
- Set a format policy. Use ODF when everyone can support it. For Microsoft-centered exchanges, choose the required DOCX, XLSX or PPTX format, retain originals and perform a final inspection in the recipient’s application.
Common failure modes and practical responses
The file opens but the layout changes
Different font availability, style definitions, section handling and object placement can alter pagination or slide composition. Install approved fonts where licensing permits, compare the exported file page by page, and make the final correction in the application that will deliver or print it.

A chart is present but cannot be edited
Some newer OOXML chart definitions are preserved without being displayable or editable in LibreOffice. Keep the chart in its original file, avoid altering it in the intermediate application, and perform chart edits in Microsoft Office when that is the required tool.
A macro stops working
Assume an API or object-model mismatch rather than a damaged file. Test the macro in isolation, identify dependencies on Excel-specific objects or controls, and decide whether to rewrite it, keep that workbook in Microsoft Office, or remove the automation from the migration scope.
The AI workflow exposes sensitive material
Offline editing does not automatically protect text copied into an external assistant. Establish a rule for what may leave the device or organization, obtain the necessary approvals, and use only a service whose retention and training terms satisfy that rule.
Bottom-line decision
Use LibreOffice 26.8 when your priority is a capable, free, offline office suite with open formats and broad Microsoft-file support, and when you can validate your own documents. Keep Microsoft 365 when your work depends on Microsoft-specific macros, high-fidelity complex files, managed collaboration or Copilot’s permission-aware context across applications. Treat any open-source AI option as a separate product evaluation: verify its current features and document-handling path instead of assuming that an open-source editor automatically includes private, local generative AI.
