Munshi is a promising concept for voice-led shop management, but the public projects using that name do not document an AI clerk that answers incoming phone calls or takes customer orders. They show examples such as recording sales, checking stock and tracking customer credit. Treat phone ordering as an unverified capability, not an available feature.
What the public Munshi projects show
Two separate public projects named Munshi describe voice-enabled tools for small Indian shops. One calls itself a “Voice-first AI assistant for Indian kirana stores and small marts.” Its README lists voice commands for recording sales and expenses, tracking customer credit, checking inventory and shelf locations, and asking for a daily sales summary. A different Munshi mobile assistant lists Hindi voice and text chat, stock management, transaction records, analytics and barcode lookup. These are project descriptions, not independent tests of accuracy, security or business outcomes. The two projects should not be treated as one product or as proof of an established commercial service.
Examples are shop-owner commands, not customer orders
The OpenClaw-style README gives Hindi/Roman-script examples such as “Teen sau rupaye ki chai biki” to record a ₹300 sale, “Ramesh ka do sau udhar likh do” to add ₹200 credit for Ramesh, and “Maggi kahan hai?” to ask for a product’s shelf location. They illustrate shop management workflows; they do not show what a customer can say to place an order by phone.

Does Munshi answer incoming phone calls?
The inspected project descriptions do not document a phone number, carrier connection, call routing, inbound-call handling, order capture, payment flow or order confirmation. They therefore do not establish that Munshi answers customers, accepts phone orders or integrates with a point-of-sale system. A voice assistant that records a shopkeeper’s commands is not automatically a telephone receptionist.
Before relying on a proposed deployment for orders, ask for a demonstration of the complete customer journey: call from an outside phone, speak an order, resolve unavailable items or substitutions, read the order back, confirm delivery or collection details, and get the order into the shop’s actual workflow. The sources provide no measured order accuracy, error rate, savings or customer-satisfaction results for this use case.

Does “local” mean the whole voice system works offline?
No such conclusion is supported by the project descriptions. The OpenClaw-style repository calls its design “offline-first,” lists Raspberry Pi 4 or Android as hardware options, and includes an offline NLP fallback in its project structure. Its setup also asks for an Anthropic API key. That supports an offline-first design claim, not a guarantee that every operation runs without internet or external processing. Questions to ask about data handling
- Does the phone number route to equipment on the premises or to a cloud provider?
- Where do speech recognition, language-model responses and text-to-speech run? Does any audio leave the shop?
- Are calls recorded or transcribed? Who can access recordings and order transcripts, and how long are they kept?
- Can a caller reach a person, and what happens when the system cannot understand or complete an order?
These are deployment checks, not claims about a specific Munshi system or a universal legal requirement. For comparison, UK receptionist provider Monshi says its service collects callers’ numbers, recordings, transcripts and information callers share; its privacy policy, updated 15 July 2026, declares default retention of 30 days for recordings and 12 months for transcripts. It names Retell AI for voice interaction, OpenAI via Retell for responses, and Telnyx for numbers and routing. Those disclosures describe Monshi’s hosted service only; they do not establish how Munshi handles data. Monshi privacy policy
Monshi’s terms describe answering calls, conversing, taking messages and sending them to a business, while excluding emergency and high-security or regulated call handling. That is an example of why a business should inspect a particular provider’s stated boundaries and escalation path rather than infer capabilities from the general phrase “AI receptionist.” Monshi terms and conditions

What hardware is documented—and what it does not provide
The OpenClaw-style README lists a Raspberry Pi 4 or Android phone as hardware options. Its Raspberry Pi sample build names a Raspberry Pi 4B 4GB, ReSpeaker 2-Mic HAT, 3W speaker, 32GB SD card, power supply, case and LEDs. The repository estimates the sample total at about ₹7,100, including approximate component estimates: ₹4,500 for the board, ₹1,200 for the audio HAT, ₹200 for the speaker, ₹400 for the SD card and ₹800 for the power supply, case and LEDs. These are repository-authored estimates, not independently checked current retail prices or a turnkey phone-order build. OpenClaw-style Munshi project README

The listed components support a prototype hardware discussion, but the project description does not list a telephone interface, modem, SIP gateway or call-routing service. A Raspberry Pi by itself does not establish a way to receive public telephone calls. Check board revision, microphone and audio compatibility, power requirements, availability and current pricing before selecting parts.

How to evaluate a phone-order clerk before using it
- Verify inbound calling. Ask the provider to show the number, routing arrangement and a real inbound-call flow. Confirm whether the system can answer external callers rather than only respond to a nearby microphone or app.
- Test the entire order. Use realistic calls with different accents, background noise, product names and quantities. Check variants, availability, substitutions, addresses and collection or delivery instructions.
- Require a read-back and confirmation. Make sure the system repeats the items and quantities in a way the customer can correct before the order is submitted.
- Define the human handoff. Determine how callers reach staff when the system is uncertain, the line drops, stock data is wrong or the request cannot be completed.
- Map each processing step. Get clear answers about audio, transcription, model inference, retention and access. “Local” or “offline-first” alone does not answer these questions.
- Calculate the whole deployment. Include hardware, phone routing, connectivity, software services, setup and ongoing support. The documented prototype parts do not establish the cost of a working telephone service.
Who should consider the concept?
A shop exploring voice-assisted sales records, inventory queries or customer-credit entry may find the documented workflows relevant, subject to testing the particular project. A business that needs automatic customer-call answering should treat Munshi as unverified for that job until a specific deployment demonstrates call routing, order capture, confirmation, data handling and staff escalation. The available project descriptions do not establish comparative performance against hosted receptionists.
