FRBs are millisecond-long radio pulses from distant galaxies. They can be extraordinarily energetic at their source, but that description does not establish a communications hazard here. The documented causes of radio unreliability involve conditions in Earth’s ionosphere or, in one well-studied case, high-energy X-rays and gamma rays from a gamma-ray burst—not an incoming FRB radio pulse.
The short answer: FRBs are not a known communications threat
Fast radio bursts are brief flashes of radio energy that arrive from extragalactic space. Astronomers detect them with radio telescopes because the pulses last only milliseconds and are dispersed and altered as they cross interstellar and intergalactic plasma. Nothing in the documented observations establishes that an FRB has interrupted a mobile network, television service, aircraft link, ship-to-shore channel, satellite connection, GPS receiver or household radio.

That conclusion is deliberately evidence-bounded. It means the available observations and explanations do not show FRBs causing routine communications interference; it is not a claim that every conceivable physical effect has been ruled out under every possible future scenario. The key distinction is between what happens at an FRB’s distant source, what happens to a pulse while it travels, and what happens in Earth’s atmosphere when local propagation conditions change.
What a fast radio burst is
Millisecond pulses from outside the Milky Way
James M. Cordes and Shami Chatterjee describe FRBs as “millisecond-duration pulses that originate from as-yet unidentified extragalactic sources.” Their 2019 review presents FRBs as an established extragalactic phenomenon. The sources are far beyond Earth, and the bursts are observed as short radio transients rather than as continuous transmissions aimed at receivers on the ground.

The same review estimated a rate of “thousands per day over the entire sky.” That is a population-rate estimate published in 2019, not a current event count or a forecast of how many bursts will be above the horizon at a particular location. Individual bursts are also described as having radiation energy densities about ten billion times larger than those from Galactic pulsars. This is a comparison at the emitting source. It does not tell you the electric-field strength at your antenna, the power delivered to a phone, or the probability of a service outage.
Why astronomers can detect them
Radio telescopes use sensitive, wide-band receivers and signal-processing techniques to identify a pulse against noise. As an FRB crosses plasma, lower radio frequencies generally arrive later than higher frequencies, a signature called dispersion. Intervening material can also scatter or otherwise reshape the pulse. These propagation effects are part of how astronomers study the space between the source and Earth; they are not evidence that the burst is changing the operating conditions of terrestrial communication networks.
NASA’s Radio JOVE project explains that Earth’s ionosphere can reflect a radio signal back toward the surface or let it pass through, depending partly on frequency. Radio emissions made by people can make faint extraterrestrial signals harder for observers to detect. That is an observation problem for radio astronomy, not proof that an incoming FRB overwhelms everyday communications.
Source energy is not the same as a hazard at Earth
“Powerful” is easy to misinterpret in astronomy. A burst can release an enormous amount of energy in a compact region and still arrive at Earth as a signal that specialized instruments barely detect. Distance spreads the wave over a vast area, and the Earth intercepts only a tiny fraction of the original emission. The relevant question for communications is not how energetic the event was at its source, but whether measurements show that the arriving pulse changes a receiver, a propagation path or an atmospheric layer used by terrestrial links.
The cited FRB literature discusses source properties and plasma effects along the line of sight. It does not report an FRB-induced outage, a harmful exposure level for people, or a demonstrated mechanism by which a millisecond celestial radio pulse would disable communications infrastructure. No current Earth-level FRB exposure statistic is established by the cited sources, so a precise “risk per year” number would be unjustified.

How radio interference actually occurs in Earth’s ionosphere
Plasma can reflect or redirect signals
The ionosphere is a region of ionized gas high above the ground. Its electron density changes with sunlight, weather in the upper atmosphere, geomagnetic activity and other conditions. When the density and structure are right for a particular frequency, a radio wave can be refracted or reflected instead of following its usual path.
NASA describes plasma layers that can form suddenly and last for several hours. Glyn Collinson of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center compared them with “giant mirrors in the sky”: signals from distant stations can bounce over the horizon into local transmissions, like two people trying to talk over one another. The resulting co-channel interference is a change in the signal path created by Earth’s atmosphere. It is not an FRB arriving from deep space and overpowering a terrestrial transmitter.

NASA’s account of sporadic-E layers, published in September 2026, places the beginning of these structures around 40 miles (60 kilometers) altitude, with the layers typically around 60 miles (100 kilometers) up. They can reflect radio waves and temporarily make long-distance radio technology unreliable. The same discussion addresses uncertainty in GPS signals caused by ionospheric plasma.
Those altitudes and effects describe terrestrial atmospheric structures. They are not the distance to an FRB, and they do not indicate that FRB radio pulses create sporadic-E layers. When an aircraft, ship or long-distance radio user experiences this kind of problem, the mechanism is a changing ionosphere that alters propagation, not an astronomical burst striking the communications system.
Three phenomena that should not be conflated
| Phenomenon | Where the important effect occurs | Documented mechanism | Evidence for communications consequences |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast radio burst | At a distant extragalactic source and along the interstellar/intergalactic path | A millisecond radio pulse is detected and modified by intervening plasma | No documented FRB-caused interference to ordinary Earth communications in the cited sources |
| Terrestrial ionospheric layer | In Earth’s upper atmosphere, roughly tens of miles above the surface | Plasma reflects or refracts radio waves, changing propagation paths | Can produce interference or temporary unreliability in radio links, including aviation and shipping communications |
| Gamma-ray burst | High-energy radiation interacting with Earth’s upper atmosphere | X-rays and/or gamma rays ionize the atmosphere and modify radio propagation | A documented disturbance occurred during GRB 221009A; it was not an FRB radio detection |
Keeping the source type, location of the effect and mechanism separate prevents a common error: treating every space-related radio or electromagnetic event as the same kind of communications threat.

