Yes—Modern World of Warcraft allows substantial Horde-and-Alliance cooperation. Players from opposite factions can join the same guild, form premade groups for dungeons, raids and rated PvP, and cooperate inside supported instances. Once inside, they can fight together, trade eligible loot and earn shared achievements. The major exception is the outdoor world: opposite-faction guildmates remain Unfriendly there, or Hostile when War Mode is active. WoW Classic uses much stricter rules, and automated queue eligibility can change by activity and patch.

What “play together” means in Modern WoW
Cross-faction play is not one universal switch. Blizzard separates cooperation in instanced content from faction relations in the open world. Your character still belongs to Horde or Alliance, but the game can temporarily treat both factions as allies when they enter a supported instance.

Blizzard’s cross-faction instance design makes mixed-faction groups function much like same-faction groups after they zone in. Members become friendly, can assist one another in combat, trade loot under the normal loot rules, earn shared achievements and otherwise cooperate together. This is the clearest answer to “Can I run a dungeon with my Alliance friend if I’m Horde?”—yes, when the dungeon and group-formation method support cross-faction play.

In the outdoor world
The alliance does not erase faction conflict outside the instance. Blizzard says opposite-faction guildmates remain Unfriendly to one another in the outdoor world. With War Mode enabled, that relationship becomes Hostile. Being in the same guild therefore does not make every outdoor quest, escort or world activity behave like a friendly party.
Which Modern WoW activities support cross-faction groups?
Blizzard’s cross-faction overview specifically identifies these activities as available through Premade Groups:

Blizzard’s 9.2.5 patch notes state that Premade Group Finder listings for Mythic dungeons, raids and rated arena or rated battleground groups accept applicants from both factions. A group leader can still restrict a listing to same-faction applicants, so a mixed group may be legal even when a particular listing chooses not to allow it.

How to run a dungeon, raid or rated match with an opposite-faction friend
- Confirm that both characters are in Modern WoW. Do not use the Classic rules below as a guide for the retail game. Special modes and older versions can have separate restrictions.
- Open the Group Finder and choose Premade Groups. Select the activity category—such as Mythic+, raids or rated PvP—that matches what you intend to do.
- Create or find a listing that accepts both factions. If you are the leader, leave the faction restriction open. If you are applying, look for a listing that does not limit applicants to the leader’s faction.
- Invite the other player before entering. Cross-faction support is built around a premade party. A listing that is marked same-faction-only will reject an opposite-faction applicant even though the activity itself supports mixed groups.
- Enter the instance together. On entry to a supported dungeon, raid or rated PvP match, the game changes the relationship to friendly for the duration of that instance. You can then assist each other, trade loot where the normal rules permit it and contribute to shared achievements.
- Check the result before assuming a bug. If the application fails, inspect the listing’s faction restriction, the selected mode and the current queue requirements before rebuilding the group.
Premade groups versus automated queues
The most common source of confusion is treating “cross-faction instances” as permission for every matchmaking queue. Blizzard’s launch documentation centered on Premade Group Finder listings. That is a player-assembled group in which the leader chooses members before the party enters the activity.
Blizzard Support’s Modern WoW summary describes broader capability, including questing together, queuing for dungeons and battlegrounds, raiding on normal and heroic difficulty and joining cross-realm or cross-faction guilds since The War Within pre-patch. However, queue behavior is sensitive to the game mode, activity and patch. The interface—not an old forum post or a rule remembered from another expansion—is the reliable authority for a specific queue.
When a queue does not work
- Use Premade Groups first. If the activity appears in the premade list, assemble the party manually and enter together.
- Check whether the listing is faction-restricted. A leader can deliberately accept same-faction applicants only.
- Confirm the exact mode. Normal, heroic, Mythic, Mythic+, unrated PvP and rated PvP can have different matchmaking rules.
- Check the current patch and version. A feature available in Modern WoW may not exist in Classic, a seasonal mode or an older client.
- Read the error text. Requirements such as role availability, item level, rating or a missing attunement can look like faction restrictions even when the real problem is unrelated.
Can opposite-faction characters join the same guild?
Yes. Modern WoW supports cross-faction guilds. Blizzard’s guild announcement describes opposite-faction guildmates playing communally inside instances while retaining their normal faction identities.

