Yes, with important Arm-specific conditions. NVIDIA Vera is an Arm-based data-center CPU that NVIDIA documents with Ubuntu Server 26.04. Ordinary Linux-style work—including native applications, Python and JavaScript services, data retrieval, processing, orchestration and sandboxed tool execution—fits its intended role. However, Vera is not an x86 server: software must have an Arm build, be compilable for Arm, or be supported by a validated compatibility layer. NVIDIA’s installation procedure is pre-validated only for Ubuntu Server 26.04, with Ubuntu 26.04.1 or later installation media advised in the guide’s revision history.
What “standard Linux software” means on Vera
Linux is the operating-system environment; the processor architecture determines which binaries and packages can execute directly. Vera uses NVIDIA’s custom Arm-based Olympus cores, so a Linux application compiled for the 64-bit x86 (x86_64/AMD64) architecture cannot be assumed to run natively. An Arm64 (also called AArch64) build is the normal compatibility path.

That distinction affects more than the application executable. Native libraries, language runtimes, container images, kernel modules, installers, monitoring agents and proprietary plug-ins may each need Arm support. A Python program written in portable Python may work unchanged, while a Python package containing an x86-only compiled extension will need an Arm wheel or a rebuild. The same pattern applies to JavaScript services that depend on native Node.js modules, databases with architecture-specific extensions and commercial agents distributed as one-architecture binaries.
Consequently, “runs Linux” is accurate but not a blanket promise for every Linux download. The practical question is whether the complete software stack supports Arm64 on the operating system and kernel used by the particular Vera server.

Which Linux version does NVIDIA Vera support?
NVIDIA’s Vera installation guide documents Ubuntu Server 26.04 as the supported operating system. The guide’s revision history records Vera support on July 31, 2026 and later advises using Ubuntu 26.04.1 or newer installation media. Follow that exact release line when you need the configuration that NVIDIA has documented.
The guide says its installation instructions have been pre-validated only for Ubuntu Server. Other distributions related to or inspired by Ubuntu may work, but that statement is a validation boundary rather than a declaration that every other distribution is impossible. A different distribution can introduce differences in kernel configuration, firmware packaging, device rules, installer behavior, security profiles and driver integration. Treat it as an engineering port that requires your own testing and a support agreement with the system provider.
Ubuntu’s Vera Rubin platform support
In an announcement dated January 5, 2026, Canonical described official Ubuntu support for NVIDIA’s Rubin platform, including Vera Rubin NVL72. Canonical positions Ubuntu 26.04 as the platform environment bringing together the Vera CPU, Rubin GPU and BlueField-4 DPU. That announcement is useful confirmation of the platform direction, while the NVIDIA installation guide remains the operational reference for installing Vera systems.

