Microsoft Edge’s AI features have different access levels. Ordinary Copilot can receive page information only after you allow page context. Browse with Copilot, the agentic mode, can work with screenshots, open tabs, cookies, limited information from the current Edge profile, and site permissions. It cannot access autofill data, saved passwords, or wallet information while interacting with webpages, according to Microsoft’s documentation.
What Copilot can retain also differs by feature. Prompts, responses, and a work record are saved in conversation history. Agentic screenshots are saved with the conversation for up to 30 days unless you delete it. You can reduce exposure by disabling page context, using a fresh browser profile for agentic tasks, reviewing cookie-import and sync settings, and avoiding banking or other highly sensitive work.

There is no single “AI repair” privacy setting in Edge
Edge’s AI controls apply to specific features rather than to every form of browsing data at once. The two most important distinctions are ordinary Copilot page context and Browse with Copilot, an agentic mode that can navigate and interact with websites. Windows Copilot, account synchronization, and newer features such as Copilot Mode, Actions, and Journeys add separate controls.
If a question does not need information from the page you are viewing, Edge sends the query, the page URL, the page title, and previous conversation history to Copilot. If the question does need page context, Edge asks for permission. After you consent, it can send the query and the full browsing context for public pages indexed by Bing. This is different from silently giving every Copilot request access to your entire browser history.

What ordinary Copilot in Edge can see
Page context is an opt-in handoff
The relevant control is Settings > Appearance > Copilot and sidebar > Copilot > Allow Copilot to use browser content. When this permission is off, Copilot cannot use the current page as context for answers. When it is on and a request requires page information, Edge presents a permission prompt; accepting it allows the query and the page’s full browsing context to be sent for that public, Bing-indexed page.
“Full browsing context” is broader than a short excerpt. It can include the information Copilot needs to interpret the page, so treat an open page as potentially shareable whenever you approve the request. The permission is intended to be reversible: you can turn the setting off after a task or leave it disabled until a specific question requires it.
What ordinary page-context Copilot does not retain
Microsoft says ordinary Copilot in Edge does not store page content. That does not mean the interaction leaves no record: the prompt, response, and conversation remain subject to conversation-history controls. The distinction is important because deleting page content from Copilot’s stored data is not the same as deleting the conversation that contained your question and answer.
What Browse with Copilot can access
Browse with Copilot is the higher-risk capability because it can perform browsing tasks rather than merely answer from a page you supplied. Microsoft describes access to screenshots of pages it is using, currently open tabs, cookies, limited information from the current Edge profile, and site permissions.

Cookies can carry an existing sign-in
Cookies may preserve your existing sign-in on a website that Copilot is permitted to access. As a result, an agentic task can potentially operate inside an account that is already open in that browser profile. A cookie does not reveal a saved password to Copilot, but it can provide the authenticated session that the site itself uses to recognize you.
Data it cannot access while interacting with pages
Microsoft’s Browse with Copilot FAQ states that restricted Edge profile information includes autofill data, saved passwords, and wallet information. Copilot cannot access those categories while browsing and interacting with webpages. This limitation does not make an agentic session appropriate for sensitive work: a site may still display private account details after recognizing a cookie, and Copilot can act on pages that expose information in the visible interface.
Actions, screenshots, and page instructions
Agentic browsing can read what is rendered on a page and use screenshots to understand the task. Text on a malicious page can contain a prompt injection: instructions designed to redirect the agent, disclose information, or perform an unintended action. Microsoft labels the feature experimental and advises users to monitor activity rather than assuming that every action follows the original request.

Conversation history
Prompts, responses, and a record of Copilot’s work are saved in conversation history. For ordinary Copilot in Edge, Microsoft says conversation history remains until you delete it. The page content itself is not stored by Copilot, according to Microsoft’s Edge privacy documentation.

Agentic screenshots
Screenshots captured during Browse with Copilot are saved with the conversation. Microsoft says they are not used for training and are retained for up to 30 days unless you delete the conversation sooner. Deleting the conversation also deletes its associated screenshots.
Information typed into a website
Data you enter directly into a webpage is not saved by Copilot. It may still be saved by Edge or by the website, such as when a form is submitted, a message is posted, or a transaction is completed. Copilot’s retention statement therefore does not replace the site’s own privacy policy or your browser’s history and cookie controls.
Deleting activity
To remove ordinary Copilot activity, open the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard and choose Browsing and search > Copilot activity history > Clear all. Deleting an individual conversation is also the way to remove screenshots associated with that agentic session.

