Sometimes—but first identify what the cable carries and who owns it. A homeowner-owned communications line to an outbuilding may be suitable for a DIY trench, if local rules and the cable’s specifications allow it. A provider-owned internet, phone, or TV drop should be handled through the provider’s process. In the United States, contact 811 before excavation, check whether private lines need separate locating, and confirm local code and permit requirements. There is no single burial depth that applies to every cable.
First determine whether the line is yours
“Cable line” could mean an electrical feeder, Ethernet, coaxial cable, fiber, telephone wiring, or a provider’s service drop. Those systems have different hazards, specifications, and rules. A private run from your house to a shed is not the same as a utility service or a provider-owned cable entering your home.

Before planning a trench, establish:
- Ownership: Is the cable yours, or does a utility or internet, phone, or TV provider own or maintain it?
- System: Does it carry electrical power or low-voltage communications? What exact cable type and rating does the equipment require?
- Route: Will it cross a driveway, public right-of-way, easement, or area likely to be excavated later?
- Installation method: Is the cable listed for direct burial, or does the installation require an approved raceway?
- Local requirements: Which code edition is adopted locally, and are permits or inspections required?
If ownership is unclear, ask the provider or utility before moving, replacing, or burying the line. Do not treat a cable’s location on your property as proof that you own it.

Request a utility locate
In the United States, contact 811 before digging, even for a small project. The local one-call center will explain when to submit the request and what to do before excavation; wait for the required responses and markings. New Mexico 811 advises homeowners to call “no matter how large or small your project or how deep you are digging” (New Mexico 811 homeowner guidance).

A one-call locate generally covers participating utilities, not every line installed by a homeowner or private contractor. New Mexico 811 and OKIE811 warn that privately owned services may not be marked. Ask your one-call center what its locate covers, then arrange a private utility locator if needed. Homeowners may be responsible for knowing about lines such as secondary services, irrigation, or other private installations (OKIE811 homeowner guidance).
Plan for marked facilities and unknowns
Do not infer a buried line’s depth from paint marks or common installation practice. New Mexico 811 says depth varies and locators do not provide a reliable depth for facilities. Its guidance specifies 18 inches of clearance between the cutting edge of mechanical equipment and the edge of a marked facility in the tolerance zone; that is New Mexico guidance, not a nationwide rule (New Mexico 811).

- Size: Inner diameter: 1/2", length: 120 feet, color: black. Our split loom is split and easy to put wires in.
- High Quality Material: our wire loom 1/2 inch is made of high quality polyethylene. The automotive wire looms are safer, excellent heat resistance can be used under-hood in a car,but away from exhaust manifold.
- Operating Temp: the electrical conduit temperature range -40F To 200F. Preventing and minimizing damage from electrical fires, or heating up of any cables or wires around your home.
- Wide Application: our wire loom cord protector can be used for computer leads, television cables and any other electronic device in and around your home. Great wire tubing for automotive, marine, industrial, office, home etc.
- Easy to Use: cut the length of the pipe to the size you want, then find the slit and put the wire in. Once the wire is insert, the slit will remain closed. This split loom tubing is perfect for indoor or outdoor wire cover.
For safety context, the UK Health and Safety Executive warns that damaged underground cables can cause fatal or serious injury through electric shock, electrical arcs, or flames. Its advice is to plan the work, obtain and review service plans, locate cables with suitable equipment, and excavate carefully. When exposing a service, it recommends digging alongside it and exposing it horizontally; it also advises insulated tools for hand digging near electric cables. This UK guidance does not replace local requirements elsewhere (HSE guidance on underground cables).

Required cover depends on the system, cable and wiring method, location, and locally adopted rules. A direct-burial cable, a cable inside a raceway, and a specified low-voltage circuit may have different requirements. Driveways and other locations subject to vehicle traffic may also be treated differently from ordinary yard areas.

- HDPE offers greater rigidity and durability than LDPE and may be direct buried
- Constructed from HDPE, High density polyethylene, solvent and acid resistant.
- Polyethylene exterior is designed to absorb light to medium impact levels
- Prevents delicate cables and fibers from crush, cut and wear damage and deterioration
- Available in sizes from 1/2 inch to 2 inch in Black and Orange colors.
The 2015 International Residential Code, Table E3803.1, is a dated model-code example—not a universal instruction for a current project. It lists 24 inches of minimum cover for direct-burial cable in locations not otherwise specified, while listing different values for certain conduits, protected installations, and specified low-voltage circuits. Whether that edition or a later one applies depends on local adoption and amendments. Check with your local building department and follow the cable’s listing and installation instructions.
California Public Utilities Commission General Order 128 gives separate cover provisions for communications cables within its scope: 12 inches on sidewalks, parkways, and private property, and 18 inches in thoroughfares. Those are California-specific utility provisions, not a national DIY rule (California Public Utilities Commission, General Order 128).

If the cable belongs to your internet, phone, or TV provider
Contact the provider before trenching or burying a service drop. Ask whether the line is provider-owned, whether the provider will install or repair it, and whether it permits a customer-prepared trench. Confirm the required route, conduit, access, permits, and any property agreement; do not assume that one provider’s procedure applies to another customer or service area.
Published processes illustrate the variation. CenturyLink’s wholesale overview describes a simple buried-service-wire workflow in which a customer may dig the trench and CenturyLink lays the wire; it also says a signed private-property agreement may be required before service installation. That is a specific workflow, not a guarantee for every retail customer (CenturyLink buried service wire overview).

AT&T describes coordinating with utilities and having crews trench and install temporary or permanent cable. Rogers says it may install a temporary line and assign a contractor to bury a permanent one, subject to permits, locates, weather, and access. Check the process for your provider and address rather than burying its cable yourself:
When a homeowner-owned installation may be appropriate
A DIY installation may be reasonable for a homeowner-owned communications run when the route is permitted, underground hazards have been addressed, and the selected cable and installation method meet local requirements. The code and product documentation—not a generic depth chart—should determine whether direct burial or a raceway is appropriate. A raceway does not automatically make an otherwise unsuitable cable or route acceptable.
Stop and get qualified help if the line carries electrical power and you cannot verify the applicable requirements, if ownership is uncertain, or if the route approaches an existing service, public right-of-way, or easement. Permits, inspection, and easement restrictions are local matters; confirm them with the relevant authority or property owner before work begins.
