Can DNA from the Air Identify a Burglar? New Study Finds a Promising but Unproven Lead

Not reliably yet. A new proof-of-concept study found that human DNA suspended in room air and dust can sometimes be recovered after a simulated burglary, but results varied sharply with household conditions. Airborne environmental DNA (eDNA) could eventually complement fingerprints, touch DNA and dust evidence; it is not currently a standalone way to identify an intruder in routine casework.

What the burglary experiment tested

An international team led by Oslo University Hospital tested whether investigators could collect human eDNA without first knowing which objects a person touched. The study, “Human airborne eDNA as forensic evidence in simulated residential burglaries,” was published in Forensic Science International: Genetics (DOI: 10.1016/j.fsigen.2026.103618).

Researchers collected 391 samples during controlled, 15-minute simulated burglaries in 22 households in Oslo and Australia. Sampling covered air, dust and household surfaces. Reports from Flinders University and Scimex describe the work as a proof of concept conducted at four locations, not a trial of routine evidence collection in real burglary investigations.

What airborne eDNA is

People continuously shed microscopic biological material. Skin cells, hair fragments and other particles can enter room air, settle into dust and move between surfaces. That dispersed material is called environmental DNA, or eDNA. In a forensic setting, an air or dust sample may contain DNA from residents, visitors and an intruder, often as a mixture rather than a clean profile.

Senior lecturer Dr. Mariya Goray described the mechanism as passive shedding and dispersal through airborne particles and dust, where material may persist even after cleaning. Persistence, however, does not mean the DNA came from the most recent visitor or can be assigned uniquely to a burglar.

What the researchers found

DNA could be recovered from air

The controlled tests showed that human DNA suspended in air can be detected. This expands the search area beyond a doorknob, window latch or other visibly touched object. Investigators could, in principle, sample a room even when the entry route and contact points are uncertain.

Recovery was inconsistent

The released summaries do not provide a single recovery percentage. Instead, they report substantial variation linked to air temperature, humidity, dust levels, existing household DNA, occupancy patterns, individual shedding, cleaning and other environmental influences. A negative or very small airborne sample therefore cannot establish that nobody entered.

Air is one part of a combined picture

Airborne profiles may be interpreted alongside dust and surface eDNA to examine recent or established occupancy patterns. That is an investigative contribution, not proof that an airborne profile uniquely identifies the person who committed a burglary.

How airborne, dust and surface sampling differ

Evidence type Sampling reach Need to know touched locations Main interpretation risks Environmental sensitivity Validation status in this study
Airborne eDNA Can sample a room’s air, including areas with no obvious contact point Low dependence on knowing exactly what was touched Resident DNA, mixtures, background contamination and uncertain timing Strongly affected by temperature, humidity, airflow, dust and delay Proof of concept; broader validation still required
Dust eDNA Samples accumulated material across a room or building Lower dependence than touch sampling, but location and dust movement matter Long-term accumulation can blur who was present and when Affected by cleaning, dust load and movement between rooms Used as a complementary source in the simulated study
Surface eDNA Focused on specific objects or areas High dependence on selecting likely contact points May miss an intruder who leaves little touch DNA; resident background remains possible Affected by cleaning, surface type and time since contact Used with air and dust for comparison in the simulated study

Why a positive air sample would not automatically solve a case

  • Background DNA: Residents, previous occupants and legitimate visitors may contribute material before the break-in.
  • Contamination: Investigators, emergency workers, pets, cleaning tools and air movement can introduce or redistribute DNA.
  • Mixtures: Several contributors may be present, making interpretation more difficult than reading a single-source profile.
  • Timing: DNA can remain from earlier occupancy, while delay before collection can reduce or alter what is recoverable.
  • Low shedding or protective clothing: Gloves, masks or other clothing can reduce an intruder’s contribution. Experienced burglars may leave only low-quantity, degraded or absent traces.
  • Environmental variation: Temperature, humidity, ventilation, dust and cleaning differ from one home to another, so controlled results cannot be transferred directly to every crime scene.

Does it work at real crime scenes?

That has not been established. The 22-household experiment used simulated 15-minute events under controlled conditions. The public study summaries do not show routine deployment in real burglary casework, a universal success rate or evidence that an airborne profile alone identified a suspect in court.

Dr. Roland van Oorschot of Victoria Police Forensic Services said standardized sampling, analytical and interpretation procedures are needed, along with validation after longer delays and across wider environmental conditions. Those steps are necessary before agencies can know how often an intruder-associated profile can be recovered and how confidently it can be separated from household background.

What would make the method forensically useful

  1. Standardize collection: Define where, how long and under what airflow conditions investigators collect air and dust samples.
  2. Control contamination: Record residents, responders and equipment, and use procedures that limit new DNA entering the scene.
  3. Build reference context: Document resident and regular-visitor profiles so background contributors can be recognized.
  4. Validate delays: Test scenes sampled hours, days and longer periods after an event, rather than only shortly after a simulation.
  5. Test broader environments: Include different climates, ventilation systems, cleaning routines, occupancy levels and building types.
  6. Set interpretation rules: Establish how mixed or low-level profiles should be reported and what conclusions are not justified.

PhD candidate Emily Bibbo said future casework would require careful interpretation of contamination risk, resident and unknown background DNA, and other environmental influences that affect recovery.

Bottom line for burglary investigations

Airborne eDNA is a credible additional evidence stream, especially when investigators do not know which surfaces an intruder touched. The Oslo-and-Australia study demonstrates detectability, not dependable identification. Until standardized methods and wider real-world validation are completed, air sampling should be treated as complementary evidence whose meaning depends on dust, surface results, household records and the scene’s environmental history.