Windows Copilot has separate history and diagnostics controls
Windows Copilot can save browsing history on the device. Depending on your settings, that history may be sent to Microsoft to help fix problems and improve products. This is a separate data flow from the Edge page-context toggle.

Disable optional diagnostic sharing
In the Windows Copilot app, open Profile > Settings > Browsing settings > Web data and security > Privacy. Turn off optional diagnostic-data sharing if you do not want browsing history used for product troubleshooting or improvement. The exact availability of controls can vary by Windows and Copilot version, so check the labels shown in your installation.
Sign-in and synchronization
When you are signed in, Copilot can synchronize history, favorites, passwords, and other browser data with Edge. Synchronization makes information available across devices, which can broaden where that data is present even though it is not the same as giving an agent unrestricted access to every item.
The Windows Copilot app can also import Edge cookies at launch, but only when you explicitly enable Bring over your site data from Microsoft Edge. Review Sync and Import settings and leave cookie import disabled unless you have a specific reason to use it.

Prompt injection
Webpages can contain hidden or visible instructions aimed at the AI rather than at you. Those instructions may try to override the task, persuade Copilot to reveal information, or cause an action you did not request. Treat page text as untrusted input and watch the agent’s navigation, clicks, and submissions.
Unintended actions and financial exposure
An agent that can interact with a signed-in site may reach account settings, place an order, send a message, or change data if the task and page allow it. Microsoft specifically warns about unintended actions, financial exposure, and privacy risks.
Site-level safeguards
Microsoft says Edge blocklists high-risk sites, enhanced security settings provide site-level controls, and a first-use consent dialog explains how Browse with Copilot operates and what risks apply. These measures reduce risk but do not replace supervision or careful choice of browser profile.
How to reduce Copilot’s access step by step
- Disable page context by default. In Edge, open Settings > Appearance > Copilot and sidebar > Copilot, then turn off Allow Copilot to use browser content. Enable it only for a question that genuinely needs the current page.
- Use a clean profile for agentic browsing. Create a new Edge profile with no personal sign-ins, or clear cookies before starting Browse with Copilot. This reduces the chance that an existing session will be carried into an allowed site.
- Close unrelated tabs. Browse with Copilot can use currently open tabs. Keep only the pages required for the task and close email, cloud storage, health, financial, and work tabs.
- Review cookie import. In the Windows Copilot app and Edge’s synchronization or import controls, leave Bring over your site data from Microsoft Edge disabled unless you intentionally need that access.
- Turn off optional diagnostics. Use Profile > Settings > Browsing settings > Web data and security > Privacy in Windows Copilot and disable optional diagnostic sharing if you do not want browsing history used for troubleshooting or product improvement.
- Delete completed conversations. Remove Copilot conversations when they contain sensitive prompts or agentic work. Deleting the conversation removes the screenshots stored with it. For broader cleanup, use the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard at Browsing and search > Copilot activity history > Clear all.
- Watch every agentic action. Stop the task if a page presents instructions unrelated to your request, asks for secrets, or attempts a purchase, transfer, upload, or account change.
Should you use Browse with Copilot for sensitive tasks?
No. Microsoft advises against using agentic browsing for banking, credit-card details, government identification numbers, medical records, or highly confidential information. The restriction is sensible even though saved passwords and wallet data are blocked: cookies can preserve a logged-in session, page screenshots can capture visible account information, and an agent can encounter hostile instructions.

Copilot Mode, Actions, and Journeys
Microsoft’s Edge Blog said on October 23, 2025 that Copilot Mode could use browsing history only with user permission and that the permission could be turned off. The same announcement described Actions and Journeys as free, limited previews in the United States at that time. Availability and controls can change, so treat those features as opt-in capabilities and review their consent screens before enabling them.
What to do if Copilot already saw a page or screenshot
- Delete the Copilot conversation that contains the task; this removes associated agentic screenshots.
- Clear Copilot activity history in the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
- Sign out of the affected website and clear its cookies if an agentic session used an existing profile.
- Review Edge Sync and Import settings, especially cookie import and synchronization of passwords or favorites.
- Change credentials or contact the service if an unintended action occurred; Copilot’s retention controls cannot undo a transaction or message already accepted by the website.
The practical rule is simple: ordinary page context is permission-based, while Browse with Copilot is an agent that may inherit tabs, cookies, and visible account context. Keep page access off unless needed, isolate agentic work in a clean profile, delete conversations after sensitive sessions, and never use the agent for financial, medical, identity, or confidential-work tasks.
