Can Noise-Cancelling Headphones Damage Your Hearing? An Audiologist Explains Volume, ANC and Safe Listening

Noise-cancelling headphones do not damage hearing simply because they use ANC or Bluetooth. The risk comes from how loud the sound is, how long you listen and how often you repeat that exposure. Active noise cancellation (ANC) can make listening safer only when it helps you keep playback lower.

What actually causes headphone-related hearing risk?

Dr. Amy Sarow, Soundly’s lead audiologist, describes hearing risk as the combined effect of loudness, listening duration and repeated exposure. A short, very loud session can be hazardous, while a moderate level becomes risky when you use it for many hours or repeat it every day.

The World Health Organization (WHO) gives a useful example in its 2026 safe-listening Q&A: 80 dB for up to 40 hours per week, or 90 dB for up to four hours per week. These are weekly exposure examples, not a guarantee that every person is safe at those exact limits. The WHO/ITU 2019 safe-listening standard also uses 80 dB for 40 hours per week as an adult reference mode.

WHO estimates that more than 1 billion people aged 12–35 are at risk of recreational noise-related hearing loss. Headphones are one source of that exposure, alongside concerts, clubs, gaming events and other loud environments.

How loud is too loud for earbuds?

A practical starting rule is to keep your device at no more than 60% of its maximum volume. This is not a decibel measurement: phones, earbuds and headphones produce different outputs, so 60% on one device can be louder than 60% on another. If your device or app reports exposure, an average below 80 dB is preferable.

Dr. Sarow offers a simple real-world check: “So if you have someone in arm’s length from you, you should still be able to hear that person talking to you, if you can’t hear them. That’s a sign it’s too loud.” The check is especially useful when you are listening outside the home, where background noise can disguise excessive volume.

Does ANC protect your ears?

ANC microphones detect external sound and generate an opposing signal, reducing the background reaching your ears. Good passive isolation from a well-fitted seal can provide a similar benefit. With less outside noise, you may not feel the need to turn your music or podcast up.

WHO advises listeners to “Use well-fitted, and noise cancelling headphones to reduce the need to raise volume in noisy situations.” That makes ANC a volume-control aid, not a medical shield. If you raise ANC headphones to an excessive level, the sound reaching your ears is still excessive. ANC does not make loud listening safe or prevent hearing loss.

The American Academy of Audiology states: “We as audiologists know that Bluetooth and noise-cancelling features in headphones or earbuds are not to blame for tinnitus.” Tinnitus and hearing damage are associated with excessive sound exposure and other causes, not with the wireless connection or cancellation feature itself.

How to listen more safely

  1. Set a ceiling. Start below 60% of your device’s maximum volume. Do not treat that setting as a guaranteed safe decibel level.
  2. Improve the fit. Choose eartips or earcups that seal comfortably without pain. A poor seal lets in noise and often leads to higher playback.
  3. Use ANC or passive isolation in noisy places. Planes, trains, cafés and open offices are situations where isolation can prevent volume creep.
  4. Take quiet breaks. WHO suggests a 10-minute quiet rest after each hour in loud entertainment settings. In ordinary listening, regular breaks still reduce continuous exposure.
  5. Protect your ears at loud events and work. Use suitable earplugs or earmuffs at concerts, clubs, construction sites and other high-noise locations.
  6. Monitor exposure when possible. A phone sound-level app can estimate environmental noise. WHO names NIOSH-SLM as an example for environmental levels and hearWHO as a hearing self-check; neither replaces a clinical hearing evaluation.

When muffled hearing or ringing needs attention

Arrange a hearing check if you have persistent tinnitus, repeated muffled hearing, difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds or trouble following speech in background noise. These signs can follow loud exposure, but they can also have other causes that require professional assessment.

Dr. Sarow recommends a baseline hearing test by age 50 for people who have no earlier concerns. Test sooner if symptoms appear or your work, hobbies or entertainment involve frequent loud sound. A baseline gives you a comparison point for future tests; it is not a substitute for prompt care when symptoms are sudden, severe or persistent.

How long can you listen?

There is no single safe headphone duration independent of volume. WHO’s examples show the trade-off: 80 dB is paired with up to 40 hours per week, while 90 dB is paired with four hours per week. Lower playback, shorter sessions and quiet intervals reduce cumulative exposure. If you need to shout or cannot hear someone at arm’s length, lower the volume or leave the noisy setting rather than extending the session.
