Short answer: NVIDIA officially requires an RTX GPU for RTX Remix. A current community report for the Fallout: New Vegas RTX project says AMD Radeon RX 6000-series and newer cards, plus desktop Intel Arc cards, are compatible, but that claim is unofficial and does not prove a particular frame rate or image quality. Pre-RTX GeForce GTX cards can run the original Fallout: New Vegas, yet no authoritative source confirms them for the RTX Remix renderer. An RTX 4070-class card with 12 GB of VRAM is NVIDIA’s recommended starting point for RTX Remix generally.
What “run” means in this case
There are three different outcomes people often collapse into the word run:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Launch: the game and Remix runtime open without an immediate crash.
- Render correctly: lighting, materials, geometry and menus appear without major defects.
- Play at a satisfactory frame rate: the card sustains the resolution, ray-tracing quality and latency you want.
The available evidence is strongest for NVIDIA’s hardware baseline and weaker for this particular mod’s AMD support. A report that a card is “compatible” generally addresses launching or basic rendering; it is not a performance guarantee. Path-traced lighting can be dramatically more demanding than the unmodified game, even when the original game itself runs at high frame rates.

NVIDIA’s current RTX Remix Technical Requirements state that an RTX GPU of any model is the minimum for using RTX Remix and its mods effectively. NVIDIA recommends a GeForce RTX 4070 or faster with 12 GB of VRAM. That recommendation is for the RTX Remix platform, not a measured minimum specifically for the Fallout: New Vegas project.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
The reason for the requirement is architectural. RTX Remix uses modern GPU features to replace or augment the original renderer with ray-traced lighting, physically based materials and related effects. NVIDIA’s documentation describes the runtime as intercepting DirectX 8 or DirectX 9 fixed-function calls. The renderer does not directly support OpenGL or older DirectX versions. Even a game that technically uses a supported DirectX generation can still crash, render incorrectly or require project-specific fixes.
Why an RTX 4070 recommendation is not a hard cutoff
“Recommended” does not mean a slower RTX card cannot start the mod. It means NVIDIA considers that class of hardware a sensible target for the workload and its 12 GB memory capacity. Resolution, ray-tracing settings, texture upgrades, frame-generation options, CPU speed and the project’s own optimization all affect the result. Conversely, an older or lower-tier RTX card may satisfy the official architecture requirement yet deliver an unpleasant frame rate at a high resolution.
AMD Radeon support: what is known
A current community report for the Fallout: New Vegas RTX project lists Radeon RX 6000-series and newer GPUs as compatible. It also lists desktop Intel Arc cards. This is a project-level statement, not an NVIDIA certification, and it can change when the mod or Remix runtime changes.
The report does not publish a validated minimum VRAM capacity, frame-rate benchmark, resolution target or quality preset for AMD cards. Therefore, an RX 6800 falls inside the reported compatible generation, but there is no evidence here that it matches an RTX 4070, maintains a particular frame rate, or avoids every rendering defect. Treat RX 6000-and-newer support as an opportunity to test the current build rather than a promise of equivalent performance.
Why AMD support can differ from NVIDIA support
RTX Remix is developed around NVIDIA’s RTX feature set, while AMD cards use a different ray-tracing architecture and driver stack. A community port or project configuration may make the runtime function on AMD through the APIs and extensions exposed by the driver, but compatibility depends on the exact runtime, game build, mod assets and driver behavior. A runtime update can improve or regress that situation without changing the underlying GPU generation.
For an AMD system, check the project’s current compatibility notes immediately before installation, use a current graphics driver, and keep a copy of the original game installation. If the project documentation changes its supported-card list, that newer project statement supersedes an older report.

Older Nvidia cards: GTX and earlier
No authoritative source confirms pre-RTX GeForce support for the RTX Remix renderer in Fallout: New Vegas. A GTX 900-, GTX 10- or older card can be perfectly capable of running the original game, but that fact does not satisfy NVIDIA’s published RTX Remix baseline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe distinction matters because the original title was designed for far older hardware. Bethesda lists a GeForce 6-series or ATI 1300XT-series equivalent for the unmodified PC game. That requirement describes the 2008-era renderer and cannot be reused as an RTX Remix requirement. A GTX card may launch the unmodified game while failing to initialize Remix, falling back to an unsupported path, crashing during scene loading or displaying severe lighting and material errors.
Practical expectation for a GTX owner
Plan on two separate installations or profiles: one for the original game and one experimental attempt at the RTX project. If the project’s current notes do not explicitly list your GTX model, consider Remix support unverified. Do not buy the mod expecting a software setting to add RTX hardware features that the GPU does not provide. The reliable option for a GTX system is the original game or non-Remix visual mods that use the card’s supported rendering path.

