Short answer: a Firefox update can break the effect of an interface customization, especially rules in userChrome.css that target Firefox’s internal elements. Mozilla’s guidance describes compatibility breakage and possible interface problems; it does not say that routine updates normally delete your CSS files. Treat an update as a possible change to the selectors your rules depend on, not as an automatic file-erasure process.
What a Firefox update can—and cannot—remove
Firefox supports several ways to change its appearance and controls. Toolbar customization, settings, themes and extensions use supported browser features intended for ordinary users. Advanced users can also alter hidden preferences or load their own CSS files, but those methods depend on implementation details that Mozilla may change.

The important distinction is between a customization file and the behavior produced by that file:
- The file may remain in your profile. The official guidance does not state that normal Firefox updates routinely erase
userChrome.cssoruserContent.css. - The rules may stop matching. A redesign can rename, move or replace the interface elements and attributes that a selector targets.
- The result can range from harmless to severe. A rule might simply do nothing, or it might produce misplaced, unreadable or otherwise broken controls.
Mozilla’s current advanced-customization article says, “Firefox is a work in progress and, to allow for continuous innovation, Mozilla cannot guarantee that future updates won’t impact these customizations.” The page was last updated September 12, 2026. That wording supports a compatibility warning, not a claim that every update removes customization. If your interface changed after updating, first test whether the rules are still being loaded and whether their selectors still match. Do not assume that the update deleted the file.
Which customization methods are most vulnerable?
| Method | What it changes | Update risk and support |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in toolbar controls | Toolbar buttons, their arrangement and available controls through Firefox’s own customization interface. | Uses supported browser UI and is generally less exposed to internal markup changes. |
| Settings and preferences | Behavior and appearance options exposed in Firefox Settings or, for advanced users, the Configuration Editor. | Ordinary settings are supported. Mozilla warns that advanced about:config changes can cause unexpected behavior and are not officially supported. |
| Themes | Colors, backgrounds and other appearance choices supplied through Firefox’s theme system. | Relies on a Firefox-managed feature rather than your own selectors, although a theme can still look different when the browser redesigns its UI. |
| Extensions | Features or interface additions provided by an installed add-on. | Depends on the extension being maintained for the Firefox versions you use. An update can expose an extension incompatibility without deleting unrelated CSS files. |
userChrome.css |
Direct styling of Firefox’s own interface: colors, sizes, visibility and placement of internal elements. | Most fragile. Mozilla says future updates may affect custom rules and describes this approach as advanced and unsupported for general users. |
userContent.css |
Custom styling for web content displayed in Firefox. | Also an advanced, unsupported customization and can be affected when Firefox changes the contexts or elements the rules target. |
Mozilla’s contributors guide on advanced customization with CSS says CSS customization is intended for developers and warns that users should expect some custom rules to stop working correctly in the future. It also notes that extreme failures can cause serious user-interface issues.
How userChrome.css works
Firefox’s interface is built with web-like HTML and XUL elements and styled with CSS. A userChrome.css file is loaded from the profile’s chrome folder and applies your selectors and declarations to that interface. A selector might hide a toolbar item, change a panel’s dimensions, move a control or alter a color.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirefox does not load these files unless the preference toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets is enabled. Mozilla’s contributor documentation says this preference defaults to false. That default means a newly created profile normally ignores a userChrome.css file until you deliberately enable the preference.
An update can affect any part of this chain. Firefox may change an element’s tag, ID, class, hierarchy, state attributes or built-in style rules. A selector that once matched one button may then match nothing, match a different element or lose a necessary precedence relationship. The file is still present, but its visible effect changes.

Because CSS is declarative, there is no built-in error report for every obsolete selector. A partially working file can therefore be confusing: one rule may continue to work while another silently stops applying. A severe conflict can also make menus or panels difficult to use. This is why Mozilla recommends advanced customization only for people prepared to maintain it as Firefox evolves.
Why an update can make the interface look broken
Selectors no longer match
The simplest failure is a selector that targets an element Firefox no longer creates or names in the same way. The declaration is ignored, so a hidden item reappears or a color reverts to the browser default.
Selectors match the wrong element
When markup is reorganized, a broad selector can begin styling a neighboring control, a container or a new component. The result may look like a random layout defect even though the browser is following the rule it was given.
Built-in styles take precedence
A redesign can introduce more specific rules, new state styles or different cascade ordering. Your declaration may still match but lose to Firefox’s newer style, leaving only part of the customization visible.
Several rules interact
Custom files often contain overrides that assume a particular panel size or element position. If one assumption changes, another rule can create overflow, clipped text or controls that overlap. Mozilla does not publish a failure rate for these problems, so no percentage can responsibly be attached to the risk.

