VitaShell is explicitly described by its project as an alternative replacement for the PS Vita’s LiveArea, giving you a file manager, package installer and FTP tool. Replacing the way you launch and manage content does not, by itself, prove that games or saves are deleted. The danger appears when a change also alters storage mounts, the content database, licenses or application paths. Back up first, keep a rollback route and verify those four items after the change.
What LiveArea actually does
LiveArea is more than a wallpaper or theme. Sony’s User’s Guide describes the Vita home screen as the place for application icons, folders and page navigation, with a maximum of 500 application icons. Each application also has its own LiveArea screen, where the available information and actions depend on that application.

That creates two layers that are often confused:
- The home screen shell: the page of bubbles, folders and navigation used to reach applications.
- Per-application LiveArea data: the screen and actions associated with one title.
A custom dashboard can change the first layer without necessarily rewriting the second. A tool that edits a title’s LiveArea data is doing something narrower than replacing the entire shell.
What a custom dashboard can replace
VitaShell as a practical replacement
The VitaShell project README calls it “an alternative replacement of the PS Vita’s LiveArea.” Its documented functions are a file manager, package installer and built-in FTP tool. In practical terms, that means you can use a different management and launching experience instead of relying exclusively on the stock bubble interface.

That wording should not be stretched into a claim that every system component is removed or that every firmware and plugin combination behaves identically. The project repository is archived, and compatibility can change as firmware, kernel plugins and storage arrangements change. Use instructions matched to the firmware and plugin versions on your particular Vita.
Per-title replacement is different
VitaSDK’s SceLiveAreaUtilUser reference documents sceLiveAreaReplaceAllSync and sceLiveAreaReplaceAllForTitleSync. These APIs replace LiveArea data for a specified title. They support custom content for individual applications; they are not evidence that the entire Vita shell has been globally replaced.
Themes are a third case
Changing a LiveArea theme alters the appearance of the existing interface. It is not the same operation as installing a launcher or dashboard, and it is not the same as replacing per-title LiveArea assets. Treat those as separate projects when assessing risk and planning a backup.

An interface replacement alone is not documented as a deletion operation. Sony documents Vita games as content stored on Vita cards or downloaded from PlayStation Store, and it separately documents saved-data copying, including copying between systems and uploading saves to PlayStation Network servers. Sony’s Content Manager documentation also covers copying, deleting, backing up and restoring games, applications and saved data with a PS3, computer or online storage; that guide applies to system software 3.73 or later.
The important qualification is access. A game bubble can disappear because the Vita is looking at a different storage mount, because the content database no longer points to the application, because a license is unavailable, or because the expected application path changed. Those conditions can make content inaccessible without proving that the underlying files were erased.

Therefore, the honest answer is conditional:
- Interface-only change: there is no cited evidence that simply using a different dashboard inherently deletes installed games or save files.
- Interface plus storage or database change: bubbles, applications or saves may become unavailable until the mount, database, license or path is corrected.
- Any migration without a verified backup: recovery options are limited if the new setup fails.
No universal success rate or guarantee that every homebrew dashboard preserves every title and save has been established. Do not treat a community setup as risk-free merely because another Vita survived it.
Back up before changing the shell, plugins or storage
Make the backup before installing a dashboard, changing kernel plugins or moving the content catalog. A backup made after a failed migration may already reflect missing database entries or an incorrect mount.

- Use the Vita’s saved-data tools to copy saves to another system when that option is available.
- Upload saves to PlayStation Network servers where the title and account support that function.
- For a local archive, use Content Manager to copy saved data to a PS3 or computer. Sony’s documented Content Manager backup and restore workflow applies to system software 3.73 or later.
Keep at least one backup that is not mounted as the Vita’s active game storage. A second copy protects you if the first copy is affected by a storage failure or an incorrect restore.
2. Preserve the relevant game storage
Record whether each important title is on a Vita card, the internal storage available on your model, or a removable storage arrangement. Sony’s documentation distinguishes games on Vita cards from downloads, so identify the source before changing mounts. Preserve the full relevant storage, not only visible bubbles: a dashboard can depend on directories and metadata that the stock shell normally hides.
3. Write down the working configuration
- System software version and model.
- Which storage is mounted as the main application location.
- Kernel and user plugins enabled, including their load order if your plugin manager shows it.
- Where the dashboard and its configuration files are installed.
- Which titles are physical-card games, downloaded games or homebrew packages.
This inventory turns a vague failure into a reversible change. If the Vita boots to a different storage mount, you can compare it with the known-good configuration instead of guessing.

