Usually, yes—but only if Verizon supports the exact new phone and the phone accepts your type of SIM. Check the phone’s model or IMEI with Verizon before moving a physical SIM. If the phone uses eSIM, follow Verizon’s eSIM activation or transfer process instead. An unlocked phone is not automatically compatible with Verizon.
Check the phone and SIM before switching
- Find the exact model or IMEI. Use Verizon’s BYOD compatibility check for the specific phone or variant. Brand name or an “unlocked” label alone does not establish network compatibility.
- Check how the phone takes a SIM. Determine whether it has a physical SIM tray, eSIM, or both. A physical card cannot be moved into an eSIM-only phone.
- Check carrier lock status. A phone locked to another carrier must be unlocked before it can be activated on Verizon. Unlocking and Verizon network compatibility are separate requirements.
- Confirm the SIM can be used in that device. Verizon says an incompatible physical SIM must be replaced; ask Verizon for a replacement rather than assuming the old card will work.
If the new phone has a physical SIM tray
After the compatibility check, power down the phones and move the existing Verizon SIM into the new phone’s tray if the card fits and Verizon considers it compatible. Follow the phone maker’s instructions for opening and seating the tray; do not force the card or use an adapter when the tray and SIM size are uncertain. Once the phone is on, test a call, a text, and mobile data. If service does not come up, recheck the device’s eligibility and SIM compatibility, then contact Verizon for account- or device-specific help. The general transfer guidance does not establish the cause of every activation failure.

An eSIM is provisioned digitally, so moving a physical card will not activate an eSIM-only phone. Use Verizon’s eSIM activation instructions or the transfer flow for the particular phone. Verizon’s Pixel transfer steps apply to supported Pixel devices and should not be assumed to match every manufacturer’s process.

Verizon requires a phone being activated on its network to be unlocked from any carrier other than Verizon. Its guidance says an unlock can take up to 24 hours to take effect for activation. After the eSIM process, verify calls, texts, and data.
Verizon phone lock rules depend on purchase date
For devices purchased from Verizon on or after January 27, 2026, Verizon’s device unlocking policy says the device remains locked until it is fully paid for or applicable contract terms are fulfilled. For devices purchased before that date, the policy describes automatic unlocking 60 days after purchase, subject to conditions including full payment and no fraud flag or lost-or-stolen report. Verizon says this locking policy does not apply to a device you bring to Verizon. Check the current policy and the status of the particular phone; purchase date and circumstances matter.

Physical SIM or eSIM: which route applies?

Verizon’s guidance confirms that a phone without eSIM can still be activated using a physical SIM. The correct path for any particular phone depends on its exact model, IMEI, SIM capability, and account details; those cannot be confirmed from the fact that your current Verizon SIM works.
