Your Kia and Kia Connect enrollment must qualify. If the car is stolen, report it to police first, obtain the official report details, then contact Kia so it can verify the case and coordinate with law enforcement. This guidance covers Kia America’s U.S. service; availability and terms may differ elsewhere.
What to do if your Kia is stolen
- Report the theft to local police promptly. Obtain the official police report or report number; Kia requires a police report to open a recovery case.
- Contact Kia Connect. Use the Stolen Vehicle page in the Kia Access app or Kia Owner’s Portal. Kia’s U.S. support page lists the Call Center at (844) 886-9411, seven days a week, 5 a.m.–6 p.m. Pacific Time. Contact details can change, so confirm them on Kia’s page.
- Give Kia the report details and any other information requested. Kia says its agent verifies the report with law enforcement and checks eligibility before enabling SVR.
- Let law enforcement handle locating and recovering the car. Kia’s terms say location information is provided to police. Do not approach a suspected vehicle or suspect yourself.
- Contact your insurer as part of your claim process. Requirements and deadlines depend on your insurer and location.
How Kia Stolen Vehicle Recovery works
SVR is a case-based service in which Kia Connect technology and Kia agents assist law enforcement. It is not simply a location pin the owner uses to pursue a stolen car. After you report the theft and provide Kia with the police report details, Kia checks the vehicle and subscription prerequisites, verifies the report with police, and works with the agency on recovery efforts.

Kia lists possible capabilities such as vehicle tracking, horn and lights, lock and unlock, and immobilization or mobilization. Which capabilities are available depends on the vehicle and circumstances. Kia’s terms condition immobilization on the vehicle supporting it and law enforcement requesting it as part of recovery.

Kia also warns that connectivity devices, network providers, and other technologies must work together, so it cannot guarantee location or recovery.

Find My Car is different from Stolen Vehicle Recovery
| Feature | What it is for | How it works in a theft case |
|---|---|---|
| Find My Car | A routine Kia Connect location feature for finding a parked vehicle. | It is not the formal police-coordinated recovery process. Kia says some app and portal location and remote features, including Find My Car, are disabled while law enforcement recovery efforts are active. |
| Stolen Vehicle Recovery (SVR) | A case-based service involving Kia and law enforcement. | Requires a police report and an eligible vehicle and Kia Connect package. Kia provides location information to police under its terms. |
| Stolen Vehicle Immobilization | A capability listed in Kia’s package comparison, subject to vehicle support. | It is not a universal remote control; Kia’s terms say immobilization depends on vehicle capability and a law-enforcement request. |
Kia’s support instructions say a Find My Car location refresh can take up to two minutes on some systems, and available commands vary by vehicle. During an active recovery case, Kia says certain app and portal functions are disabled; if the vehicle is recovered, those functions are restored. If it is not recovered, the subscription may be cancelled when the case closes.
Which Kia vehicles and subscriptions qualify?
Eligibility is not universal. Kia America says vehicles equipped with Kia Connect have SVR technology, but only vehicles enrolled in a qualified Kia Connect package can initiate SVR services. Its U.S. page identifies the Kia Connect Ultimate package and also mentions owners in a complimentary trial period. Kia’s terms describe an eligible vehicle with embedded modem capability and an applicable package.

Kia says a person traveling abroad can report a vehicle stolen if the Kia has Kia Connect and a qualifying package, but an official police report is still required. Do not assume that U.S. service capabilities, fees, law-enforcement procedures, or package terms apply in other countries.

What if your Kia is not eligible?
A separate vehicle tracker is one option to consider if your Kia cannot use SVR or you want a separate recovery system. NHTSA describes vehicle recovery systems as electronic-transmission devices that can help law enforcement locate stolen vehicles. Before choosing one, check its technology and coverage area, subscription and service fees, installation needs, power or battery arrangement, and compatibility with your vehicle. No particular model or improvement in recovery odds is established here.
A steering-wheel lock serves a different purpose: it is a visible deterrent, not a tracking or recovery device. NHTSA discusses theft prevention and recovery systems on its Vehicle Theft Prevention page; Police.uk also describes visible locks as deterrents, but its guidance is UK-specific. Check that a lock fits your vehicle and assess its security rating before buying.

How common is vehicle theft?
NHTSA’s current U.S. Vehicle Theft Prevention page states that a motor vehicle was stolen every 48 seconds in the United States in 2025. That is a national figure, not a Kia-specific theft rate or a measure of SVR performance.