What the GRB 221009A event actually showed
A NASA Gamma-ray Coordinates Network circular dated October 13, 2022, reported a sudden ionospheric disturbance detected at two monitoring sites at the time of GRB 221009A. The measured change involved the strengths of transmissions below 100 kHz. The observers attributed it to prompt X-rays and/or gamma rays from the gamma-ray burst ionizing the upper atmosphere and changing the propagation properties of the waveguide between the ground and the ionosphere.
The circular explicitly states: “This is not a radio detection of GRB221009A.” That sentence matters. GRB 221009A was a gamma-ray burst, and the proposed atmospheric mechanism involved high-energy photons ionizing the upper atmosphere. The event therefore demonstrates that a sufficiently intense high-energy burst can alter ionospheric radio propagation; it does not demonstrate that an FRB’s radio pulse interferes with communications.
Which communications can ionospheric conditions affect?
- High-frequency and other long-distance radio links: Reflections can extend a signal’s range or send an unexpected signal into a channel already in use.
- Aviation and maritime communications: NASA’s descriptions specifically identify aircraft and shipping links as services that can experience interference or temporary unreliability when ionospheric layers change.
- GPS and navigation: Changes in ionospheric plasma can introduce uncertainty into radio-based positioning. This is a propagation and timing problem in the atmosphere, not an FRB effect.
- Radio astronomy: Human-made transmissions can mask faint celestial signals. In this case the telescope’s observation is degraded; consumer communications are not being attacked by the astronomical source.
The severity and frequency of these effects depend on the radio band, geometry, local ionospheric state and transmitter and receiver design. A statement that “the ionosphere can interfere with radio” is therefore not a statement that every radio service will fail whenever an unusual layer appears.
Could an FRB be detected on Earth without disrupting anything?
Yes. Detection and disruption have very different thresholds. A scientific receiver can combine a broad frequency range, precise timing and statistical processing to identify a short pulse that is far below the level needed to desensitize nearby communications equipment. Astronomers may record an FRB while a phone call, broadcast or aircraft link continues normally.
Even if a burst is bright by astronomical standards, its brief duration and distant origin matter. A communication system would need the arriving signal to overlap its operating frequency, timing and reception path at a level that changes the receiver’s behavior. The cited sources provide no observation of that happening for an FRB.

What should you do if a radio link becomes unreliable?
There is no evidence-based need for households to install shielding, purchase a special “FRB protector,” or take emergency action when astronomers announce a burst. The material cited here supports no consumer product that prevents or mitigates an FRB-related communications effect.
- Identify the service and band. Note whether the problem affects cellular data, Wi-Fi, GPS, shortwave, aviation radio, marine radio or another system. Different bands respond differently to propagation changes.
- Check local and provider information. Look for an outage notice, maintenance event, severe-weather report or geomagnetic/ionospheric alert. These are more relevant starting points than an FRB announcement.
- Test a second receiver or location. If only one device or one site is affected, the cause may be equipment, cabling, power or local interference rather than the ionosphere.
- Use an approved alternate channel. Aviation, maritime and emergency operators should follow their established procedures and licensing requirements rather than improvising frequencies.
- Report persistent interference. Contact the network operator or the relevant communications regulator with the time, frequency, location and symptoms. Those details help distinguish a local transmitter problem from a propagation event.
These steps address ordinary communications troubleshooting. They are not special countermeasures for FRBs.
What scientists still do not claim
- No cited source reports a confirmed FRB causing a terrestrial communications outage.
- No cited source gives a current rate of FRB exposure at a particular point on Earth.
- No cited source establishes a consumer mitigation device, shielding requirement or health warning for FRB radio pulses.
- The 2019 estimates of thousands of bursts per day and source radiation energy many billions of times that of Galactic pulsars should not be presented as current counts or as measurements of signal strength at Earth.
Those limits are important because they keep an astronomical description from being turned into an unsupported engineering or safety claim.
Why radio astronomy equipment is not a protective device
NASA’s Radio JOVE project describes educational antennas and receivers for observing radio emissions from the Sun, Jupiter and the Galaxy. Such equipment can help students and hobbyists learn how radio signals propagate and how terrestrial interference masks celestial sources. It is an observing setup, not a shield for a home, phone, GPS receiver or radio link, and it is not marketed in the cited material as protection from FRBs.

Bottom line
Fast radio bursts are distant, millisecond radio pulses, and current documented evidence does not show them interfering with communications on Earth. The radio problems people can experience are explained by Earth’s ionosphere reflecting or refracting signals, while the notable GRB 221009A disturbance involved atmospheric ionization by X-rays and gamma rays and was explicitly not a radio detection. Treat the 2019 FRB population and source-energy figures as historical astronomical estimates, not as a measure of present-day communications risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are fast radio bursts the same as solar radio bursts?
No. An FRB is an extragalactic millisecond pulse, while a solar radio burst originates at the Sun. They are different source classes and require separate evidence before linking either one to a particular communications effect.
Can an FRB damage a phone or GPS receiver?
No such damage or receiver failure is documented in the cited sources. GPS uncertainty discussed by NASA is associated with changing ionospheric plasma, not with an FRB radio pulse.
Why do astronomers call some FRBs extremely energetic?
The comparison refers to radiation energy density at the distant source. It does not equal the signal power delivered to equipment on Earth and should not be interpreted as a hazard measurement.
