Can Huawei Ascend Chips Replace Nvidia GPUs for AI Workloads? A 2026 Decision Guide

Sometimes—but not as a general, drop-in replacement. Huawei Ascend systems can support serious AI inference and have powered published large-model research. Whether they can replace Nvidia GPUs depends on your model, training or inference target, software stack, interconnect, procurement options, legal geography and tolerance for migration work. The available evidence supports workload-specific substitution, not universal parity with Nvidia.

What “replace Nvidia” actually means

Replacement can describe three different decisions:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Drop-in compatibility: running an existing CUDA application on Ascend with little or no code change.
  • Workload substitution: porting a particular model and accepting changes to kernels, libraries, deployment tooling and operations.
  • Strategic fleet replacement: making Ascend the default accelerator across many models, teams and sites.

Ascend is a hardware-and-software platform rather than a different brand of the same interchangeable GPU. Huawei’s Ascend processors, CANN software, operator libraries, model tooling, servers and high-speed interconnect all affect the result. A successful deployment on one optimized cluster does not prove that an unmodified CUDA workload will run, or that another model will achieve the same throughput.

What the current evidence shows

Real Ascend deployments and research exist

Huawei says its Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD can contain up to 384 Ascend 910C chips and that more than 300 systems had been deployed to more than 20 customers as of its September 2025 keynote. Those are Huawei-reported specifications and deployment figures, not an independent audit.

A 2025 CloudMatrix384 research paper describes a system with 384 Ascend 910C NPUs and 192 Kunpeng CPUs connected through Huawei’s Unified Bus. In the authors’ DeepSeek-R1 evaluation, the system delivered 6,688 tokens per second of prefill per NPU and 1,943 tokens per second of decode per NPU, with a stated time per output token below 50 milliseconds. These results belong to that model, cluster design, software configuration, precision and serving test; they are not universal ratings for every 910C or Ascend system.

A separate July 2026 field-study preprint evaluates two large inference workloads on a 16-device Ascend 910 setup using CANN and vLLM-Ascend. Its focus on migration cost and operational limitations is important: a platform can produce useful results while still requiring substantial engineering effort.

Independent assessments still put Nvidia ahead overall

Epoch AI’s analysis, updated September 24, 2026, estimates that Huawei’s most powerful chip delivers roughly half the performance of Nvidia’s H100 and that Huawei represented less than 4% of Nvidia’s compute output in 2026. Those are analyst estimates whose methods and assumptions matter; they are not a single controlled benchmark.

A 2025 Council on Foreign Relations analysis estimated a roughly fivefold performance advantage for the best U.S. AI chips over the best Chinese AI chips on its TPP measure. That older policy analysis provides context about manufacturing and supply constraints, but it should not be treated as a current, apples-to-apples comparison of every product released since then.

No single independent benchmark establishes a definitive winner across current Ascend and Nvidia products, model families, training and inference, precision modes, batch sizes and system configurations. The right comparison is therefore a controlled test of your own workload.

Performance: compare systems, not headline chip numbers

AI serving separates into prefill, when the system processes the input context, and decode, when it generates output tokens. A chip or product optimized for one phase may not be the best choice for the other. Training adds still different requirements: sustained utilization, collective communication, checkpointing, restart behavior and scaling efficiency.

Use the same conditions on both platforms:

  • Identical model checkpoint, tokenizer, context length and sequence mix.
  • The same precision or quantization format, including accumulation rules.
  • Equal batch size, concurrency and request distribution.
  • The same throughput target and latency service-level objective.
  • Separate measurements for prefill throughput, decode throughput, time to first token and time per output token.
  • Software versions, compiler settings, kernels and serving framework versions recorded in the result.
  • Usable memory, memory bandwidth, interconnect topology, power draw, utilization and total system cost.

For training, add time to reach a defined loss or quality target, scaling efficiency as devices are added, checkpoint duration, job failure rate and recovery time. A per-NPU result from CloudMatrix384 cannot be directly compared with an H100 result unless those variables and the measurement boundary match.

Software migration: the main replacement barrier

CANN is not CUDA compatibility

Huawei describes CANN as the foundation of Ascend development and has announced tools for operator generation, model adaptation, precision tuning and deployment. Huawei has also announced open-source and developer-tooling initiatives. These show active ecosystem development, but they do not establish that CUDA applications run unchanged or that every specialized library and kernel has an equivalent.

In testimony before a U.S. House committee on April 8, 2025, CSIS senior fellow Gregory C. Allen said: “At present, the combination of Ascend chips (discussed more below) and CANN software appears far from being competitive to CUDA.” He also said migrating all AI workloads from CUDA to CANN would likely be a multiyear project. This is his assessment at that date, not a 2026 benchmark result.