When comparing a candidate card, use four checks in this order: ray-tracing-capable architecture, a driver that exposes the required Vulkan and graphics functionality, enough VRAM for the project’s texture and lighting workload, and an explicit compatibility statement for the exact mod build. The fourth check is essential for AMD and Intel because platform support is project-dependent.
How to check your own PC before installing
- Identify the exact GPU. In Windows, open Settings, choose System, select Display, open Advanced display, and note the adapter model. You can also use Device Manager under Display adapters. Record whether the card is desktop or laptop.
- Check the architecture. An RTX-branded GeForce meets NVIDIA’s official class. A Radeon RX 6000-or-newer or desktop Intel Arc card needs confirmation against the project’s current compatibility notes. A GTX or older card should be treated as unsupported for Remix unless the project explicitly says otherwise.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver offered for your exact model from the GPU vendor. Reboot before testing; a partially installed driver can produce misleading crashes.
- Confirm the game version and renderer path. Start an unmodified copy of Fallout: New Vegas first. If the base game cannot reach its menu, fix that installation before adding a new runtime.
- Back up saves and configuration files. Keep the original executable, saves and configuration outside the modded folder so a failed experiment cannot overwrite a working setup.
- Read the project’s release notes for the exact build. Look for GPU exclusions, required runtime versions, known crashes and recommended settings. Compatibility can change between releases.
Installing and testing safely
Use the project’s own installation instructions for file names and load order; RTX Remix projects can require a particular runtime and asset package. The safe testing pattern is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Install or verify a clean Fallout: New Vegas copy and launch it once.
- Install the specified RTX Remix runtime and the project files into a separate mod profile or duplicate game directory.
- Launch at a conservative resolution with default quality settings. This distinguishes an initialization problem from a workload problem.
- Load a controlled save in an indoor area and then an outdoor area. Note crashes, missing surfaces, incorrect transparency, black geometry and severe stutter.
- Increase resolution or ray-traced quality one setting at a time. Record which change causes a performance collapse.
- Keep the original profile available so you can play while diagnosing the Remix build.
If the project refuses to start, remove optional texture or post-processing packs first and retest the base Remix runtime. If the runtime starts but a particular location crashes, the fault may be an asset or scene compatibility issue rather than proof that the GPU generation is wholly unsupported.

Common failure modes and fixes
The original game launches, but Remix does not
This usually indicates that the two hardware baselines have been confused. Verify that the GPU meets NVIDIA’s RTX requirement or appears on the project’s current AMD/Intel list. A successful launch of the unmodified game is not evidence that the Remix renderer can initialize.
A menu appears, then the game crashes while loading
Check the exact runtime version, mod load order and driver installation. Test with the project’s default assets before adding texture packs. If only one save or location fails, test a new game; a damaged save or incompatible scene can mimic a hardware problem.
The image is black, missing objects or covered in visual artifacts
These are renderer or asset defects, not necessarily a lack of raw GPU power. Confirm that the game uses the DirectX path expected by the project and that no OpenGL wrapper or unrelated graphics injector is active. Report the reproducible scene, GPU model, driver and runtime version to the project maintainers.

It runs but feels slow
Lower output resolution and ray-traced effects before judging compatibility. Heavy texture packs increase VRAM pressure, while outdoor scenes can be more demanding than interiors. Watch for stutter caused by asset streaming rather than average frame rate. The available project report publishes no AMD performance target, so do not infer one from the RX model number alone.
Choosing between an upgrade and the original game
Keep the original game when reliability is the priority
The Bethesda baseline is deliberately modest: a GeForce 6-series or ATI 1300XT-series equivalent is listed for the unmodified title. Hardware that meets that specification can still need modern operating-system, driver or community fixes, but it does not need RTX Remix features. This is the dependable path for a GTX owner or for an AMD card below the reported RX 6000 generation.
Use Remix when you accept project-level uncertainty
An RTX card gives you the clearest match to NVIDIA’s official platform requirement. An RX 6000-or-newer card may work according to the current project report, but you should be comfortable testing a changing community build and diagnosing defects. Desktop Arc owners face the same project-specific qualification.
Upgrade for a target experience, not a label
If your goal is high-resolution, path-traced play with large texture packs, start from NVIDIA’s recommended RTX 4070-class, 12 GB configuration rather than the bare “any RTX” minimum. If your goal is simply to see whether the mod opens, a lower RTX model may be a reasonable experiment, but the result should not be generalized to every scene or setting.

Quick Recap
Bottom line for the three questions readers ask most
- Will an AMD GPU work? RX 6000-series and newer Radeon cards are listed as compatible by a current community report for this project. Verify the exact release and expect no guaranteed frame rate or VRAM target.
- Will an RX 6800 work? It is within the reported RX 6000-or-newer range, so it is a plausible candidate. Compatibility and performance remain project-dependent and unofficial.
- Will an older Nvidia GTX card work? It can run Fallout: New Vegas itself, but pre-RTX Remix support is not confirmed. Treat the RTX project as unsupported unless its current documentation explicitly adds your model.
