Yes—but only in a very specific sense. Researchers reported diamond needles about 300 nanometres wide bending under a controlled laboratory test without immediately breaking. The structures were etched from chemical-vapour-deposited (CVD) diamond films, attached to silicon, and pushed with a diamond indenter while viewed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). This does not show that a normal gemstone, jewelry setting, or piece of bulk diamond is flexible.
What “flexible diamond” means in this experiment
The phrase describes a mechanical response from an engineered nanostructure, not a new type of bendable jewelry. A nanometre is one-billionth of a metre, so a 300 nm-wide needle is far smaller than anything visible to the naked eye. At that scale, the geometry, surface condition and internal defect population can dominate how a material fails.

Diamond is famous for hardness, but hardness and flexibility are different properties. A material can resist scratching and indentation yet still fracture when a crack starts. The 2018 report by Emma Stoye in Chemistry World described needles thin enough to deflect under pressure during an in-SEM test. The report attributed the unusual behavior to the needles’ smooth surfaces and relatively low number of defects, which could reduce the sites where brittle cracks begin.

How the researchers made and tested the needles
The accessible account describes a sequence of fabrication and measurement steps. Each step matters because the result depends on the needle’s dimensions and surface quality, not simply on the chemical identity of diamond.
- Grow a thin film. The team synthesized thin diamond films using chemical vapour deposition. CVD builds diamond from a carbon-containing gas under controlled conditions and is commonly used when a thin, engineered layer is needed rather than a mined crystal.
- Etch tapered structures. The film was patterned and etched into tapering needles. Etching removes material to create the narrow geometry that can deflect under a small applied displacement.
- Mount the structures. The needles were mounted on a silicon sheet. The support provides a fixed base while leaving the tapered tip accessible to the test probe.
- Apply force in an SEM. A diamond indenter pressed the needle tips while the structures were observed inside a scanning electron microscope. The microscope allowed the researchers to see the deformation as it occurred rather than inferring it only from a before-and-after image.
The report gives the needle width as approximately 300 nm. It does not provide enough accessible detail to establish the exact length, taper angle, loading rate, applied force, measured strain, number of test cycles, or operating lifetime. Those values should not be inferred from the width alone.
What was actually observed
The needles bent under the indenter and did not immediately fail by the brittle fracture expected from a much larger or more defective diamond structure. The report says microscope observations and theoretical simulations supported the explanation that smoother surfaces and fewer defects make crack initiation less likely.

The bending was described as approaching a theoretical limit predicted by earlier calculations. That statement is qualitative in the accessible report: it is not a license to quote a specific strain, force or percentage without consulting the primary paper, A. Banerjee and colleagues in Science (2018), DOI 10.1126/science.aar4165.
A nanoscale beam can tolerate a larger elastic deformation than a bulk piece when the volume contains fewer critical flaws. In a larger object, a crack, inclusion or rough edge can concentrate stress and trigger rapid failure. Reducing the cross-section and improving the surface can remove or reduce those weak points. The result is not that diamond’s atomic bonds become soft; rather, the engineered structure can sustain bending before a fracture pathway becomes dominant.
Bulk diamond versus a 300 nm needle
| Feature | Conventional gemstone or bulk diamond | Reported nanoneedle experiment |
|---|---|---|
| Scale | Macroscopic object visible without a microscope | Approximately 300 nm wide |
| Form | Crystal, cut stone or larger engineered component | Tapering needle etched from a thin film |
| Material production | Not specified by the experiment; may be natural or manufactured | Thin diamond film grown by CVD |
| Support | Jewelry setting, tool body or other bulk mount | Silicon sheet |
| Loading method | Not part of the reported test | Diamond indenter pressing the tip |
| Observation | No flexibility claim established | Bending observed in an SEM |
| Application status | Not demonstrated by this work | Possible research directions only |
This distinction prevents the most common misunderstanding. You should not try to flex a ring stone, chip a diamond tool to test the claim, or treat a lab-grown gemstone listing as an example of the structures in the report. A gemstone and an etched nanoneedle differ in dimensions, shape, support and defect population.