What usually needs inspection

  • Framework integration: confirm support for your exact PyTorch, inference server, compiler and container versions.
  • Operators: list custom CUDA kernels, fused attention, quantization, communication primitives and unusual tensor operations.
  • Model features: check mixture-of-experts routing, long-context attention, speculative decoding, multimodal encoders and retrieval components separately.
  • Numerical behavior: validate accuracy after changing precision, kernel implementations or reduction order.
  • Distributed execution: test collective operations, topology-aware placement and failure recovery rather than assuming Nvidia-style scaling.
  • Operations: verify profiling, monitoring, alerting, container images, firmware updates, replacement parts and vendor escalation.

vLLM-Ascend can reduce some serving work for supported models, but a supported framework does not guarantee support for every model feature or custom operator. The 16-device 2026 field study is a reason to pilot migration on your own workload before changing an entire fleet.

How to evaluate Ascend for your workload

  1. Inventory the CUDA dependency. Record framework versions, custom extensions, kernels, quantization method, communication library, model license and container build.
  2. Select a representative test set. Include your largest model, most latency-sensitive endpoint, highest-concurrency service and at least one training or fine-tuning job if training matters.
  3. Port a minimal path. Start with an officially supported model and standard operators. Keep a separate branch for custom kernels so compatibility problems are visible.
  4. Validate correctness. Compare logits, task metrics, generated outputs, tokenization and safety filters. A faster result that changes model quality is not equivalent.
  5. Measure phase-specific performance. Capture prefill, decode, time to first token, time per output token, throughput at target concurrency and tail latency.
  6. Stress distributed behavior. Increase device count, test all-reduce and model-parallel communication, inject device or process failures and measure recovery.
  7. Calculate operating cost. Include servers, networking, power, cooling, support, engineering time, port maintenance and spare capacity—not only accelerator purchase price.
  8. Run a production rehearsal. Use real traffic patterns, observability, upgrade procedures, rollback images and your required security controls.
  9. Set a stop rule. Decide in advance which latency, quality, reliability, staffing or availability threshold would disqualify a broad migration.

When Ascend is a plausible choice

Inference in a supported model family

Ascend is most defensible when the model already has a maintained CANN or vLLM-Ascend path, your target is inference rather than rapid research iteration, and you can procure a complete supported system. Large deployments can make system-level architecture and local supply more important than an individual accelerator’s headline rating.

Organizations constrained by geography or supply

If Nvidia hardware is difficult to import, license or replenish in your region, an Ascend deployment may be strategically useful even when per-chip performance is lower. That decision still requires confirmation that the system can be legally imported, installed, serviced and expanded where you operate.

Teams willing to own a platform port

Ascend can fit organizations with dedicated compiler, kernel and infrastructure engineers, a stable model portfolio and enough volume to justify maintaining a second software path. The migration is an engineering program, not a driver installation.

When replacement is unlikely to make sense

  • Your application depends on proprietary CUDA kernels or rapidly changing research libraries.
  • You need immediate support for a broad range of new models and third-party extensions.
  • Your service-level objective depends on a specific Nvidia-tested latency or scaling profile.
  • You cannot obtain replacement capacity, firmware support or qualified service in your geography.
  • Your team cannot fund a multiyear port for training code and distributed infrastructure.
  • You are comparing one optimized Ascend result with an Nvidia result measured under different precision, batch, context or latency conditions.

Risks to resolve before procurement

Risk Why it matters Evidence to request
Software gaps Unsupported operators can erase expected performance or block deployment. Operator coverage, issue-resolution commitments and a working build of your model
Interconnect scaling Large-model training and serving can become communication-bound. Topology diagram, measured collective bandwidth and failure-recovery results
Roadmap timing Announced products may slip or launch unevenly by region. Release confirmation, production configuration and delivery schedule
Supply and service A cluster is not useful if spares, support or expansion are unavailable. Regional support terms, spare-parts plan and expansion lead time
Benchmark interpretation Vendor or paper results may not transfer to your model. Reproducible scripts, precision, batch, context, concurrency and latency methodology
Regulatory and legal constraints Import, export, data-residency and procurement rules vary by jurisdiction. Written compliance review for the intended installation and workload

A practical decision rule

Choose Ascend for a broad deployment only if your pilot demonstrates acceptable quality, latency, throughput, reliability and total cost on the models that matter, and if procurement and support are confirmed for every site. Choose a limited deployment when the workload is well supported and local supply advantages outweigh migration cost. Keep Nvidia as the lower-risk default when CUDA compatibility, rapid model turnover, mature tooling or global service coverage are more important than hardware substitution.

The strongest evidence today supports a mixed, workload-specific strategy rather than a blanket switch. CloudMatrix384 demonstrates that Ascend can power a large, tightly integrated inference system; the 2026 field study demonstrates that real migration limitations remain; and independent assessments continue to place Nvidia ahead in per-chip performance and aggregate compute output. Those findings can all be true at the same time.
