What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Free tools can cover core password-management, VPN, and antivirus needs, but they are not automatic one-for-one replacements for every paid plan. Bitwarden and Proton Pass offer free password-manager tiers; Proton VPN lists a free plan with one device; and Microsoft offers a free Defender PC security app. Whether switching saves you $300 a year depends on the subscriptions you actually cancel and any replacement costs.
What a free setup can—and cannot—replace
Treat these as three separate decisions. A password manager stores and syncs credentials; a VPN routes and encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN service; antivirus or endpoint protection helps defend devices against malicious software. One free app does not replace all three functions, and none makes the others unnecessary.

Free password managers: choose by the features you use
Bitwarden Free
Bitwarden’s pricing page lists its basic individual password management as always free, with unlimited passwords and devices. Its help documentation describes free individual accounts as including unlimited storage for logins, notes, cards, and identities, access on any device, and sync. That documentation says its plan details were current as of June 4, 2024, so use the current pricing page to reconfirm terms; see the plan documentation for its stated feature breakdown.

- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Proton Pass Free
Proton lists unlimited logins, notes, credit cards, and devices on its free tier, along with browser, mobile, and desktop apps, a password generator, passkey support, and ten hide-my-email aliases. See the Proton Pass plan page for the published features.
Check before moving your vault
Do not choose solely by the number of stored passwords. Confirm that the free plan fits the way you use the manager:
Rank #2
- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
- People and sharing: Check whether you need to share a vault with family or colleagues and whether that feature is included.
- Devices and browsers: Make sure the apps and browser extensions you rely on are supported, and that the device allowance is sufficient.
- Autofill and sync: Test the everyday workflow on your own devices rather than assuming every paid feature is included.
- Recovery and export: Understand how to regain access and export your passwords before migrating; keep a secure backup during the move.
- Premium-only features: Identify the specific paid features you use and verify whether losing them matters to you.
Plan pages establish listed features, not that one manager is categorically more secure than another.
Free VPNs: understand device and feature limits
Proton VPN advertises its free plan as having no ads, no data limit, and no artificial speed limit. Its free-plan listing specifies one device. The vendor says the service is available on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, and browser platforms; availability of the service across platforms does not remove the free plan’s device limit. Review the free-plan details and plan comparison before replacing a subscription.
Rank #3
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN service and changes the IP address websites see. It does not make all browsing anonymous, secure your accounts by itself, or replace endpoint protection and safe online habits. The cited plan pages are vendor claims; they do not establish performance, streaming access, or reliability under your conditions.
Match the plan to your VPN use
- Count how many devices need to connect at the same time.
- Check whether the free tier offers the server locations and features you need.
- Confirm supported operating systems and any data or speed limits that matter for your use.
- Do not assume a free VPN is a drop-in replacement if you depend on paid-plan features.
Free antivirus: check what Defender covers on your devices
Microsoft lists Microsoft Defender as a free PC security app in its U.S. Store category. Its separate Defender for Individuals page describes protection features across Windows, Android, iOS, and macOS, but some benefits depend on a Microsoft 365 subscription, functionality has limits or dependencies in some contexts, and availability varies by region. Those listings establish availability, not feature parity or comparative effectiveness against every paid antivirus suite. See the Microsoft Store free security apps listing and Microsoft Defender for Individuals for scope and conditions.
Rank #4
- FIDO-ONLY FUNCTIONALITY: Supports FIDO2 (passkeys) and FIDO U2F protocols for passwordless and second-factor authentication. Does not support OTP, TOTP, Smart Card (PIV), or other advanced features - upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series for extended functionality
- SECURE AND CONVENIENT: Passwordless MFA login with the YubiKey Bio authenticator and biometric information using a fingerprint, with a PIN as a fallback. Simply plug in via USB and use your fingerprint to authenticate
- DEVICE & OS COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Works seamlessly with supported services like Google and Microsoft accounts, and major password managers. See the full compatibility list at "Works With YubiKey"
- DURABLE & RELIABLE: Resistant to tampering, water, and crushing. No batteries or network connectivity required, offering dependable authentication without any downtime. Securely manufactured in USA & Sweden
- Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
Before canceling a security suite, check which devices it protects, whether its real-time protection and updates meet your needs, and whether a feature you rely on requires a subscription. Also check whether you already have protection through your operating system or another plan. Avoid running overlapping real-time antivirus products unless the vendors say that setup is supported.
How to verify whether you saved $300 a year
$300 is an individual savings claim, not an amount established for every reader by these product listings. Calculate your own result using the charges you actually avoid:
Annual net savings = annual cost of subscriptions actually canceled − annual cost of replacement tools.
- List the subscriptions you will cancel and the renewal price you would otherwise pay, in your local currency.
- Account for annual versus monthly billing, renewal discounts, taxes, and any partial-year refunds.
- If a canceled service was bundled with benefits you still need, count only the cost genuinely avoided. Count the full bundle price only if you cancel the whole bundle.
- Subtract any new costs for replacement tools. If every replacement is free for your use, that line may be zero.
- Compare the result with $300 only after totaling your own bills; do not treat that figure as a typical or guaranteed saving.
For context, Bitwarden’s pricing page currently lists Premium at $1.65 per month billed annually ($19.80 per year) and Families at $3.99 per month billed annually ($47.88 per year), in U.S. dollars before taxes. These are listed prices, not your personal savings, and should be checked on the pricing page before you make a decision.
Quick Recap
A practical switch checklist
- Write down what each paid product currently does for you, including shared access, device count, VPN locations, and antivirus features.
- Match each need against the relevant free plan’s published limits and regional availability.
- Set up and verify the replacement before canceling the existing service. For a password manager, confirm access and export options; for antivirus, avoid leaving a device without protection during the change.
- Check renewal dates, refunds, and bundled benefits, then calculate annual net savings from the bills you actually avoid.
- Review the free plans’ terms again before switching, since listings can change.
