Yes, in some cases. An employer can use a supported mobile device management (MDM) service and carrier provisioning to install or manage an eSIM on a compatible, enrolled phone. What IT can do depends on the phone and operating system, carrier, MDM features, and whether the device is company-owned or personally owned. On BYOD devices, employees may retain important controls, including the ability to activate or delete an eSIM.
What “manage an eSIM” can mean
An eSIM is a digital cellular profile installed on a compatible phone and provisioned through a carrier. Management is not one universal switch: it can refer to installing a profile, restricting changes to profiles, or changing carrier service. Each action depends on support across the device, carrier, MDM, and enrollment setup.

For supported Apple devices, Apple documents MDM-triggered eSIM installation, restrictions that can prevent users from adding or removing eSIMs, and a command to change carrier. These capabilities are conditional, not a promise that an employer can control every eSIM on every phone. Apple’s eSIM deployment guidance describes the supported workflow.
Google’s Android Enterprise materials describe eSIM provisioning and removal on managed devices, while specifying that on personally owned Android devices the user is responsible for activating the eSIM and can delete it. Google’s Android Enterprise help explains this BYOD distinction.

How ownership and enrollment affect control
Company-owned phones
Organizations generally have broader options to apply device-level management to company-owned phones, subject to the platform, enrollment mode, carrier, and MDM’s supported controls. Android Enterprise distinguishes company-owned deployments from BYOD and corporate-owned personally enabled deployments, and supports work profiles to separate work apps and data from personal use. Android Enterprise management options outline these models.
Personally owned phones (BYOD)
BYOD does not automatically give an employer unrestricted control over the phone or its cellular service. On a personally owned Android device, Google says the employee activates the eSIM and can delete it. For Apple devices, User Enrollment is designed for personally owned phones: it gives the user more autonomy and keeps enterprise data in a separate, cryptographically protected volume. The exact available controls still depend on the organization’s configuration. Apple’s User Enrollment overview describes the separation.

Technical capabilities do not determine what an employer may legally require, monitor, or restrict. Those rules depend on workplace policy and local law.

MDM cannot provision cellular service by itself. The carrier must support the intended activation method and provide the information needed for it, which may include an SM-DP+ server address. The specific eSIM actions must also be supported by the MDM for the device platform and enrollment type.

- Universal Carrier Compatibility: This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.)
- Carrier Verification Required: Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility
- Simple Activation Process: When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service
- Package Contents: The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable
- Battery Health Guarantee: Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%
Microsoft Intune, for example, documents eSIM plan actions for supported Apple and Android Enterprise devices, but its documented feature does not support personally owned Android devices enrolled with a work profile. Its setup also requires carrier activation information. Intune’s eSIM configuration documentation is a concrete example of why broad claims about “MDM support” need checking against a specific setup.

- Verify device and OS support. Check the exact phone models, operating-system versions, and management commands required for the planned actions.
- Confirm carrier provisioning. Ask the carrier whether it supports the desired activation path and can provide required provisioning details, such as SM-DP+ information where applicable.
- Match MDM features to enrollment. Confirm that the MDM supports the needed command for the chosen ownership and enrollment model. For example, Intune excludes personally owned Android work-profile devices from its documented eSIM-plan feature.
- Define profile controls and lifecycle handling. Establish whether users may add, remove, activate, or switch profiles, and what happens when a phone is erased, replaced, or moved to another carrier.
- Plan provisioning capacity and timing. Apple notes that some carriers ask organizations to coordinate large automated provisioning events. Apple’s guidance addresses carrier coordination.
- Explain privacy boundaries. The BYOD notice should distinguish work data the organization manages from personal use and controls retained by the employee. Platform documentation describes technical features, not a complete employment-law analysis.
What to compare when choosing an approach
| Decision area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Ownership and enrollment | Whether phones are company-owned, corporate-owned personally enabled, or BYOD, and which enrollment mode applies. |
| Device and OS | Whether each exact model and operating-system version supports the required eSIM and management actions. |
| Carrier | Whether the carrier supports the activation workflow, coverage needs, provisioning information, and rollout volume. |
| MDM | Whether the selected service supports the necessary actions for that platform and enrollment mode. |
| Employee control and privacy | Which work-related controls apply and which personal-device choices remain with the employee. |
These checks matter more than a general claim that a phone or MDM “supports eSIM.” Apple and Google document different controls by platform and enrollment, and Intune’s published feature limitations illustrate that support can narrow further by device ownership.
