No—not a complete, transplantable heart or kidney. Fraunhofer’s PhysioINK project is developing bio-inks to print physiological tissue structures. Its current plans include cardiac tissue research and intestinal tumor models for drug development; the project sources do not report a printed kidney, a complete organ, or a transplant.
Can you 3D-print a heart or a kidney?
Heart: tissue research, not a finished organ
Fraunhofer describes physiological cardiac tissue as a research application and a possible step toward functional implants for personalized regenerative medicine. That is a longer-term goal, not evidence that a working heart or implant has been produced. The project’s October 1, 2026 report does not announce a transplantable heart or a clinical trial.

Kidney: not a named PhysioINK application
The current PhysioINK descriptions do not name kidney tissue as an application. They also do not report printing a kidney. The title’s heart-or-kidney question therefore has a different answer for each organ: cardiac tissue is an intended research direction; a printed kidney is not reported by these sources.

What is Fraunhofer developing?
PhysioINK is a Fraunhofer research project running from February 2025 through January 2028 and funded internally by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, according to the project page from Fraunhofer IZI-BB. Its consortium includes Fraunhofer ISC, IAP, IMWS and IZI-BB.

The project is developing concentrated bio-inks made with type I collagen, type IV collagen and elastin—structural proteins found in the body. PhysioINK coordinator Tobias Weigel of Fraunhofer ISC describes the approach this way: “Until now, printing inks have been made from fully synthetic or heavily chemically modified materials. In contrast, we are using physiological materials—the same materials that organs are made of.” The materials are intended to help reproduce tissue-like structures; that does not mean the ink itself is an organ or that it is ready for transplantation.
How does the bio-ink work?
- Keep the proteins printable. Tailored cellulose sulfates temporarily stabilize the collagen and elastin so they remain dissolved and can be processed as ink.
- Trigger structure formation. A temperature change then allows the proteins to reorganize into fibrous or network-like structures resembling physiological tissue.
- Assess performance and cell compatibility. The project aims to make the ink work across different printing processes. Fraunhofer IZI-BB says its work includes interaction analyses, cell-compatibility studies and monitoring nutrient supply with optical microsensors.
Fraunhofer says it has filed a patent application for the key principle. Its October 2026 announcement does not provide an application number or say that a patent has been granted.

Why is printing tissue difficult?
The central challenge is balancing two properties. Some inks are easy to print but do not reproduce natural tissue structure well; other materials can mimic tissue more closely but are difficult to print reliably. PhysioINK aims to improve both printability and physiological fidelity, while making the materials usable with different printing processes.

What is the research meant to produce?
Standardized intestinal tumor models
Fraunhofer names standardized colorectal cancer models as an intended use for drug development. Models made more consistently could serve research into how treatments affect tumor tissue, but the project announcement does not claim that these models are already in routine use or have produced a particular drug result.
Physiological cardiac tissue
The other named application is cardiac tissue, with functional implants presented as a future direction. Tissue research and an implantable, functioning heart are very different milestones; the current reports describe the former as a research application, not the latter as an achieved outcome.

How is this different from Fraunhofer’s earlier bio-ink work?
Fraunhofer IGB’s 2019 report covered separate work with the University of Stuttgart. Its formulations used biopolymers such as gelatin or hyaluronic acid in an aqueous medium with living cells, then used ultraviolet crosslinking to form hydrogels. That report also discussed bone, cartilage matrices and vascularization inks. Those materials and methods should not be confused with PhysioINK’s collagen-and-elastin approach stabilized by cellulose sulfates.
| Work | Materials and method described | Applications or focus reported |
|---|---|---|
| PhysioINK, current project | Type I and type IV collagen plus elastin; cellulose sulfates temporarily stabilize the proteins, followed by temperature-triggered reorganization. | Standardized intestinal tumor models for drug development and physiological cardiac tissue research. |
| Fraunhofer IGB and University of Stuttgart, 2019 | Gelatin or hyaluronic acid, aqueous medium and living cells; ultraviolet crosslinking into hydrogels. | Earlier work on bone and vascularization inks and research into cartilage matrices. |
Why is Fraunhofer working on bio-inks?
Fraunhofer’s October 1, 2026 report says 8,000 people in Germany are on the organ-transplant waiting list each year and that about 10% never receive an organ. The report does not identify the underlying statistical dataset, so these figures should be understood as figures cited by Fraunhofer rather than independently verified counts here. The unmet need helps explain interest in regenerative medicine, but it does not establish that bioprinted organs are available to address it.
