Yes. IBM Bob’s self-hosted deployment became generally available on September 24, 2026, and runs its backend on a customer-operated Red Hat OpenShift cluster—on premises or in the customer’s cloud account. But self-hosting the backend does not automatically keep model inference or code context local: that depends on whether the organization chooses customer-hosted models or a hybrid connection to an external model service.
What IBM means by self-hosted Bob
IBM packages Bob’s backend for Red Hat OpenShift. The organization operates the cluster, while developers continue to use Bob IDE and Bob Shell; IBM says the underlying agent harness is the same as in its cloud service. The backend includes identity, an inference gateway, audit logging and usage metering. An operator manages installation, upgrades and other day-to-day operations. IBM describes Bob as a namespaced workload that can share a cluster with other applications. (IBM Bob’s deployment overview; IBM’s announcement)
IBM describes two broad model routes: run a supported model on customer infrastructure, or connect the deployment to an approved external model service in a hybrid configuration. In the latter case, the backend can remain on the organization’s OpenShift cluster while model requests and included code context go to the selected cloud service. “Self-hosted” therefore describes where Bob’s backend runs, not a guarantee that every prompt, code fragment or inference stays inside the organization’s network.
Where prompts and code go depends on the model route
| Route | What IBM describes | What to establish before choosing it |
|---|---|---|
| Customer-hosted model | The model runs on customer infrastructure. IBM describes this option for environments without outbound connectivity, including air-gapped use, and names NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Ultra and Poolside Laguna S 2.1 for the fully self-hosted route. | Confirm that the desired model and version are supported, obtain the required model rights, and size GPU capacity with vendor guidance. IBM says sizing depends on factors including quantization, context length and the number of developers served. |
| Hybrid connection to an external model service | The Bob backend, identity, logs and metering stay on the OpenShift cluster, while requests and included code context are sent to the selected service through the customer’s cloud account under its agreements. | Review the model provider’s terms and data handling, the account and network configuration, and exactly what code context is sent for processing. |
IBM’s September 30 announcement names Claude Sonnet 5.0, Claude Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.7 Flash and OpenAI GPT 5.6 Sol among external options, and NVIDIA Nemotron and Poolside Laguna among self-hosted options. Its October 1 post specifies Nemotron 3 Ultra and Laguna S 2.1 for the fully self-hosted route. Model availability can change; ask IBM to confirm the current support matrix and which options apply to the configuration being evaluated. IBM says customers source and provide access to supported models at general availability and describes bring-your-own-license for eligible existing model licenses. That does not establish that every model works in every configuration or is included in a Bob license. (IBM’s model and deployment announcement; IBM Bob’s deployment overview)

Air-gapped deployments
IBM says a fully self-hosted deployment can use customer GPUs and names a small guardrail model that screens inputs and outputs on this route. For installation in an air-gapped environment, IBM says bobctl can mirror images to a private registry, including transfer across the network gap. These are IBM’s described capabilities; organizations still need to validate their own network controls, model artifacts, operational procedures and security requirements.
What installation and identity require
IBM describes a two-stage installation using bobctl. The first stage installs cluster-wide resources, permissions and the operator, and requires cluster-admin access. The second installs Bob in a namespace and requires namespace-level access. IBM says a single-node OpenShift deployment can support a proof of concept; that is not a production sizing recommendation.

For identity, the deployment includes Keycloak and can connect to LDAP or Active Directory so users can sign in with corporate credentials. IBM says smaller installations and proofs of concept can manage users directly in the identity service. Production prerequisites and sizing should be checked against IBM’s installation documentation and the organization’s OpenShift and identity standards.
How to evaluate whether it fits
IBM presents self-hosted Bob as a sales-led offer. Prospective customers can request a demo or proof of concept through an IBM representative, Business Partner or Contact Sales. No public price, detailed production hardware specification, service-level commitment or contract terms are stated in the reviewed announcements. (IBM Bob’s deployment overview)

Optional modernization packages
IBM identifies optional Premium Packages for Java Modernization, IBM i and IBM Z, subject to applicable package licensing and deployment requirements. These are extensions rather than proof that every modernization capability is part of the core Bob deployment. For IBM Z, IBM describes deterministic application understanding, static code analytics, Z-specific context, dependency and business-rule discovery, and modernization workflows, including Application View and zContext capabilities. What self-hosting does—and does not—establish
A customer-operated deployment gives an organization control over the OpenShift environment and the choice between supported customer-hosted models and hybrid external services. IBM positions that control as relevant to sensitive code and regulated environments, but the deployment announcement does not establish compliance with any particular regulation, nor does it guarantee a specific security, productivity or cost outcome. Those depend on the chosen data path, model terms, configuration, operations and the organization’s own controls.
