Yes, but not with the guarantees of a dedicated scheduler. Gemini Spark can run scheduled tasks in Google’s cloud while your phone or computer is turned off. However, Google says run times are approximate, heavy traffic can delay execution, usage and concurrency limits can prevent a run, and Spark can make mistakes. It is best for recurring, reviewable work—not time-critical, irreversible, or sensitive actions.
The short answer: background execution works, reliability is conditional
Gemini Spark is built to execute tasks and schedules in the background. For ordinary Spark cloud schedules, the task continues on Google’s servers even when the phone or computer is powered off. You do not need to leave the Gemini app open for a normal scheduled task to start.

That capability should not be confused with a guaranteed on-time job. Google’s scheduling documentation says run times are approximate and may not occur at the exact time or event condition you specify. A schedule can also be delayed by high activity in Gemini Apps, skipped when a compute-based usage limit has been reached, or blocked when 15 other tasks are already running. Google also warns that Gemini can make mistakes.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn practical terms, Spark is suitable for low-risk assistance such as preparing a recurring summary, organizing files, or drafting a message for review. It is a poor fit for a task where a missed minute, duplicate action, or incorrect decision could cause harm.

How Spark’s automation model works
Google describes Spark automation using three building blocks:
- Task: the goal you want Spark to accomplish, such as finding information, editing a document, or preparing a draft.
- Schedule: the time or event condition that tells Spark when to run the task.
- Skill: reusable instructions and context that can guide similar tasks repeatedly.
A schedule can be time-based or event-based. For example, you might ask Spark to perform a task every morning, or to respond when a specified condition occurs. These are natural-language instructions interpreted by an AI system, not necessarily deterministic scripts with a guaranteed sequence of operations.
That distinction matters. A conventional cron job normally follows fixed commands and reports a predictable exit status. Spark must interpret the task, decide how to perform it, and sometimes ask for confirmation. The result can therefore vary with the data it finds, the connected service, the wording of the instructions, and whether an action requires your approval.
Will Spark work if your phone or computer is off?
For ordinary cloud schedules, yes. Google says scheduled Spark tasks can continue when the device is turned off. The schedule is associated with your account and executed in the cloud rather than on the phone or computer where you created it.
There are two important exceptions to keep separate from cloud scheduling:
- Local Chrome automation: if a Spark web task uses the Chrome browser running on your own computer, that computer and browser must remain awake and running. Sleep, shutdown, a closed browser, or a lost network connection can stop the local portion.
- Remote-browser automation: a remote browser can continue after you close the device, but a sign-in step may pause the task until you take over and authenticate.
Consequently, “Spark schedules run while the device is off” does not mean every Spark browser workflow is device-independent. Check whether the task is a cloud action, a local-browser action, or a remote-browser action before assuming it will run unattended.

What can make a schedule late or prevent it from running?
Google identifies several specific failure conditions. They are more useful than treating reliability as a simple yes-or-no feature.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Run times are approximate
Google says a scheduled run may not happen at the exact moment you set, and an event-triggered run may not begin exactly when the event condition is met. A task set for a particular time should therefore be treated as a time window rather than a precise alarm.
High Gemini activity can cause delays
Heavy activity across Gemini Apps can delay schedules. A delay does not necessarily mean that your instructions were wrong; the service may simply have more work than usual at the requested time.
Compute-based usage limits can block a run
If a Gemini Apps compute-based usage limit has been reached when the schedule is due, Google says the schedule may not run. A later attempt is not guaranteed by the documentation, so do not assume every missed run will be automatically replayed.
Fifteen active tasks is the documented concurrency ceiling
Google says a schedule will not run when 15 tasks are already running. This is a concurrent maximum, not a daily task count. A burst of long-running tasks can therefore prevent a new schedule from starting even if you have created relatively few schedules overall.
The model can make mistakes
Google’s warning is explicit: “Gemini is still learning and can make mistakes.” An automation can misunderstand an instruction, select the wrong file, produce an incomplete result, or take an unintended action. A successful start or completion notification would not, by itself, prove that the output is correct.

What Spark can do with connected Google Workspace services
When you connect Google Workspace, Spark can work with services and data covered by Google’s documentation, including:
- Managing calendar information.
- Searching Gmail and drafting messages.
- Managing files in Drive.
- Editing documents.
- Creating or editing spreadsheets.
Workspace must be connected before Spark can use that data. Some changes to shared files require review and confirmation, which adds a human checkpoint but also means a fully unattended workflow may stop before the final edit.
Use the least powerful action that meets your goal. A draft is safer than an immediate send; a proposed file change is safer than overwriting a shared document. For recurring work, specify which account, folder, date range, file type, and output format Spark should use. Precise boundaries reduce the chance that an otherwise reasonable instruction is applied to the wrong data.

