Yes—at the aggregate cash-flow level, DII buying can offset FII (now usually called FPI) selling. If domestic institutional investors purchase at least as much equity value as foreign investors sell during the same period and in the same market segment, net institutional flow is neutral or positive. That arithmetic does not guarantee that the Nifty 50, a sector or any particular share will rise. Domestic and foreign investors can trade different securities, and prices also respond to global risk appetite, valuations, earnings, currency moves, liquidity and derivatives positions.
What “offset” means in market data
“Offset” is used in three different ways, and confusing them leads to incorrect conclusions about FII selling.

| Meaning | What to compare | What it can and cannot show |
|---|---|---|
| Flow offset | Aggregate DII net purchases versus aggregate FII/FPI net sales over the same dates and market segment | Whether institutional money was a net buyer or seller overall; it does not show which securities moved |
| Price offset | Index, sector or share performance while the flows occurred | Whether prices held up; prices can fall even when aggregate DII buying exceeds FPI selling |
| Exposure offset | Stocks, sectors, market-cap groups and instruments traded by each group | Whether domestic purchases actually met selling pressure in the same names; aggregate data does not prove this |
For a simple flow calculation, add DII net purchases to FPI net purchases (a sale is a negative number):

A positive result means the two groups together bought more than they sold in that dataset. It is a statement about money flows, not a fixed prediction for an index return. There is no authoritative statistic that converts one rupee of FPI selling into a guaranteed percentage move in the Nifty or any other benchmark.
Who counts as a DII or FII?
SEBI’s domestic institutional investor (DII) grouping includes domestic mutual funds, banks, financial institutions, insurance companies and corporates. Their transactions are reported as a combined category even though these institutions have different mandates, liabilities and time horizons. Mutual-fund purchases funded by systematic investment plans (SIPs), an insurer’s portfolio rebalance and a bank’s proprietary trade can therefore appear in the same DII total.
“FII” is the older market term. Current regulatory and exchange reporting generally uses FPI (foreign portfolio investor). In a daily flow table, FII/FPI figures represent the foreign-investor category reported for the specified cash-market segment; they do not automatically include every futures, options, swap or currency position held offshore.
What the official record shows
The following episodes demonstrate both sides of the answer: domestic institutions have supplied substantial demand during foreign selling, yet an aggregate offset has not guaranteed an immediate rise in prices.

| Through 14 August 2024 NSE Market Pulse, August 2024 |
Net DII inflows reached ₹1.83 lakh crore. NSE also reported that DIIs put ₹50,918 crore into Indian equities after the budget day while foreign investors were selling. | FPIs had turned sellers; the NSE described the domestic buying as offsetting the impact of post-budget FPI selling. | The Nifty 50 nevertheless fell 3.2% in August through 14 August 2024, showing that flow offset and price performance can diverge. |
| October–20 November 2024 NSE Market Pulse, November 2024 |
DIIs invested ₹1.07 lakh crore in October 2024 and US$3.75 billion in November 2024 through 20 November. | FPI equity outflows continued. | NSE said the domestic flows provided downside support. Cumulative FY25-to-date DII inflows reached US$44.4 billion (₹3.7 lakh crore) by that report. |
| January 2026 and end-December 2025 SEBI Bulletin, 2026 |
SEBI reported ₹69,301 crore of DII net inflows in January 2026 and ₹6.9 lakh crore of cumulative DII inflows during the first ten months of FY26. | SEBI described sustained FPI outflows during the period. | At end-December 2025, DII ownership of NSE-listed companies was 18.4%, compared with 16.7% for FPIs. SEBI called DIIs a resilient pillar counteracting persistent foreign selling. |
These are aggregate, officially reported observations. They establish that domestic institutions can be large enough to cushion foreign outflows, not that they buy every share sold by a foreign investor.
Why a flow offset may not lift the Nifty
DIIs and FPIs may buy and sell different securities
A foreign fund reducing large private-bank or technology positions can be met by domestic buying in state-owned companies, mid-caps or another sector. The rupee totals may cancel while the stocks with the heaviest foreign selling continue to fall. An index is affected by its constituents’ weights, so buying spread across smaller companies may not counter selling concentrated in a few high-weight names.
Prices are set at the margin, not by ownership totals
Market prices change when the next available buy and sell orders meet. A relatively small order can move an illiquid share, while a much larger order in a liquid large-cap may have little immediate effect. DII and FPI flow totals measure completed net transactions; they do not reveal the order-book depth, urgency or price levels at which those transactions occurred.

The NSE’s daily participant series covers the reported capital-market cash segment. A foreign investor can sell shares while retaining index futures, buying options or hedging currency exposure. A domestic institution can buy cash equities while reducing risk through derivatives. Comparing a cash-market DII number with an FPI strategy that includes derivatives is not a like-for-like test.