Guild membership is therefore useful for organizing raids, Mythic+ runs and rated teams, but it is not an outdoor peace treaty. Outside instances, opposite-faction guildmates are still Unfriendly; in War Mode they are Hostile. You should not expect every outdoor interaction, target selection or world event to treat guild members as allies.

Can Horde and Alliance players quest together?
Blizzard Support’s Modern WoW summary says players can quest together. That statement should be read with the outdoor limitation in mind: shared questing is not identical to becoming one faction. Some quests, objectives and NPC interactions remain tied to the character’s faction, and War Mode preserves hostile faction behavior. If a particular objective will not credit both characters, complete the faction-specific step separately and regroup for the portions that permit cooperation.
Modern WoW and WoW Classic are not governed by the same rules
Choosing the wrong game version explains many reports that cross-faction play “doesn’t work.” Blizzard Support distinguishes Modern WoW from Classic Progression and says cross-realm party functionality is unavailable in WoW Classic.

Classic also exists in several forms and receives different feature sets over time. Treat “Classic” as a version label that must be checked in the launcher and in-game interface, not as a synonym for Modern WoW.

Why guildmates can still be hostile
Faction identity remains part of the outdoor ruleset. A Horde character and an Alliance character can share a guild roster and cooperate in an instance while still being treated as opposing players in the world. This is intentional rather than a failure of the guild system.
What War Mode changes
War Mode makes the outdoor relationship explicitly Hostile. Cross-faction guild membership does not suppress that hostility. Before planning an outdoor activity, decide whether both players are using compatible War Mode settings and whether the activity itself allows the cooperation you need.
What “together” does not guarantee
- It does not merge faction capitals, vendors or quest chains.
- It does not make every outdoor NPC or objective friendly to both characters.
- It does not force a group leader to accept the opposite faction.
- It does not make every random queue cross-faction in every patch.
- It does not transfer faction-specific reputations, achievements or progression automatically.
A quick decision guide
- Are you playing Modern WoW? If yes, continue. If you are in Classic, expect tighter limits and check that client’s rules.
- Is the activity instanced? Dungeons, raids and rated PvP are the strongest candidates for cross-faction cooperation.
- Can you form a premade? Use Premade Groups and inspect the listing’s faction setting.
- Is it an automated queue? Open the current queue window and verify eligibility instead of relying on a general statement that cross-faction play exists.
- Will you be outdoors? Plan around Unfriendly or Hostile faction behavior, especially with War Mode active.
Common failure cases and fixes
“My friend cannot apply to my listing.”
Open the listing and check whether the leader restricted applicants to the same faction. Remove that restriction if you want a mixed group, then have the other player apply again.
“We are guildmates, but we cannot help each other outside.”
Guild membership does not change outdoor faction relations. Move into a supported instance for full cooperation, or complete faction-specific outdoor steps separately.
“The dungeon finder will not put us together.”
Verify the exact queue and patch. If the automated queue does not accept the party, create a premade listing and enter the dungeon as an assembled group.

“It worked in retail but not in Classic.”
That difference is expected under Blizzard’s documented rules. Classic Progression allows some arena and battleground queues but does not provide the Modern WoW cross-realm dungeon and raid party behavior.
Bottom line for Horde-and-Alliance groups
For Modern WoW, the dependable path is to form a premade group for a supported dungeon, raid or rated PvP activity, then enter the instance together. You will be treated as friendly teammates inside and can fight, trade eligible loot and earn shared achievements. Cross-faction guilds and some questing are also supported, but outdoor faction relations remain Unfriendly—or Hostile in War Mode. If a queue or mode behaves differently, trust the current in-game listing and queue requirements, because eligibility changes by activity, version and patch.
