A 2020 team linked ocean-wave energy harvesting to an electrochemical reactor that converted carbon dioxide (CO2) into formic acid. Under simulated waves, the system produced 2.798 μmol of formic acid per day using energy harvested from a 0.04 m2 water surface. The paper also reports Red Sea field tests, but does not establish that this daily output was achieved in the field.
How the wave-powered system made formic acid
The researchers’ process connected four stages: wave motion supplied mechanical energy, a triboelectric nanogenerator converted that motion into electricity, a supercapacitor stored the electricity, and an electrochemical reactor used it to reduce CO2 into formic acid.

- Harvest wave motion: Triboelectric nanogenerators generated electrical energy from the movement of water.
- Store the energy: A supercapacitor buffered the harvested electricity for the reactor.
- Convert CO2: The electrochemical cell used the electrical energy to drive a chemical reaction that produced formic acid. The journal abstract says the team optimized the energy-storage component and the cell’s operating voltage.
The study describes formic acid as a carbon-based liquid fuel. More precisely, it is the product the researchers demonstrated making from CO2 with harvested wave energy; the result does not show that the system is a ready-to-use fuel supply.
What the reported output does—and does not—mean
Leung and colleagues reported that, under simulated waves, the system produced 2.798 μmol of formic acid per day from wave energy harvested over a 0.04 m2 water surface. Those conditions belong with the figure: it is not a general production rate or a field-production result. See the Royal Society of Chemistry paper.
The abstract separately says that the researchers performed field tests in the Red Sea. It does not say that the simulated-wave daily output was reproduced in those tests, nor does it provide enough detail there to infer field production. The two findings should not be conflated.
The work is evidence that the components can be coupled in a research setup, not evidence of commercial production or deployment at a useful industrial scale. The paper offers design guidelines for scaling up, but the reported experiment does not establish a lifecycle emissions balance, net carbon removal, commercial economics, or long-term durability at sea.
How this differs from another ocean-CO2 study
A separate 2020 proof-of-concept study combined capturing CO2 from oceanwater with electrochemical conversion. It used bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BPMED) for capture before conversion. That is a different system from the wave-driven formic-acid demonstration, which describes CO2 reduction powered by harvested wave energy.
| Study | Approach described | Reported evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Leung et al., Energy & Environmental Science (2020) | Triboelectric wave-energy harvesting, supercapacitor storage, and electrochemical CO2 reduction | Under simulated waves, 2.798 μmol of formic acid per day using wave energy harvested from a 0.04 m2 water surface; the abstract also mentions Red Sea field tests without assigning that output to them. Journal record |
| Separate Nature Communications study (2020) | Oceanwater CO2 capture using BPMED coupled to electrochemical conversion | For that study’s capture step, the abstract reports 155.4 kJ/mol (0.98 kWh/kg CO2) energy consumption and 71% capture efficiency. These are not measurements of the wave-driven system. Journal article |
The two studies address related but distinct parts of the problem. The Nature Communications capture metrics cannot be used to estimate the wave-driven system’s efficiency or carbon performance.

What would be needed to judge practical use
A small simulated-wave production result is not enough to determine whether this approach could deliver a meaningful fuel supply or reduce emissions overall. That assessment would require evidence on matters the cited records do not establish, including sustained output and durability in real sea conditions, the full energy and materials inputs, lifecycle emissions, and the cost and performance of a scaled system.