Diagnose an interface change before deleting anything
Use a reversible test first. The goal is to determine whether custom CSS is involved, not to prove that an update erased a file.
- Note what changed. Record the Firefox version and the exact symptom: a missing button, unreadable text, a panel that will not open or a layout change. A screenshot can help you compare later.
- Check whether advanced CSS exists. If you have used
userChrome.cssoruserContent.css, remember that the files live in the profile’schromefolder. Their presence is evidence that a customization may still be loading; it is not evidence that an update removed them. - Start Firefox Troubleshoot Mode. Mozilla says this mode can temporarily disable custom rules. If the problem disappears there and returns during a normal start, customizations are a strong suspect. Troubleshoot Mode is a diagnostic session, not a permanent reset.
- Test one change at a time. Do not simultaneously remove extensions, reset preferences and edit CSS. Isolating variables makes it possible to identify the rule or feature that causes the failure.
- Keep a copy of the current file. Before editing, duplicate the CSS file outside the profile or rename the copy with the Firefox version and date. This is practical protection; Mozilla’s guidance establishes the compatibility risk but does not prescribe a particular backup schedule.
If Troubleshoot Mode does not change the symptom, investigate ordinary settings, themes, extensions or a Firefox bug rather than assuming the CSS is responsible. If the symptom changes only when custom rules are disabled, proceed with a selective reset.
Disable or remove the CSS selectively
When you want to stop advanced CSS without wiping all Firefox customizations, use the narrowest intervention:
- Enter
about:configin the address bar and acknowledge the warning shown by Firefox. - Search for
toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets. - Reset that preference to
false. With it disabled, Firefox will not load the profile’s legacy custom style sheets. - Locate the profile’s
chromefolder and remove or rename the relevantuserChrome.cssoruserContent.cssfile. Renaming is safer when you may need to restore the rules. - Restart Firefox and check the same interface areas you recorded during diagnosis.
Mozilla’s documentation describes both resetting the preference and removing or renaming the CSS file as ways to disable advanced customization. If you later restore the file, remember that the preference must be enabled again before Firefox can load it.
Do not edit unrelated preferences while performing this test. A selective CSS reset preserves your bookmarks, history, extensions and ordinary settings, making it materially different from a full profile refresh.

When Refresh Firefox is appropriate—and when it is excessive
Refresh Firefox is a broad recovery operation, not a synonym for turning off one CSS file. Mozilla warns that Refresh removes add-ons and other customizations, including extension data and preference configurations. Accessibility customizations may also need to be restored afterward.
Consider Refresh only when you want to return a wider set of Firefox components to defaults or when narrower troubleshooting has failed. Before using it, export or record anything you need to recreate: extension settings, specialized preferences, accessibility adjustments and your CSS files. If the only problem is a broken userChrome.css rule, disabling the preference or renaming the file is the lower-impact choice.
Choose a customization path that matches your tolerance for maintenance
Use built-in controls for routine changes
If you only need to rearrange toolbar buttons, change a normal setting or select a different appearance, use Firefox’s built-in customization screen, Settings and theme controls. These options are designed to track Firefox’s supported interface and avoid selectors tied to internal markup.
Use an extension when the feature is genuinely add-on functionality
An extension can be a better boundary for a feature than a collection of undocumented preferences. Check that the extension is maintained for your Firefox release and keep its configuration documented. An extension remains a separate compatibility dependency, but its update path is clearer than an unmaintained selector.

Use CSS only when you can maintain it
Custom CSS is appropriate for developers or technically confident users who need changes unavailable through supported controls. Keep comments explaining what each selector targets, retain a known-good copy and expect to revise rules after Firefox interface changes. Avoid broad selectors when a narrowly scoped rule can accomplish the same result.
Best Value
Use advanced preferences sparingly
Mozilla places Configuration Editor changes and custom CSS in the advanced category and warns that they can cause unexpected behavior or even break Firefox. Change one preference at a time, write down its original value and know how to reset it before experimenting.
A practical recovery decision tree
- The interface changed, but you never used custom CSS: check toolbar settings, themes, extensions and the release notes for the Firefox version. Do not create a
userChrome.cssfile merely to reverse a normal redesign. - You use custom CSS and Troubleshoot Mode fixes the issue: reset
toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheetstofalse, then rename the suspected file and restart. Reintroduce rules in small groups to find the obsolete selector. - The file is present but nothing changes: verify that the preference is enabled and that the file is in the profile’s
chromefolder. If both are correct, assume the selectors may no longer match the current interface. - The browser remains unusable after CSS is disabled: investigate extensions and preferences separately. Use Refresh Firefox only after accounting for its removal of add-ons, extension data and preference configurations.
- You need a stable long-term appearance: replace internal CSS overrides with built-in toolbar controls, settings, themes or a maintained extension wherever those options meet the requirement.
What Mozilla’s warnings mean in practice
Mozilla’s contributor guide, last updated April 1, 2025, states: “Users should expect that some of their custom rules will stop working correctly in the future, and in extreme cases, this may cause serious issues with the user interface.” This is a warning about ongoing maintenance, not a promise that every update will cause a failure.
The same guidance does not provide a numeric failure rate, and Mozilla’s advanced-customization article does not claim that updates routinely erase customization files. The defensible expectation is narrower: Firefox can change the internal structure and styling that advanced rules depend on, so their visible effect is not guaranteed across versions.
