Yes, but only in a narrow sense. Oysters, clams, mussels and scallops can make suitable seawater systems clearer by filtering suspended algae, phytoplankton, detritus, microbes attached to particles and some inorganic sediment. They do not function as a dependable replacement for mechanical or biological aquarium filtration, and clearer water does not prove that ammonia, nitrate or phosphate has been removed. Shellfish move particulate nutrients into tissue, shell, feces and pseudofeces; durable nutrient export generally requires removing that biomass from the system.
What filter-feeding mollusks remove
Filter-feeding bivalves draw water across their gills. Cilia and mucus trap edible particles, which are sorted and swallowed; unwanted material is rejected as pseudofeces. The process physically removes suspended matter from the water column, so the most visible result can be better clarity rather than a dramatic change in every water-test value.

- Phytoplankton and algae: Clams capture phytoplankton, microorganisms and detritus. Oysters and mussels also filter algae and other plankton from the water column.
- Suspended organic particles: This includes fragments of decaying plant and animal material and other particulate organic matter.
- Suspended inorganic particles: Fine mineral sediment and similar particles can be captured along with food.
- Particle-associated microbes: Mussels can remove bacteria and fungi attached to nonliving organic particles, as well as phytoplankton.
- Some particulate-bound nitrogen and phosphorus: Nutrients contained in filtered algae and detritus can enter shellfish tissue or shell while the animals grow.
These are all suspended materials. A tank can look less cloudy while dissolved compounds remain at problematic concentrations. Water clarity is therefore a useful visual observation, not a substitute for testing.
What they do not reliably remove
Bivalves do not directly strip all dissolved ammonia, nitrite, nitrate or phosphate from aquarium water. Their nutrient effect is indirect. They consume particles that contain nutrients, assimilate some of them into new biomass, and release or deposit the rest through feces and pseudofeces. When the animals die, shed material or are left in the system, those nutrients can return to the water as decomposition proceeds.

For that reason, adding shellfish is not an evidence-based way to claim that an aquarium is “nitrate-free,” “purified” or independent of a filter. Biological filtration remains responsible for converting toxic ammonia and nitrite, while water changes, plant or algal uptake and physical export address dissolved and particulate waste through different mechanisms.
Shellfish also do not sterilize water. Depuration—the controlled holding of shellfish in clean seawater to encourage contaminant discharge—requires managed conditions designed to prevent recontamination. Its existence is a reminder that filtration by a living animal is not the same as making water or shellfish safe from every pathogen, toxin or chemical contaminant.
How nutrient processing works
Ingestion and assimilation
When a bivalve captures algae or detritus, part of the nitrogen and phosphorus in that material becomes animal tissue or shell. This is temporary storage from an aquarium-management perspective: the nutrients remain inside the system unless the animal or harvested material is removed.

Feces and pseudofeces
Particles that are swallowed but not fully retained leave as feces. Material rejected before ingestion becomes pseudofeces. Both can settle as biodeposits. Those deposits may be easier to siphon from a bare area, but if they accumulate in rockwork or substrate they add an organic load and can consume oxygen as microbes break them down.
Harvest is the durable export step
In coastal restoration and integrated aquaculture, the clearest long-term nutrient-export pathway is biomass removal. Growing shellfish are taken out of the water, carrying their incorporated nutrients with them. An ornamental aquarium generally has no planned harvest stream, so the nutrient benefit is limited unless the aquarist removes animals or their collected biodeposits and continues normal maintenance.

- UF/IFAS reports that one littleneck-sized clam can filter 4.5 gallons of seawater per day and remove 0.09 grams of nitrogen. The page in the cited material does not display a publication year, so treat these as contextual figures rather than a dated stocking formula.
- UF/IFAS reports that an adult oyster can filter more than 40 gallons per day under controlled laboratory conditions, compared with 3.0 to 12.5 gallons per day in the wild, citing Gray et al. (2021) and Ehrich and Harris (2015). Laboratory rates cannot be transferred directly to a home tank with different temperature, salinity, particle concentration and flow.
- NOAA Fisheries reported 29.7 million pounds of oysters valued at $199 million in 2022. That statistic describes a commercial fishery, not the filtration capacity of an aquarium specimen.
Clearance rates vary with body size, food concentration, temperature, oxygen, salinity, flow, health and crowding. A high number measured in a controlled trial says how much water an animal processed under those conditions; it does not say how many animals a particular aquarium needs.

Oysters, clams, mussels and scallops compared
| Group | Documented filtration role | Practical requirements and risks |
|---|---|---|
| Oysters | Remove algae, organic matter and excess nutrients from the water column; can continue filtering at higher particle concentrations than some other bivalves. | Need suitable salinity, oxygen, flow and particle supply. Density, biodeposits, harvest plans and biosecurity determine whether the service outweighs waste production. |
| Clams | Capture phytoplankton, microorganisms, detritus and suspended particles; seawater aquarium demonstrations show potential clarity effects. | Require compatible salinity, adequate food, oxygen and burrowing space. Buried waste and poor circulation can create local oxygen problems. |
| Mussels | Filter phytoplankton and organic matter and are used as extractive species in integrated aquaculture. | Need attachment or substrate, suitable flow and manageable density. Their nutrient-rich biodeposits require active collection or removal. |
| Scallops | Filter fine suspended particles and serve as extractive species in integrated aquaculture. | Performance depends on flow, food concentration, density and system scale; a home aquarium may not provide the required space or circulation. |
“Extractive species” means animals that take material out of the water as they grow. Fisheries and Oceans Canada describes them as living filters in integrated systems, where their role is planned alongside fish, seaweed, circulation and harvest—not used as a solitary filter cartridge.
Can you add shellfish to a home aquarium?
The cited evidence comes mainly from estuaries, coastal restoration, aquaculture and controlled depuration systems. It does not establish a universal recommendation for adding wild or commercial oysters, clams or mussels to a home aquarium. Any use would be species- and system-specific.