Why fewer defects can change the failure mode
Fracture begins where stress becomes concentrated. In a rough edge, void, grain boundary or other imperfection, the local stress can exceed the material’s ability to hold the structure together even when the average applied stress appears modest. A crack then propagates quickly through a brittle solid.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The reported needles were made with smooth surfaces and a small volume. That combination can reduce the probability that a critical flaw is present at the most highly stressed location. The smoother boundary also avoids some of the notches that an irregular etched edge could create. Under those conditions, the needle can deflect elastically for a short distance instead of breaking at once.
This is a statistical and geometric advantage, not a universal transformation of diamond. A larger diamond component can still contain defects, and a nanoscale needle with a severe notch or manufacturing damage could fail. The report presents the defect-and-surface explanation as supported by microscopy and simulations; it does not establish that every diamond nanostructure will have the same response.

What the experiment does not establish
- No consumer flexibility. There is no evidence that a diamond gemstone, watch crystal or jewelry setting can be bent safely.
- No complete mechanical specification. The accessible report does not establish exact force, strain, displacement, needle length, fatigue life, yield point or repeatability across many samples.
- No mass-production process. The work describes fabrication of test structures, not a demonstrated commercial manufacturing line or production cost.
- No finished device. Data storage, optomechanical systems and bioimaging were suggested as opportunities, not demonstrated products or prototypes in this report.
- No guarantee of reversibility in every test. Seeing a needle deflect does not by itself prove unlimited cycling, zero permanent deformation or resistance to environmental damage.
These limits are important because “flexible” can imply a sheet, cable or repeatedly bendable part. The reported result is narrower: a particular nanoscale geometry survived a controlled indentation event while being watched in an SEM.

Data storage
The report identifies data storage as a possible direction for tuning diamond’s physical properties. A nanoscale structure that can move predictably could, in principle, act as part of a mechanically addressable element. However, the report does not demonstrate writing, reading, retention, endurance or an integrated storage array. None of those performance metrics should be assumed.
Optomechanical devices
Optomechanics combines light with mechanical motion. A tiny diamond element could be interesting where optical properties, stiffness and small motion need to coexist. The cited work does not show a resonator, optical readout, packaged device or measured optical performance. It establishes a mechanical phenomenon that future device research might exploit.

Bioimaging
Diamond is attractive to researchers because it can be engineered into small structures and can interact with optical or magnetic measurement techniques. The article lists bioimaging as another potential opportunity. It does not report an imaging instrument, a biological test, a safety assessment or an in-body application. “Bioimaging” here is a prospective research area, not a capability demonstrated by the needles.
Questions a follow-up study would need to answer
To move from an intriguing observation to a usable component, later work would need to report measurements that are not available in the accessible account.
- Geometry: exact length, taper profile, tip radius, width along the needle and attachment shape.
- Loading: force-displacement curves, indenter calibration, loading speed and the direction of applied force.
- Mechanical response: elastic range, maximum strain, onset of permanent deformation and fracture threshold.
- Reliability: number of needles tested, sample-to-sample variation, repeated bending cycles and failure statistics.
- Surface and defect analysis: roughness measurements, defect density and evidence linking those features to individual failures.
- Environment: temperature, vacuum conditions in the SEM, humidity exposure and behavior after removal from the microscope.
- Integration: methods for connecting the needles to electrodes, optical components or biological samples without damaging them.
These are the comparison axes that matter more than a headline claim. Two studies could both call a structure “flexible” while differing greatly in dimensions, fabrication, force, strain, reproducibility and whether any application was actually demonstrated.

How to interpret the 2018 result today
The report is best understood as a materials-science demonstration of size and defect effects. It shows that a material known for hardness and brittleness can display bending in a carefully engineered nanoscale form. That challenges a simple “diamond always snaps” intuition without overturning the practical behavior of bulk diamond.
The primary paper is A. Banerjee et al., published in Science in 2018 (DOI: 10.1126/science.aar4165). The details summarized here come from the accessible 21 April 2018 Chemistry World report describing that study. Because the publisher page for the paper was not accessible in the source material, exact numerical mechanical parameters beyond the approximately 300 nm width are intentionally not supplied.
Bottom line for “Can diamonds bend?”
A conventional diamond is not shown to be bendable. The reported result concerns CVD-grown, etched needles roughly 300 nm wide, mounted on silicon and pressed with a diamond indenter inside an SEM. Their smooth surfaces and low defect population may have delayed brittle fracture enough for bending to be observed. Data storage, optomechanics and bioimaging remain possible future uses, not products delivered by the experiment.