In a May 31, 2026 technical discussion, NVIDIA described Linux workloads such as native code, Python, JavaScript, data retrieval, result processing and orchestration. These examples indicate that Vera is meant to host familiar services and development tools, not a special-purpose operating system. They are vendor-described use cases, not a certification list covering every application in those categories.
Work that usually maps well
- Arm64-native command-line tools, daemons and services packaged for Ubuntu.
- Portable Python, Java, Go, Rust or JavaScript applications whose dependencies publish Arm64 builds.
- Retrieval, transformation, scheduling and orchestration services that feed accelerator workloads.
- Sandboxed code and tool execution where the sandbox runtime and its images are built for Arm64.
- Storage and cloud-control services supplied as multi-architecture packages or containers.
Work that needs a compatibility investigation
- Closed-source x86_64 executables with no Arm release.
- Applications containing hand-written x86 assembly, x86-only JIT components or binary plug-ins.
- Kernel modules, storage drivers, security agents and observability software that do not list Arm64 support.
- Container images pinned to an amd64-only base image or containing amd64 native libraries.
- Virtual machines, GPU passthrough and other features that depend on platform-specific patches.
Vera hardware figures and what they do (and do not) prove
| Specification or result | What is established | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 88 custom Olympus cores | NVIDIA specification, 2026 | Indicates the CPU resource described for supported Vera systems; it does not certify a particular application’s scaling. |
| Up to 1.2 TB/s LPDDR5X memory bandwidth | NVIDIA specification, 2026 | “Up to” is a platform maximum, not a guaranteed rate for every workload or configuration. |
| More than 1.8× agentic sandbox performance versus traditional x86 architectures | NVIDIA-reported comparison under its stated test conditions | Use as a vendor workload claim, not as a general Linux benchmark or a guarantee for your code. |
The core count and memory-bandwidth figures describe hardware capability. Real throughput depends on software compilation, thread placement, memory access patterns, accelerator use, I/O, virtualization and the exact server configuration. No independent Vera-versus-x86 benchmark establishes a universal advantage for arbitrary Linux applications.
How to check whether an application will run
Use the following process before committing a production workload. It catches architecture problems early and creates a supportable record of what was tested.
- Identify the application’s architecture. Check the vendor’s download page, package metadata or container manifest for
arm64,aarch64or a multi-architecture image. Anamd64orx86_64-only label means there is no native Vera binary. - Inventory native dependencies. List database drivers, language extensions, plug-ins, agents, codecs and kernel modules. Verify Arm64 availability for each one rather than checking only the main application.
- Confirm Ubuntu requirements. Compare the application’s supported Ubuntu releases, kernel range, libc requirements and security settings with Ubuntu Server 26.04 on the target Vera system.
- Choose a build path. Prefer the publisher’s Arm64 package. If none exists, compile from source with an Arm64 toolchain and run the project’s test suite. Record compiler flags and any architecture-specific options.
- Check containers and images. Inspect every image in the deployment, including sidecars and build stages. Select a manifest that includes Arm64 and rebuild images that copy in x86-only binaries.
- Test representative traffic. Exercise startup, upgrades, encryption, storage, networking, accelerator calls and failure recovery. A program that launches is not necessarily production-compatible.
- Confirm support ownership. Ask the Vera system supplier and the software publisher who supports the combination of hardware, Ubuntu release, kernel and application version.
Useful architecture checks on Ubuntu
On an installed system, uname -m reports the kernel machine architecture; an Arm64 system normally reports aarch64. Package metadata, container manifests and the executable file format provide additional confirmation. These checks tell you what was installed, not whether an application has been functionally validated, so retain workload tests as the final evidence.

Installing and operating Ubuntu on a Vera system
Use NVIDIA’s Vera installation guide and the system maker’s platform instructions together. A high-level deployment sequence is:
- Obtain the correct media. Use Ubuntu Server 26.04.1 or later media as advised by the guide, and verify that the image and firmware requirements match the Vera platform supplied to you.
- Update platform firmware. Apply the system vendor’s approved firmware, boot components and board configuration before installing the operating system.
- Install Ubuntu Server. Follow the Vera-specific boot, storage and network steps in NVIDIA’s guide rather than applying a generic x86 server recipe.
- Apply the supported updates. Bring Ubuntu packages and the platform software to the versions approved for the system, then reboot when the kernel or firmware requires it.
- Install application dependencies. Select Arm64 packages and repositories. Build any source components on an Arm64 build environment, and keep build artifacts tied to the exact release.
- Validate devices and services. Check networking, storage, accelerator visibility, time synchronization, monitoring and security controls before loading production data.
- Record the baseline. Save the Ubuntu point release, kernel, firmware, drivers, container digests and application versions so that later upgrades can be reproduced or rolled back.
Do not infer support for an alternative Linux distribution merely because its package manager can install an application. The documented installation path, tested kernel and vendor support policy matter when diagnosing a failure.
Virtualization, GPU passthrough and patches
NVIDIA publishes Vera-specific I/O virtualization patch and configuration guidance. Its documentation lists GPU passthrough and notes that additional dependent patches may be needed in some cases. This means a virtualized deployment should be planned as a platform integration project, not treated as an ordinary desktop virtualization setup.
Questions to answer before enabling passthrough
- Which host kernel, hypervisor and firmware versions are approved for the Vera system?
- Are the required I/O virtualization and dependent patches available for the exact Ubuntu point release?
- Will the guest receive an Arm64 virtual CPU and an operating-system image built for Arm?
- Does the GPU driver stack support the intended guest model, reset behavior and multi-tenant isolation?
- How will upgrades preserve the patch set and recover the host if a device assignment fails?
A guest can be perfectly compatible with Linux and still fail because the host’s device-assignment configuration is incomplete. Test cold boots, reboots, migration (if offered), device reset and error recovery before production use.

