FFmpeg can loop a bhajan recording indefinitely and send it to YouTube Live. For a file input, use -stream_loop -1 to repeat it and -re to read it at its normal rate. You still need to configure the audio and any video, use the stream destination and key from YouTube Live Control Room, and test the feed: looping a file does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A bhajan audio or video file that FFmpeg can read.
- A decision about what viewers will see: the recording’s video, a still image with audio, or another visual. The correct stream mapping and encoding settings depend on this choice and on the source file.
- FFmpeg installed with the required input and output support. Check the installed build and test the intended output protocol; support can vary.
- A YouTube channel able to start a live stream, plus the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room.
- Reliable upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and advises testing before the broadcast.
- Permission to broadcast the specific music and visuals, including the rights needed for a live stream and any resulting archive.
There is no single command guaranteed to fit every file, FFmpeg build, or YouTube channel. Inspect your media streams and adapt the mapping, codec, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate to your source and YouTube’s current settings.
Loop a recording with FFmpeg
1. Inspect the source and choose the output
Determine whether your file contains audio, video, or both, and which streams you intend to send. If the bhajan is audio-only, decide what visual you will pair with it; if it already includes video, decide whether to keep its existing format or encode it to settings suitable for the broadcast. FFmpeg’s stream selection and encoding choices must match that decision.
2. Add loop and real-time input options
Place -stream_loop -1 and -re before the relevant input’s -i option. The loop option repeats a finite input indefinitely; -re paces reading at the file’s native rate rather than sending it as fast as the machine can process it. FFmpeg documents -re as equivalent to -readrate 1 and notes that real-time reading is useful when packet flow speed matters, such as live streaming (FFmpeg documentation).

3. Set output encoders and destination
Use an output format and codecs compatible with your chosen YouTube ingest settings and your FFmpeg build. This illustrative command shows the general shape for a video file with audio; it is not a tested or universal command. Replace the destination placeholder with the exact URL and key details displayed for your stream, and adapt mapping, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and protocol as needed.

In particular, YouTube recommends RTMPS; whether your FFmpeg build can send to the required RTMPS destination depends on its protocol support and the URL supplied in Live Control Room.

4. Start with a test and watch stream health
Run a test with representative audio and visuals before the intended broadcast. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages, listen for clean audio, confirm that the visual is correct, and verify that the file reaches its end and loops as expected. YouTube recommends testing before going live and advises upload capacity above the stream’s total bitrate; its streaming tips recommend a 20% margin (YouTube streaming tips).
Match YouTube’s current ingest settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says it should not exceed four seconds. Choose video bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate instead of applying one bitrate to every stream. YouTube automatically transcodes incoming live streams for playback formats. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current recommendations.

These are ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular combination will work with every source or FFmpeg build. Confirm the actual settings and protocol shown or supported for your stream, then validate them with a test.
Get and protect your YouTube stream key
Use YouTube Live Control Room to obtain the stream URL and key for the broadcast, then enter the destination in your FFmpeg output configuration. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, share it, or leave it in public logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube explains how to connect an encoder in its live-streaming setup guide.

Rights matter as much as the loop
FFmpeg can repeat a file; that does not establish that you may broadcast its contents. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content on Google services, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants (YouTube Terms of Service). Confirm the rights for the specific bhajan recording, arrangement, performers, and any visuals, as well as the territories and uses covered. The rights status cannot be determined without identifying the recording and its licenses.

To stop the live broadcast, stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for a stream that runs longer (YouTube’s encoder live-stream guide). A process that loops forever is not itself a guarantee of continuous service: a source read error, encoding overload, network interruption, or YouTube-side issue can interrupt or degrade the feed.

Troubleshoot common problems