SD2Vita migration is a separate risk
An SD2Vita adapter uses a microSD card as Vita storage. The YAMT/SD2Vita guide describes switching to microSD-based storage and says the process is intended to carry existing applications over, while warning that moving an existing game-and-save catalog can be complicated.
That distinction matters: replacing a launcher and migrating storage are not one operation. If you install a dashboard while also moving to SD2Vita, a later missing bubble does not tell you which layer failed. Back up first, test the storage mount by itself, and only then change the launcher.
A safer migration order
- Complete and verify the Sony save backups and your relevant storage copy.
- Install and test the SD2Vita storage arrangement with the stock launcher or your known-good setup.
- Confirm that representative physical-card, downloaded and homebrew titles appear and start.
- Only after storage is stable, install or enable the alternate dashboard.
- Keep the original storage and configuration untouched until the new arrangement has passed your checks.
Compatibility depends on the Vita model, firmware, adapter, microSD preparation and plugin versions. The guide’s statement that applications are intended to carry over is not a promise that every existing catalog will migrate without intervention.
How to install a custom dashboard without gambling your catalog
Exact menu names and plugin files vary by firmware, so do not follow an old, version-agnostic recipe. Use a current guide that matches your system software and the dashboard release. The risk-control sequence is stable even when the commands differ.
- Confirm prerequisites. Check the firmware, model, available storage and the dashboard’s stated plugin requirements before copying anything.
- Make and test backups. Restore a sample save or inspect the backup on the computer or PS3 so you know the copy is usable.
- Capture the original state. Photograph or write down the active mount, plugin list, title locations and dashboard configuration.
- Change one variable. If possible, install the dashboard without changing storage at the same time. A single-variable change makes recovery far easier.
- Reboot and check storage first. Before launching the new shell, verify that the expected storage device and mount are active.
- Check content in groups. Look for a physical-card title, a downloaded title, a homebrew application and a title with an important save. Start each one.
- Check saves in-game. A visible bubble is not enough. Open a title, confirm its save appears and perform a harmless save-and-reload test.
- Keep a rollback path. Do not delete the old dashboard, original storage or backup until the new setup has survived several reboots.
What to verify after the change
Storage mount
Confirm that the same device is mounted at the expected application location. If the dashboard shows an empty library while the card or internal storage still contains data, a mount mismatch is a more plausible first suspect than mass deletion.

Content database
The Vita uses database entries to present installed applications as bubbles. A database problem can hide content even when files remain on storage. Rebuild or refresh the database only with a procedure appropriate to your firmware and backup state; an indiscriminate database operation can create a new problem if the storage is not mounted correctly.
Licenses
Downloaded games rely on licenses associated with the account and content. If files are present but a title refuses to start, check the license and account state before copying or deleting folders.
Application paths
Verify that the dashboard is looking in the path where your games and homebrew are actually installed. A launcher can display an empty list simply because its configured directory differs from the one used by the stock shell.

Do not repeatedly rebuild databases, reinstall packages or move folders while the cause is unknown. Each write can make a clean rollback harder, especially when a save is at stake.

The fourth row is the one most likely to turn an interface project into a data-preservation project. Treat it as a separate change with its own backup and test cycle.

Practical answers to common decisions
Can I keep my Vita bubbles?
Usually, bubbles can remain available when the original storage, database, licenses and paths remain valid. A custom dashboard may present applications differently, and a storage or database mistake can hide them. Verify the mount and database rather than assuming the files were deleted.
Can I keep saves after installing homebrew?
Homebrew installation is not documented as an automatic save-deletion event. Keep Sony-supported copies and a separate storage backup, then test an important save after installation. If the save is absent, stop writing to the device and recover from the original mount or backup.
Is VitaShell a full replacement for every Vita system function?
