Researchers at USF Health are developing an experimental gene therapy aimed at canine cognitive decline, but it is not a treatment available to dogs. The project is still preclinical for canine use: the team says it must produce larger quantities of the therapy and develop ways to measure its effects before moving toward veterinary studies. USF Health has not reported results showing that it works in dogs or a timeline for trials.
What the proposed gene therapy is designed to do
According to USF Health’s October 7, 2026 report, the experimental approach uses a modified virus that does not cause disease to carry genetic instructions into brain cells. The cells are intended to make a protective protein that reduces oxidative stress and shields cells from damage. Research associate Aurelie Joly compared the concept to “a mini factory inside the body that continuously produces a beneficial protein after a single treatment.”

The report does not identify the virus used as a vector or the protein the cells are meant to produce. It also provides no dose, delivery route, safety findings, or evidence of effectiveness in dogs. The proposed mechanism is the research team’s rationale, not a demonstrated benefit for canine patients.
How far along is the research?
The project is at a preclinical development stage with respect to dogs. USF Health says that moving toward canine studies will require larger quantities of the treatment and new ways to measure whether it is effective. The announcement describes work toward future veterinary studies, not an active clinical trial or an approved therapy. It gives no trial start date or product availability timeline.

The report says earlier animal studies showed promise but does not identify the animals, study design, outcomes, or a publication. That brief description cannot establish how well the approach works or whether it is safe for dogs.
Who is working on it and how it is funded
Joly is advancing the project through Blue Zone Therapeutics, which she co-founded with Kevin Nash, PhD, Christian Brechot, MD, PhD, and Marselina Levis-Rabi. USF Health says the work receives partial support from the National Science Foundation and the Florida High Tech Corridor’s Early-Stage Innovation Fund. The stated aim is to move the technology from laboratory research toward veterinary use and eventual commercialization; no launch or commercialization date is announced.

What this means for dog owners now
There is no gene therapy to seek out for a dog with memory or behavior changes based on this announcement. USF Health describes existing care as primarily addressing symptoms such as anxiety and behavioral changes rather than the underlying disease. That is a broad summary in a university news report, not a comprehensive review of veterinary care. If an older dog develops changes in behavior, sleep, orientation, vision, or hearing, discuss them with a veterinarian rather than treating this research as a diagnosis or care plan.
Why the announcement includes an older dog’s story
The report recounts Kate Heath’s experience with Ivy, her 12-year-old pug. Heath observed changes in vision and hearing, disrupted sleep, wandering into unusual parts of their apartment, and episodes in which Ivy appeared lost. Ivy died in February 2024. The account conveys one caregiver’s experience; it does not define diagnostic criteria or show how common those changes are.

Joly’s interest in studying dogs also reflects a research rationale: she said dogs develop cognitive problems spontaneously as they age, making them a useful model for human disease. That rationale does not prove that results in dogs will translate to people.

A 2020 peer-reviewed study examined plasma neurofilament light chain in healthy dogs and dogs diagnosed with canine cognitive dysfunction or degenerative myelopathy. It discusses dogs as models of naturally occurring neurodegeneration and describes the Canine Dementia Scale (CADES) as a way to classify cognitive status. That work provides background on canine aging and biomarkers; it did not test Joly’s gene therapy and is not evidence that the proposed treatment works.
