Sometimes. A mask, sunglasses, or appearance-changing makeup can reduce facial-recognition accuracy, but none creates a dependable on/off barrier. Results depend on the algorithm, whether the system is verifying a claimed identity or searching a crowd, how much of the face is covered, image quality, and whether the reference image shows the same appearance.
Studies of automated systems and studies of human observers measure different tasks, so their percentages cannot be mixed. The strongest evidence shows that masks can sharply increase automated matching errors in some conditions, sunglasses can disrupt both machines and people, and makeup can alter recognition decisions without proving a reliable way to avoid identification.

What “identify” means in a facial-recognition system
Facial recognition is not one single test. Two common operations produce very different questions and error rates:

The system asks, “Is this person the same as the enrolled person?”
- One-to-many identification: an image is compared with a gallery of many people, such as a watch-list search. The system asks, “Whose face, if anyone, is this?”
The best-known mask numbers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) concern one-to-one verification. They should not be presented as the probability that a person will be recognized by every surveillance camera.

Human observers perform yet another task: remembering a face and deciding whether a later image shows the same person. A human face-memory experiment cannot serve as an accuracy benchmark for a commercial algorithm.
Can a mask stop facial recognition?
A mask can make matching substantially harder, especially when the system was developed with mostly uncovered faces. In NIST’s 2020 evaluation, the best-performing results among 89 commercial algorithms had error rates from 5% to 50% when digitally masked images were matched against the same people’s unmasked reference photos. In the same test setup, the most accurate algorithms had an unmasked failure-to-authenticate rate of about 0.3%.
Those figures describe a controlled benchmark, not a universal real-world rate. NIST digitally applied the masks to photographs, and the exact shape and position of the covering mattered. Covering more of the central face, including the nose, generally raised errors. A physical mask can wrinkle, shift, cast shadows, expose different amounts of skin, or be worn at an angle, so its effect will not exactly match a digital overlay.

NIST’s December 2020 account added 65 newly submitted algorithms, bringing the cumulative total to 152. Some newer submissions reduced error rates by as much as a factor of 10 compared with pre-pandemic versions. Performance still varied widely, and the masks remained digital simulations. NIST advised end users to evaluate the software they actually deploy under their own conditions, ideally with physical masks rather than simulated ones.

The specific NIST one-to-one mask benchmark was discontinued in February 2024; its posted results were last updated in March 2024. That status makes the leaderboard useful historical context, not a live guarantee about a current phone, border checkpoint, or camera network.
Does a physical mask work better than a digital mask?
There is no single answer. A physical mask may introduce texture, folds, shadows, and irregular edges that a uniform digital patch does not reproduce. A separate study using the Real World Occluded Faces (ROF) dataset found significant performance declines for the tested deep face models on actual images containing masks and sunglasses. The authors also reported that synthetic occlusions were less challenging than real-world ones because real coverings differ in texture, position, and area.
That finding means real masks can be difficult for the models examined in that study; it does not establish a guaranteed result for every commercial product. Camera resolution, lighting, face angle, motion blur, and the software’s training data can all change the outcome.
Do sunglasses stop facial recognition?
Sunglasses can reduce recognition accuracy because they hide the eye and eyebrow region, which people and algorithms often use as a strong facial cue. The ROF study described above found significant declines for its tested models on real-world sunglasses images. Its dataset contained 4,627 sunglasses images, alongside 6,421 neutral images and 678 masked images. Those counts describe the study resource, not a population-wide success rate.

Sunglasses are not a reliable invisibility device. Frames vary in width, lens darkness, reflectivity, and position. A camera may still capture the nose, cheeks, jawline, ears, hairline, and face shape. Other information—such as body height, clothing, location, gait, or an account identifier—may also be available to a system, although those are not facial-recognition measurements.
What human observers do with sunglasses
A 2023 face-memory study with 135 participants compared uncovered faces with faces wearing sunglasses over the eyes and eyebrows or surgical masks over the lower face. In that experiment, sunglasses caused larger reductions in sensitivity than masks. Identification also became harder when the appearance at learning did not match the appearance at the later test.
This result concerns human memory under the study’s conditions, not an automated camera’s score. Different viewing times, image quality, tasks, and observer experience can produce different outcomes.

Makeup can change recognition decisions because it alters apparent contrast, color, contours, and the visual relationships between facial features. A 2020 paper by Rathgeb, Drozdowski, and Busch examined cosmetics as “makeup presentation attacks,” in which a person attempts to resemble a target, and evaluated a detection method using the MIFS database.

