Police can ask Discord for account details, retained metadata such as an IP address, or stored content when they use legally valid and properly scoped process. What Discord can provide depends on the data requested, the jurisdiction, the urgency, and whether Discord still retains the records.
Discord may also preserve account data temporarily while investigators obtain the process needed for disclosure. Ordinary requests generally trigger user notice unless a law, court order, or safety exception permits Discord to withhold it.

What “track a Discord account” can mean

- Obtaining metadata: requesting retained information such as an IP address, operating-system details, browser information, or device settings.
- Obtaining content: seeking stored messages or other account content under the legal authority required for that category of data.
- Preserving records: asking Discord to hold existing data so it is not deleted while investigators seek disclosure process.
The published guidance does not establish that Discord gives police a continuously updated live location or an unrestricted live feed of a user’s activity. Actual records depend on Discord’s retention, the request’s specificity, and the applicable law.

What information Discord says it processes

An IP address can sometimes help investigators connect account activity to an internet connection, but it is not a guaranteed identity or precise physical location. A username alone may be ambiguous; Discord asks authorities to provide a usable identifier so it can locate the correct account, server, or message.
What legal process police must use
Discord says law-enforcement requests go through its Government Request Portal and must be legally valid, appropriately scoped, and specific enough to identify the relevant records. Its guidance refers to the Stored Communications Act (18 U.S.C. § 2701 et seq.), the Pen Register Act (18 U.S.C. § 3121 et seq.), and the Wiretap Act (18 U.S.C. § 2510 et seq.). The correct mechanism depends on the type of data sought and the jurisdiction; a subpoena, court order, and warrant are not interchangeable in every situation.

Discord says it reviews requests for legal compliance and limits any disclosure to the circumstances described by the request. A valid request therefore does not mean investigators receive a complete account history by default.
When Discord can disclose data in an emergency
Discord says it may respond to a U.S. or foreign law-enforcement emergency request without ordinary legal process when it has a good-faith belief that an emergency presents an imminent risk of death or serious bodily injury. The requester must provide specific facts, identify the data sought, and explain how the information would address the emergency.

Discord’s Q3 2022 transparency report described the rule this way: “We disclose user data to law enforcement absent legal process only when there is imminent risk of serious physical injury or death.” An emergency request is not a general shortcut for routine investigations, arguments, harassment reports, or curiosity about an account.
How preservation works
Under 18 U.S.C. § 2703(f), Discord says a preservation request initially holds account data for 90 days. Investigators can request one additional 90-day extension. The request keeps existing records available while the agency seeks the subpoena, court order, warrant, or other process needed for disclosure.
Preservation is not immediate access and cannot recreate information Discord no longer retains. Later legal process should include Discord’s internal preservation reference number so the company can match the disclosure request to the preserved records.

Will Discord tell you that police asked for your data?
For ordinary legal-process requests, Discord says it generally notifies the affected user and provides a copy of the process. Notice can be withheld when a law or court order prohibits it. U.S. authorities seeking nondisclosure must identify the applicable statute or provide a finite nondisclosure order under 18 U.S.C. § 2705(b).

Discord also identifies safety exceptions, including child-exploitation investigations or an imminent threat to life, in which it may forgo notice. Discord does not notify users about preservation requests or emergency disclosure requests.
What identifiers help Discord find the right account
Discord’s law-enforcement guidance asks for a precise identifier whenever possible:
- A 17- or 18-digit user ID
- Username
- Email address
- Phone number
- Server ID
- Message ID
Providing one of these does not guarantee disclosure. It helps Discord locate the target; the agency still needs legally sufficient authority for the requested data and time period.
How international requests differ
Cross-border investigations may require additional procedures. Discord says most foreign authorities should use mutual legal-assistance procedures. Requests involving users in the European Economic Area should generally be directed to Discord Netherlands B.V. and, where possible, submitted through a European Investigation Order under Directive 2014/41/EU. Requests involving other users are directed to Discord Inc.; Discord says it may provide information to foreign authorities when the request is valid under the requesting country’s law.

The company entity, user’s location, requesting country, and type of data can therefore affect both the route and the timing of a request.

Discord reported 1,450 legal-process requests in Q3 2022. It found 1,342 legally valid and specific enough to identify an account and produce relevant information, and it received 213 emergency disclosure requests during that quarter. Those figures are historical, not a current success rate or guarantee for an individual case. Discord’s Transparency Hub lists reporting through 2026 and is the appropriate place to check for newer totals.
Common situations
Can police find an account from only a username?
They may be able to ask Discord to search by username, but a username can be non-unique or changed. A user ID, email address, phone number, server ID, or message ID gives Discord a more reliable target.
Can police get the IP address?
They can request retained IP information through the process required for that data. Discord does not promise that an IP exists for every requested date or account, and an IP generally identifies an internet connection or network—not automatically a particular person or exact location.

Can police read Discord messages?
Stored messages may be obtainable when Discord still retains them and the agency uses the legal authority required for content. A request for messages is not automatically satisfied by a lower-level request for subscriber information.
Can police obtain deleted messages or a complete history?
Not necessarily. Availability depends on Discord’s retention and technical records, what was deleted, the requested time period, and the specificity and legal scope of the process. Preservation can hold existing data but cannot restore records that are no longer available.
Does Discord continuously report my location to police?
The cited policies identify IP and device-related information, but they do not establish continuous live-location sharing with law enforcement.
