Can Deleted Files Be Recovered? What Happens to Photos After Deletion

Yes, a deleted photo may sometimes be recoverable—but there is no reliable rule that it stays on a drive for weeks or months. Ordinary deletion usually marks file space as available for reuse rather than immediately overwriting every byte. Whether recovery remains possible depends on the storage type, what happens to the device afterward, and whether it has been securely sanitized.

What does deleting a file actually do?

On many systems, deleting a file removes or changes the filesystem record that points to its contents and makes the occupied space available for reuse. The contents are not necessarily erased at that moment. Microsoft explains that data deallocated by the operating system may be viewed and recovered with raw disk editors and recovery tools: Microsoft Learn: SDelete. NIST SP 800-12 likewise distinguishes overwriting data from deleting a file pointer: NIST SP 800-12, Chapter 14.

That distinction explains why a recovery tool can sometimes find a deleted photo: the file’s contents may still be present even though the normal folder listing no longer shows it. Recovery is not assured, however. The operating system may reuse the space, and device behavior or deliberate sanitization can make the data inaccessible.

Do deleted files remain recoverable for weeks or months?

No fixed period is established. “Weeks or months” is not a dependable technical retention window: a file might become unrecoverable sooner, or data might persist longer, depending on the storage medium, subsequent activity, device behavior, and whether sanitization has taken place. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal recovery rate or standard timeframe.

For a deleted photo you hope to retrieve, avoid writing new data to the affected drive. Further use can overwrite space that might otherwise contain recoverable content. Even if you stop using the drive, that does not guarantee recovery; the available evidence can be incomplete or inaccessible.

Why the storage type matters

Magnetic hard drives

On a magnetic hard drive, ordinary deletion can leave file contents in sectors until they are reused or deliberately overwritten. A recovery tool may be able to locate some contents, but success depends on the file and drive’s condition and what has happened since deletion.

SSDs and other flash storage

Flash storage makes simple “write over the file” assumptions less reliable. The host operating system’s view of a write does not necessarily correspond to which physical flash cells the device changes; unmapped physical media can complicate attempts to overwrite data. NIST’s earlier SP 800-88 Revision 1 discusses this limitation: NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1. For current sanitization decisions, consult Revision 2 rather than treating the older discussion as a complete procedure.

How to think about recovery versus secure erasure

If you want to recover valuable photos, stop using the storage device as soon as practical and consider qualified help if the files matter. No recovery method or service can promise retrieval.

If your goal is to prevent access to sensitive data, ordinary deletion is not enough. NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2 defines media sanitization as a process that makes access to target data infeasible for a given level of effort. Its guidance calls for choosing an applicable technique in light of the media and confidentiality requirements: NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 (2025).
