Can Fingerprints Detect Your Blood Group? What the Evidence Shows

No—not reliably from fingerprint ridge patterns. Some studies report population-level links between fingerprint patterns and ABO blood groups, but those findings do not show that a person’s blood type can be accurately predicted from their print. A separate laboratory technique has tried to detect blood-group substances in fingerprint residue; it is not pattern-reading and has limited results. Neither approach is established here as a consumer-ready substitute for clinical blood typing.

Can fingerprints tell your blood type?

Not in a way you should rely on for an individual. A statistical association means that pattern frequencies differed between blood-group categories in a particular study population. It does not show that a fingerprint can identify a specific person’s blood group with dependable accuracy.

Results are also population-specific: a finding in one region cannot automatically be applied to people elsewhere. ABO and Rh are separate blood-group systems, so an association reported for ABO does not establish a relationship with Rh.

What population studies have found

Assam study, published in 2026

Bhan and colleagues studied 1,040 volunteers aged 18–28 in Assam. They determined participants’ ABO groups using monoclonal kits and collected fingerprints with an ink pad and roller before analyzing the patterns. The study reported an association between fingerprint patterns and blood groups (p = 0.030). The authors cautioned that “the results should not be interpreted as deterministic or predictive at the individual level.” Read the study in Scientific Reports.

Eastern India study, published in 2023

A cross-sectional study of 800 healthcare students and workers reported a difference in fingerprint-pattern distributions across ABO groups (p = 0.0003), but did not find a statistically significant difference across Rh groups (p = 0.08). Its abstract notes that earlier studies had not produced consistent results. This, too, is evidence of a population association—not proof of a reliable individual test. See the study record on PubMed.

Pattern prediction and residue testing are different methods

Approach What it examines What the available evidence establishes
Pattern association or machine learning Ridge patterns or fingerprint images, classified against blood-group labels. Some studies report population-level associations. The available studies do not establish a dependable consumer test for an individual’s blood group.
Chemical or immunohistochemical residue typing Blood-group substances deposited in fingerprint residue, rather than ridge shape. A specialized laboratory method was investigated, with results affected by the print’s secretor status, substrate, and processing.

What residue typing showed

A 1993 study investigated immunohistochemical detection of ABH substances in fingerprints transferred to nitrocellulose or paper. Fixation and paper quality affected detection; serial testing worked better on nitrocellulose than on paper. In a double-blind test on paper, the method specifically typed 22 of 35 fingerprints (62.9%). The authors described its potential use for fingerprints from secretors. These findings concern a laboratory procedure, not a method for reading blood type from fingerprint patterns or a consumer-ready test. See the study record on PubMed.

  • Long (3.9 ft./1.2m) USB Cable provides the flexibility to be placed virtually anywhere on or near the desktop.
  • Can be used to support cybersecurity measures consistent with (but not limited to) such privacy laws and regulations as GDPR, BIPA, and CCPA. Ready for use in U.S. Federal Government institutions and organizations.

A separate 1987 article described monoclonal-antibody testing for blood-group antigens in forensic materials, including fingerprints. Its abstract reports blind-study performance on more than 700 blood samples; that count refers to blood samples, not fingerprints. Read the article on ScienceDirect.

Can AI predict blood type from a fingerprint?

A 2026 Procedia Computer Science abstract reports around 91% accuracy across datasets for models applied to fingerprint data. That is a paper-reported model result, not established clinical accuracy. The accessible abstract does not provide enough information to assess independent test sets, external validation, class balance, or performance in clinical use. It therefore cannot show that an AI tool can reliably determine an individual’s blood group. Read the abstract on ScienceDirect.

What to use if you need your blood group

Use a recognized blood-typing service or clinical laboratory for medical decisions. An ink fingerprint pad or collection kit only collects prints; it does not identify blood group. The ink pad and roller used in the Assam study were for collecting fingerprints before pattern analysis, not for blood typing.