Common compatibility failures and fixes
An x86 binary will not start
Symptom: the shell reports an execution-format error or the service exits immediately. Cause: the executable or one of its native libraries targets x86. Fix: obtain an Arm64 release, rebuild from source, or redesign the deployment around a supported architecture. Do not treat an emulation workaround as equivalent to native support without measuring its behavior and checking licensing.
A language application starts but a dependency fails
Symptom: Python, JavaScript or another high-level service launches until it imports a package or loads a plug-in. Cause: a compiled extension, browser engine, database driver or cryptographic module lacks an Arm build. Fix: install an Arm64 wheel or package, rebuild the extension, or replace the dependency with one that publishes Arm artifacts.
A container deploys the wrong image
Symptom: a deployment pulls an image but fails during startup. Cause: the tag resolves to amd64-only content or an internal layer contains x86 binaries. Fix: use a multi-architecture manifest, select the Arm64 variant explicitly where supported, and rebuild all internal layers for Arm64.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA virtual machine cannot access the GPU
Symptom: the guest boots but the accelerator is missing or unstable. Cause: missing Vera I/O virtualization patches, an unsupported host/guest combination or incomplete device-reset configuration. Fix: return to the platform-specific patch and configuration procedure, verify versions, and involve the system vendor before changing production hosts.
Best Value
An alternative distribution behaves differently
Symptom: an installer, driver or service works on one Ubuntu point release but not on another distribution. Cause: NVIDIA pre-validated its installation instructions only on Ubuntu Server, while kernels, firmware packaging and security defaults differ elsewhere. Fix: reproduce the issue on the documented Ubuntu release, or obtain explicit validation for the chosen distribution from the hardware and software vendors.
How Vera compares with an x86 server for Linux deployment
| Decision area | Arm-based Vera | Conventional x86 server |
|---|---|---|
| Native binary format | Arm64/AArch64 | Usually x86_64/AMD64 |
| Documented OS path in this context | Ubuntu Server 26.04; guide pre-validated there | Depends on the specific platform and vendor |
| Existing x86-only application | Requires an Arm build, source rebuild or validated compatibility approach | Usually runs natively when compiled for x86_64 |
| Container requirement | Arm64 image or multi-architecture manifest | amd64 image is commonly available |
| Virtualization planning | Check Vera I/O virtualization patches and dependent patches | Use the platform’s documented virtualization stack |
This is an architecture and validation comparison, not a claim that one CPU family is faster for every Linux job. The right choice depends on your application portfolio, Arm build pipeline, accelerator use, support contracts and tolerance for migration work.
What to ask a system vendor before deployment
- Is the exact Vera configuration generally available in your region, and which firmware revision does it ship with?
- Do you support Ubuntu Server 26.04.1 or later on that configuration, including the kernel and device drivers?
- Which Arm64 applications, containers and virtualization combinations have you validated?
- Are GPU passthrough and the required I/O virtualization patches supported under your service agreement?
- What is the rollback process for firmware, kernel and driver updates?
- Which issues are handled by the hardware supplier, NVIDIA and the application publisher?
NVIDIA has identified Alibaba Cloud, CoreWeave, Meta and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as hyperscaler collaborators, and Dell Technologies, HPE, Lenovo and Supermicro as system makers collaborating on Vera. That collaboration list does not establish a generally available configuration in every market; verify the exact product, delivery date and OS validation with the supplier.

NVIDIA Vera can run standard Linux software and meaningful production workloads, provided “standard” means software available for Arm64 and tested on the supported platform. Start with Ubuntu Server 26.04, use 26.04.1 or later media as advised, and validate every native dependency—not just the top-level application. Vera’s Linux environment is suitable for native services, Python and JavaScript workloads, retrieval, processing, orchestration, sandbox execution and accelerator-adjacent data-center work. An x86-only binary, unvalidated distribution or incompletely patched virtualized GPU setup remains a deployment risk until the vendor supplies an Arm-compatible build and the complete stack passes your tests.