The paper supports a narrower conclusion: appearance-altering cosmetics can negatively affect some recognition decisions and can be relevant to presentation-attack detection. It does not demonstrate a dependable consumer makeup routine that prevents identification. The study’s attack setting, database, and proposed detector are not the same as ordinary daily makeup or every deployed recognition system.
Why makeup results are especially variable
Makeup changes gradually across the face rather than hiding one fixed region. Foundation can reduce visible texture; contouring can alter perceived shape; eyeliner and shadow can change the eye region; lipstick changes the lower-face color. Lighting, camera processing, skin tone, application skill, and whether the enrolled reference image was also made up can all affect the comparison. Because these variables interact, a cosmetic effect observed in one algorithm or dataset cannot be converted into a promise that a particular style will defeat recognition.
What determines whether you are recognized
Coverage is only one part of the decision. The following factors can push a match toward acceptance, rejection, or a request for another image:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Reference-image mismatch: A masked probe compared with an uncovered enrollment photo is harder than two images showing similar appearances. The reverse can also matter if the reference is masked and the probe is not.
- Location of the covering: NIST’s mask tests found nose coverage and the amount of face hidden affected errors. Sunglasses remove information around the eyes and eyebrows.
- Image conditions: Low light, glare, blur, extreme head angles, distance, and a partially out-of-frame face reduce usable information independently of a disguise.
- Algorithm and version: NIST observed large differences among algorithms, including major improvements in some post-pandemic submissions.
- Task design: A one-to-one login check has a different threshold and failure mode from a one-to-many gallery search.
- Re-enrollment and policy: A service may ask for a new capture, fall back to a passcode, or send the case to a human reviewer instead of simply declaring a person unknown.
Automated systems and human identification are not interchangeable
| Evidence | What was tested | Key result | What the result does not show |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIST, 2020 | 89 commercial algorithms; one-to-one matching of digitally masked images against unmasked references | Best tested algorithms showed 5%–50% error rates; unmasked failure-to-authenticate was about 0.3% in that setup | A universal rate for physical masks, current products, or one-to-many surveillance |
| NIST account, December 2020 | 65 new submissions, 152 cumulative algorithms; digitally applied masks | Some newer algorithms reduced errors by up to a factor of 10 versus pre-pandemic versions; performance still differed | A guarantee that every later deployment performs similarly |
| ROF study, 2021 | Three deep face models using real-world occluded images | Significant declines with real masks and sunglasses; synthetic occlusions were less challenging | Results for every model, camera, or commercial service |
| Scientific Reports study, 2023 | 135 human participants remembering uncovered, masked, and sunglasses-wearing faces | Sunglasses produced larger sensitivity reductions than masks in that experiment; disguise mismatch made identification harder | Automated-recognition accuracy or a general result for all human tasks |
How to interpret a camera result in practice
If a system accepts your face while you are masked or wearing sunglasses, that does not prove the covering had no effect. The system may have used a tolerant threshold, a high-quality image, a reference photo with similar coverage, or another signal in its workflow. If it rejects you, that does not prove the disguise is effective against every system; it may reflect poor lighting, camera angle, motion, or an intentionally strict threshold.
Best Value
For a one-to-one login or identity check
- Check whether the service’s instructions require an uncovered face, clear eyes, or removal of glasses. Those requirements are operational rules, not evidence that the system always fails with coverings.
- Use even lighting and keep your face inside the guide shown on screen. This isolates the effect of the mask, glasses, or makeup from avoidable image-quality problems.
- If the capture fails, follow the service’s documented fallback, such as a passcode, identity document, or human review. Do not assume repeated attempts will improve privacy; they may simply create more stored images or lock the account.
- Ask the provider how biometric templates are stored, how long captures are retained, and how to request an alternative process where local law provides one.
For organizations deploying recognition
- Measure the exact software version and camera setup in the locations where it will operate.
- Test real physical masks and eyewear, not only digital overlays.
- Report false matches and false non-matches separately, with the verification or identification task clearly labeled.
- Include appearance changes between enrollment and use, and provide a non-biometric alternative for people who cannot or do not wish to present an uncovered face.
- Review privacy, notice, retention, access, and human-review procedures. The Federal Trade Commission’s historical guidance in Facing Facts: Best Practices for Common Uses of Facial Recognition Technologies provides official context for responsible use.
Common misconceptions
“A mask makes me unrecognizable.”
It can increase errors, but NIST’s results include many successful matches even when the probe image was digitally masked. No study here supports treating a mask as a guaranteed barrier.
“Sunglasses are better than a mask.”
The human study found a larger sensitivity reduction from sunglasses than masks in its experiments, while the automated ROF study found declines for both. Those results cannot rank products or predict a particular camera’s behavior.
“Heavy makeup defeats every algorithm.”
Makeup-related presentation attacks show that cosmetics can affect decisions, but they do not establish a reliable everyday concealment technique.
“A benchmark percentage tells me my personal odds.”
The 5%–50% NIST range came from particular algorithms, images, mask simulations, and a one-to-one protocol. It is not an individual probability for all cameras or situations.
Bottom line
Masks, sunglasses, and heavy makeup can make facial recognition less accurate, sometimes substantially. Masks produced 5%–50% error rates for the best of 89 algorithms in NIST’s 2020 digitally masked, one-to-one test, while later algorithms improved unevenly. Real-world occlusion studies found declines for masks and sunglasses, and a human-memory study found especially strong disruption from sunglasses. None of these findings proves reliable concealment. Treat any covering as a variable that may trigger an error or a fallback—not as a dependable way to prevent identification.