Macro forces can overwhelm both categories
Global interest rates, geopolitical shocks, commodity prices, the rupee, earnings expectations and valuation changes can move Indian equities even when domestic and foreign cash flows look supportive. A market can rise despite net foreign selling if other buyers accept higher prices, or fall despite net domestic buying if risk aversion causes sellers to demand lower prices.
Daily figures are provisional
NSE publishes provisional daily FII/FPI and DII activity for the NSE, BSE and MSEI capital-market segments and provides downloadable files. Revisions, late reporting and differences between exchange and depository classifications mean that a single day should not be treated as a final measurement of investor intent.
The August 2024 example: offsetting money, falling index
The post-budget episode is a useful warning against treating “DIIs absorbed FPI selling” as equivalent to “the market must rise.” NSE reported ₹50,918 crore of DII purchases after the budget day while FPIs were selling, and cumulative DII inflows through 14 August were ₹1.83 lakh crore. Yet the Nifty 50 was down 3.2% for August through that date.

- Domestic purchases may have been distributed across sectors that were not the main source of foreign selling.
- Foreign selling may have occurred in index-heavy shares whose prices had a disproportionate effect on the Nifty.
- Investors may have repriced equities for tax, earnings or global-risk reasons at the same time as institutions were buying.
- Cash-market totals may not have captured futures, options or currency hedges that influenced prices.
The episode proves a narrow point: DII demand can provide a buyer for shares offered by foreign investors and still fail to prevent an index decline.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to test whether DIIs are cushioning FPI selling
Use a consistent time window and compare like-for-like data rather than reacting to a headline flow number.
- Choose the segment and dates. Use the NSE series for the same capital-market segment and the same start and end dates for both categories. Do not combine a one-day DII figure with a month-to-date FPI figure.
- Record net flows. For each category, take purchases minus sales. Keep the rupee or dollar unit consistent before adding the figures.
- Calculate the aggregate balance. Add DII and FPI net flows. A result near zero indicates aggregate neutrality; a positive result indicates net institutional buying; a negative result indicates net institutional selling.
- Check the index and sectors. Compare the Nifty 50, relevant sector indexes and market-cap segments over the same window. A positive flow balance with a falling index is not a calculation error; it is evidence that composition or other forces mattered.
- Inspect overlap. Where holdings or transaction data are available, check whether the groups traded the same large-cap names and sectors. Aggregate daily files alone cannot establish security-by-security matching.
- Review instruments and currency. Note whether derivatives activity, hedging or a sharp rupee move could make cash flows an incomplete measure of total exposure.
- Extend the horizon. Compare several weeks or months, not only one session. Persistent subscriptions can absorb a prolonged foreign exit, whereas a one-day inflow may be temporary.
Typical outcomes under different flow combinations
| Aggregate DII flow | Aggregate FPI flow | Likely interpretation | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strongly positive | Strongly negative | DIIs may cushion net institutional selling; the combined balance could be positive or negative depending on size. | Which stocks and sectors were sold, index weights, derivatives and global risk. |
| Positive | Slightly negative | Net institutional demand is likely positive in the cash-flow table. | Whether buying occurred at prices high enough to support the index and whether the flow persists. |
| Positive | Positive | Both categories were net buyers in that dataset. | Valuation, earnings, leverage and non-institutional flows can still drive prices lower. |
| Negative | Negative | Both categories were net sellers; downside pressure may be greater. | Liquidity, short covering, corporate actions and the exact measurement period. |
“Likely” in this table is deliberately conditional. The flow balance is an accounting result, not a guaranteed market signal.

Domestic mutual-fund subscriptions, including SIP contributions, can provide recurring rupee inflows that are less sensitive to a single overseas risk decision. Insurance and retirement-linked allocations can also create steady demand. This persistence helps explain why DIIs have sometimes continued buying for many consecutive months while FPIs were net sellers.
Best Value
Persistence is not automatic. Domestic investors can face redemptions, falling household savings, valuation concerns or a domestic economic shock. If subscriptions slow or withdrawals accelerate, the cushion can weaken even while foreign selling remains unchanged. The official figures show the scale of domestic participation; they do not establish a permanent one-for-one replacement for foreign capital.
What ownership percentages tell you
SEBI’s end-December 2025 ownership figures place DII ownership of NSE-listed companies above FPI ownership. That shift indicates that domestic institutions have become a large structural shareholder group, which can reduce the market’s dependence on foreign capital at the aggregate level.
Ownership is a stock measure—what investors hold at a point in time—whereas daily buying and selling are flow measures. A higher DII ownership share does not reveal whether DIIs will buy tomorrow, whether their holdings match foreign portfolios or how much of their exposure is hedged. Use ownership to understand market structure, and use matched-period flows to study current pressure.

- Official participant data is aggregated by investor category; it does not identify every fund, account, stock or order.
- No universal coefficient links one rupee of FPI selling to a fixed percentage change in an index.
- The published figures do not prove that a DII bought the exact shares sold by an FPI.
- Cash-market data does not by itself measure futures, options, swaps or currency positions.
- Provisional daily numbers can be revised, so apparent turning points may change.
These limits do not make the data useless. They define the question it can answer: whether domestic and foreign institutions were net buyers or sellers in the reported segment and period—not whether one group mechanically neutralized the other’s price impact.
Practical takeaway for investors
When headlines say that DIIs are buying while FIIs are selling, first ask whether the statement refers to the same dates, currency and cash-market segment. Then compare the combined flow with the index, the sectors under pressure and the persistence of domestic subscriptions. A positive net balance is evidence of a source of demand, not a promise that the Nifty will rise or that a particular stock has found a bottom.