Before considering a bivalve, check all of the following:
- Salinity: The animal must match the aquarium’s marine or brackish conditions; a freshwater tank is not an interchangeable environment.
- Temperature and oxygen: Warm water, crowding and nighttime respiration can reduce oxygen. A shellfish that appears inactive may be stressed rather than “cleaning” effectively.
- Food availability: Clear, nutrient-poor water may not contain enough suspended food to sustain a filter feeder. Adding food to keep it alive can increase the very waste load you are trying to control.
- Flow: The animal needs a continuous supply of oxygenated water and particles, but excessive flow can prevent feeding or disturb its position.
- Space and substrate: Burrowing clams, attached mussels and oysters have different habitat needs. A specimen that cannot maintain its position or burrow normally is not functioning as intended.
- Stocking density: More animals do not automatically mean cleaner water. High density increases oxygen demand, biodeposit production and the consequences of a die-off.
- Quarantine and source control: Shellfish can carry pathogens, parasites, hitchhikers or accumulated contaminants. Isolate new animals and avoid collecting specimens from polluted or uncertain waters.
- Existing filtration: Keep mechanical filtration, biological media, circulation and testing in place. Shellfish should be treated as a supplemental consumer of particles, not as the system’s life-support equipment.
How to evaluate a shellfish trial safely
- Define the problem. Measure ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen before changing livestock. If the issue is dissolved ammonia or nitrite, a bivalve is not the corrective tool.
- Identify the species and habitat. Confirm whether the animal is marine or brackish, attached or burrowing, and whether the aquarium can provide its required substrate and flow.
- Quarantine the animal. Use a separate, fully cycled container with matched water parameters. Observe for abnormal gaping, foul odor, persistent inactivity or mortality before introduction.
- Start with the lowest reasonable bioload. Do not calculate stocking from a laboratory gallons-per-day figure. Begin conservatively and watch oxygen, clarity, waste and animal condition.
- Provide a removal route for biodeposits. Position circulation so feces and pseudofeces collect where they can be siphoned. Inspect substrate and rockwork rather than assuming captured material has disappeared.
- Continue testing and maintenance. Compare test results over time, clean mechanical media, perform scheduled water changes and remove decaying material. A clearer tank with rising nitrate is not an improvement.
- Remove a failing animal immediately. A dead or dying bivalve can decompose quickly and release a concentrated organic load. Do not wait for the next routine maintenance day.
Common misconceptions and their fixes
“Clear water means the tank is clean.”
Shellfish can reduce suspended particles without removing dissolved pollutants. Use water tests and maintenance records, not appearance alone, to judge water quality.
“A clam or oyster will remove nitrate.”
It may incorporate nitrogen from filtered particles, but that is not direct nitrate removal. Without growth followed by biomass or waste export, the nitrogen remains in the aquarium’s nutrient cycle.
Best Value
“More shellfish will solve an algae bloom.”
Algae availability, oxygen and carrying capacity limit filtration. Overcrowding can create more biodeposits and oxygen demand than the animals can safely process. Correct the nutrient source and circulation problem first.
“Shellfish replace a protein skimmer, filter or water change.”
No. Mechanical and biological filtration perform different jobs, and water changes export dissolved compounds that a bivalve does not directly capture.
“Wild shellfish are safe because they filter the water.”
Filter feeders can accumulate toxins and pathogens from their environment. Feeding activity is not a decontamination guarantee; source, quarantine and biosecurity remain essential.
When shellfish make sense—and when they do not
Potentially useful situations
- A properly matched marine or brackish system has persistent suspended particulate material and enough oxygen and food to support a known species.
- The aquarist can monitor parameters, control stocking density and siphon biodeposits.
- The animals are part of a planned aquaculture or integrated system in which harvest provides nutrient export.
Poor candidates
- Freshwater aquariums or systems with unknown salinity requirements.
- New, unstable or under-filtered tanks where ammonia or nitrite is already detectable.
- Very clean tanks with little suspended food, where shellfish would require extra feeding that increases waste.
- Closed displays where dead animals would be difficult to find and remove.
- Any aquarium relying on shellfish instead of testing, biological filtration and routine maintenance.
Bottom line for aquarium keepers
Filter-feeding mollusks are living particle filters. Under suitable conditions they can remove phytoplankton, algae, detritus, inorganic particles and some particle-bound microbes, making water clearer. They process nutrients rather than magically deleting them: material enters tissue or shell, leaves as feces or pseudofeces, and is exported only when biomass or collected waste leaves the system. Oysters, clams, mussels and scallops therefore belong in a carefully managed aquaculture or species-appropriate aquarium plan—not as a substitute for testing, mechanical filtration, biological filtration, oxygen management and water changes.
