Yes—but the date matters. OpenAI announced on August 8, 2024 that Free users were being given access to up to two DALL·E 3 images per day. In the current ChatGPT experience (August 18, 2026), Free users can still generate images, but the default system is newer native ChatGPT image generation rather than automatically being DALL·E 3. DALL·E 3 may still be available through a dedicated DALL·E GPT, while its API has been scheduled for retirement.
What OpenAI actually announced in August 2024
The original headline was genuine. On August 8, 2024, OpenAI said it was rolling out the ability for Free users to create up to two images per day with DALL·E 3 (OpenAI announcement). OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ described the same feature as a gradual release (Free Tier FAQ).

“Rolling out” did not mean every account received it at once. Availability could differ by account, platform, geography and system capacity. The two-image figure was the launch allowance for that Free-tier DALL·E 3 rollout, not a permanent promise covering every future ChatGPT image system.

Native ChatGPT image generation became the main experience
On March 25, 2025, OpenAI introduced native 4o image generation and said it would become ChatGPT’s default image generator for Free and several paid plans (OpenAI’s 4o image-generation announcement). This system is integrated into the multimodal ChatGPT model, rather than being the older DALL·E diffusion-model route. OpenAI’s technical system card explains the distinction (native image-generation system card).
#1 Best Overall
DALL·E remains a separate legacy route where available
OpenAI’s current Images help page says Free, Plus, Business and Pro users can generate images with DALL·E through the dedicated DALL·E GPT (Images in ChatGPT). That does not mean the main ChatGPT conversation is using DALL·E 3 by default, nor that every account will continue to see the dedicated GPT indefinitely.
The API is a different product
OpenAI’s developer notice scheduled DALL·E 2 and DALL·E 3 API shutdown for May 12, 2026 and directed developers toward GPT Image models (developer-forum notice). API retirement does not, by itself, establish the exact availability of the DALL·E GPT in the consumer ChatGPT interface. Treat ChatGPT access, the dedicated GPT and API endpoints as separate questions.
Can Free users generate images in ChatGPT now?
Yes. OpenAI’s current pricing page lists image generation as a limited Free-plan capability (ChatGPT pricing). The current answer is therefore:

Rank #2
- Image generation: available to Free users, subject to limits and availability.
- Default model: newer native ChatGPT image generation, not automatically DALL·E 3.
- Legacy DALL·E 3: potentially available through the DALL·E GPT if that route appears on the account.
- Paid subscription: not required for basic image creation.
How to create an image on the Free plan
- Sign in to ChatGPT on the web or in the mobile app.
- Start a new conversation.
- Ask directly for an image, for example:
Create a simple illustrated travel poster for Chicago in autumn, with readable text and a warm vintage color palette. - Wait for the generated result, then open it to view or download it.
- If you specifically need the legacy DALL·E route, open the GPT selector or GPT directory and choose DALL·E, if it is listed for your account.
Interface labels change, so you may not see a permanent “image” button or identical model selector. A direct request to create an image is the most reliable first step.
How Free-tier limits work
Do not treat “two images per day” as a guaranteed 2026 quota. It describes OpenAI’s 2024 DALL·E 3 rollout. Current limits can vary with the plan, account rollout, model route and system conditions. OpenAI’s Free Tier documentation warns that usage limits may change with demand and capacity (current Free Tier FAQ).
When a limit is reached, ChatGPT may tell you that image creation is temporarily unavailable or that you have reached a usage limit. The practical choices are:
Rank #3
- Wait until the account’s limit resets; use the reset time shown in ChatGPT if one is provided.
- Try again later if the restriction is capacity-related.
- Continue with text-based ChatGPT tasks while waiting.
- Upgrade if higher limits are worth the cost for your workload.
There is no single reset time that can safely be promised to every Free user.
DALL·E 3 versus current native ChatGPT image generation
| Area | DALL·E 3 | Native ChatGPT image generation |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Legacy image-generation model | Current integrated ChatGPT image system |
| Typical access | Dedicated DALL·E GPT, where available | Main ChatGPT conversation |
| Relevant launch | ChatGPT integration announced in 2023; Free access rolled out in August 2024 | Native 4o image generation introduced March 25, 2025 |
| Prompt workflow | ChatGPT can turn conversational instructions into DALL·E prompts | Image generation is embedded directly in the multimodal ChatGPT system |
| Current status | Legacy route subject to availability and retirement changes | OpenAI’s current product direction |
Troubleshooting common problems
“I do not see an image button”
Ask in the chat: Generate an image, not a description: [your prompt]. If you want DALL·E specifically, check the GPT directory for the DALL·E GPT. Controls vary between accounts and app versions.
“ChatGPT returned text instead of an image”
Make the request unambiguous: Generate an image, not a written description. If that still fails, select the image-generation feature or the DALL·E GPT when available.
Rank #4
“I reached the limit after only a few images”
The old two-per-day statement was not a universal permanent quota for all later systems. Account-specific limits, temporary capacity controls and model routing can produce a different result. Wait for the displayed reset or try again later.
“The result looks unlike older DALL·E 3 images”
The default image system changed after native 4o image generation launched. Different model behavior and prompt interpretation can therefore produce noticeably different images (OpenAI’s announcement).

“The DALL·E GPT disappeared”
That may reflect a product transition, account availability or retirement of a legacy route. OpenAI still documents DALL·E GPT access, but does not guarantee that every account will display it permanently (OpenAI help documentation).
Best Value
“Can I use the API instead?”
Do not build a new integration around the dall-e-3 API endpoint without checking current developer documentation. OpenAI’s notice scheduled that API model for shutdown on May 12, 2026 and recommends supported GPT Image models instead (developer notice).
Is ChatGPT Plus necessary?
No. Free users can generate images, so Plus is not a prerequisite for occasional illustrations, concepts, avatars or thumbnails. A paid plan may be worthwhile when you repeatedly hit Free limits, need higher overall ChatGPT usage or want additional paid features. OpenAI’s plan limits and included capabilities can change, so check the current pricing page before subscribing (ChatGPT pricing).
If you only need a specialist image workflow, alternatives may fit better: Midjourney (midjourney.com) emphasizes stylized imagery; Adobe Firefly (Adobe Firefly) suits Adobe-centered design work; Canva’s generator (Canva AI image generator) combines images with templates; and Gemini (Gemini) may appeal to users already invested in Google’s ecosystem. Verify each service’s current pricing, limits and regional availability.
Commercial use and rights: do not assume a blanket answer
Generating an image does not automatically settle every commercial-rights question. Before using an image in paid work, consider:
- It may resemble a protected character, logo, brand or living artist’s style.
- You may not receive exclusive rights simply because you generated it.
- A real person’s likeness can raise publicity, privacy or consent issues.
- Copyright protection may differ from that for human-authored work and depends on applicable law.
- OpenAI’s current Terms of Use and local law should be reviewed for the specific project.
OpenAI’s original DALL·E 3 announcement discussed safety and provenance measures, but it is not a complete statement of current commercial rights (DALL·E 3 announcement).
What the headline should say in 2026
“Free ChatGPT users can now generate images with DALL·E 3” is accurate as a description of the August 2024 rollout, but misleading as fresh August 2026 news. The precise current framing is that Free users can generate images in ChatGPT, while the default experience uses newer image-generation technology and DALL·E 3 is a legacy option whose availability must be checked.