Time-based schedules use the time zone in effect where the schedule was created. If you travel, Google says the schedule continues at that original scheduled time rather than automatically switching to your current local time.
If you want the schedule to follow a new location, ask Spark to edit the schedule for the new time zone. Verify the resulting time before relying on it, especially when crossing the International Date Line or moving between regions that observe daylight-saving changes.

- Define the outcome. State what Spark should produce, not just a broad intention. For example, request a weekly list of calendar events and unresolved email threads rather than “keep me organized.”
- Choose a trigger. Specify a time or event condition and include the intended time zone.
- Limit the data scope. Name the Workspace account, Drive folder, labels, date range, or spreadsheet tab that Spark may use.
- Set an approval boundary. Tell Spark to draft, summarize, or propose changes instead of sending messages or modifying shared files automatically when the action is hard to reverse.
- Review the schedule details. Confirm the recurrence, trigger, time zone, connected services, and expected output before enabling it.
- Run a low-risk trial. Start with a non-destructive test, such as creating a private document or draft, and inspect the result manually.
- Keep the workload below the concurrency limit. Avoid launching more than 15 long-running tasks at once, because a new schedule may not start when all 15 task slots are occupied.
- Document a fallback. Decide what you will do if the schedule is late, skipped, or produces an unusable result. Do not make the Spark task the only path for a critical reminder or deadline.
How to troubleshoot a late or missed schedule
1. Check whether the timing was approximate
Allow for a delay rather than treating the scheduled time as an exact timestamp. Event-based schedules can also lag behind the event that triggered them.

Consider whether Gemini Apps may be experiencing high activity and whether 15 tasks are already running. Stop or wait for unnecessary long-running tasks before retrying.
3. Check usage limits
If a compute-based usage limit was reached, the scheduled task may not have started. Review your current Gemini access and usage status before assuming that the schedule itself is corrupted.
4. Check the execution type
A cloud task can run with the device off, but a local Chrome task requires an awake computer and browser. A remote browser may be waiting at a sign-in screen.
5. Check the time zone
Confirm the schedule’s original creation time zone, particularly after travel or a daylight-saving change.
6. Inspect the output, not just the run status
Because Spark can make mistakes, verify the actual document, draft, spreadsheet, or calendar change. If the action was sensitive or irreversible, do not rely on an apparent completion without reviewing the result.
Best Value
Google’s reviewed scheduling guidance does not establish a universal retry policy, guaranteed failure notification, uptime percentage, completion-rate measurement, or audit-log behavior. Do not assume those controls exist unless the interface explicitly shows them for your account.
Which background jobs are a good fit?
| Use case characteristic | How Spark fits |
|---|---|
| Recurring summaries, drafts, or organization | Reasonable when the output is reviewed before use |
| Tasks that can tolerate a delay | Suitable because run times are approximate |
| Actions affecting shared Workspace files | Use review and confirmation where required |
| Exact-time alerts or deadlines | Poor fit because traffic and limits can delay or skip a run |
| Irreversible or high-impact actions | Avoid unattended execution because Spark can make mistakes |
| Local browser workflows | Requires the computer and Chrome to stay awake and running |
| Remote browser workflows requiring authentication | May pause until you complete the sign-in step |
Access requirements and availability
Google’s current Spark help page says personal use requires all of the following:
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must sign in with a personal Google Account.
- You must have Google AI Pro or Ultra.
- Activity must remain enabled.
The same page lists the Gemini mobile app, the Gemini app on Mac, and the Gemini web app as supported surfaces. It also says personal availability excludes the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Google can change plan terms, supported regions, and product availability, so verify the current requirements for your account before designing a workflow around Spark.
How to judge Spark against a dedicated automation system
If you are deciding whether Spark is reliable enough for a job, compare the systems on these questions:
- Timing: Does the job require an exact timestamp, or is a delay acceptable?
- Failure handling: Can you see missed runs, and is retry behavior clearly exposed?
- Capacity: Could usage limits or the 15-task concurrency ceiling affect the workload?
- Device dependence: Is the work a cloud task, a local browser task, or a remote browser task?
- Human oversight: Can you review, confirm, undo, or interrupt the action?
- Trigger type: Is a time schedule sufficient, or do you need a deterministic event trigger?
Google’s public Spark documentation explains the known timing, capacity, device, and accuracy caveats but does not publish a service-level uptime promise or measured task-success rate. That absence is important: there is no official percentage that would justify calling Spark dependable for mission-critical automation.
Bottom line
Gemini Spark can run many automations in the background, including while your phone or computer is off, because ordinary schedules execute in the cloud. Its reliability is conditional rather than guaranteed: schedules are approximate, traffic and usage limits can interfere, 15 active tasks can block another run, browser workflows may depend on a live device or a completed sign-in, and the AI can make mistakes. Use Spark for recurring, low-risk work with a review step; use a deterministic scheduler or a supervised process when timing, completeness, or reversibility is essential.
