Small controlled studies found coconut water produced post-exercise rehydration results similar to a carbohydrate-electrolyte sports beverage under the tested conditions. That does not make every coconut-water product a one-for-one substitute. The right choice depends on how long and hard you exercise, whether you need carbohydrate during the session, the sodium and carbohydrate listed on the label, and how your stomach tolerates the drink.
For a workout under an hour, plain water is often sufficient according to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). After a moderate session, coconut water can be a practical option if you like its taste and its label fits your needs. Prolonged or very intense exercise may require a drink with a deliberately specified carbohydrate and sodium content rather than relying on coconut water’s variable formulation.

What the direct studies actually found
The best evidence compares beverages after people have deliberately lost fluid through exercise. These trials are useful, but they are small and use specific laboratory protocols. Their results support a conditional choice, not a universal ranking of beverage types.
2012 randomized crossover trial
Kalman and colleagues studied 12 exercise-trained men in a randomized, single-blind crossover trial. Each participant completed 60 minutes of dehydrating treadmill exercise, losing about 1.7 kilograms, or approximately 2% of body mass. On separate occasions, they rehydrated with bottled water, pure coconut water, coconut water made from concentrate, or a carbohydrate-electrolyte sports drink.

The researchers found no significant differences among the four beverages in their measured fluid-retention outcomes or in treadmill time to exhaustion afterward. All four beverages therefore supported rehydration and subsequent exercise in that particular protocol. The coconut-water conditions did, however, produce more reports of bloating and stomach upset. Because the sample contained only young, healthy men and the experiment used a laboratory treadmill test, the findings cannot predict every athlete’s response.
2026 comparison after cycling
Bell and Spriet studied eight recreational athletes—seven men and one woman—after 60 minutes of cycling at 70% of measured VO2 max. Participants exercised until they had lost about 1.36% of their initial body mass, then consumed flavored water, coconut water, or a carbohydrate-electrolyte sports beverage in a volume equal to 150% of the measured loss.
Fluid status after rehydration was not statistically different among the three drinks. Flavored water led to greater urine output than either coconut water or the sports beverage, while the authors characterized coconut water as a potentially effective option in their tested conditions. The study describes coconut water as potassium-rich and lower in sodium than the commercial comparison beverage. With only eight participants, this is suggestive evidence rather than a definitive answer for all products, climates, or sports.

2023 cycling performance study
A randomized crossover trial involving 19 experienced cyclists (15 men and four women) compared a commercial sports drink with an isocaloric coconut-water drink during 90 minutes of submaximal cycling followed by a simulated 20-kilometre time trial. The abstract presents the evidence for coconut water as a sports-drink alternative as limited. It should not be read as proof that coconut water improves or matches performance for every sport, athlete, or formulation.
What the potassium evidence means
A separate 2014 post-exercise study reported that adding potassium through fresh coconut water or another potassium-rich drink did not provide an additional rehydration benefit over a conventional sports drink containing sodium. That is one study result, not evidence that potassium is unimportant in every setting. It does show why a drink’s entire electrolyte profile matters more than highlighting a single mineral.
Why the workout changes the answer
Sessions shorter than one hour
The ACSM position stand states: “During exercise lasting less than 1 h, there is little evidence of physiological or physical performance differences between consuming a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink and plain water.” For a typical short, moderate session, you may not need a carbohydrate beverage at all. Coconut water can be chosen for taste or as a post-workout drink, but its presence is not automatically an advantage over water.

Longer or harder exercise
ACSM guidance discusses carbohydrate during intense exercise lasting longer than one hour and sodium during prolonged exercise. Those are fueling and fluid-replacement considerations, not a direct endorsement of any coconut-water product. If a session is long, high-intensity, hot, or unusually sweaty, compare the label’s carbohydrate and sodium with what the session demands. A product with an unspecified or relatively low amount of either nutrient may not serve the same purpose as a formulated sports beverage.

Post-exercise studies are where coconut water has the clearest direct support. In both the 2012 and 2026 trials, measured rehydration outcomes were broadly similar to those of the comparison sports beverage under the researchers’ protocols. That makes coconut water a reasonable recovery option for people who can drink enough of it and tolerate it comfortably. The studies do not establish that one serving always replaces the exact volume or electrolyte losses from your own workout.
Coconut water and sports drinks: the practical differences
| Decision factor | Coconut water | Carbohydrate-electrolyte sports beverage | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Evidence for post-exercise fluid status | No significant disadvantage in the small 2012 and 2026 comparisons under their protocols | Performed similarly in those comparisons | Use the drink you can consume comfortably and in an adequate amount |
| Sodium | May be lower than the comparison sports beverage; the amount varies by product | Formulated to provide a stated electrolyte amount, which also varies by product | Read the sodium line instead of assuming a category-wide value |
| Potassium | Often potassium-rich, according to the 2026 study description | May contain less potassium but can provide sodium | Do not treat high potassium as proof of superior rehydration |
| Carbohydrate | Amount depends on the coconut-water formulation | Usually included at a stated concentration for exercise fueling | Check grams per serving when exercise lasts longer than an hour |
| Stomach comfort | More bloating and stomach upset were reported in the 2012 trial | Was better tolerated than coconut-water conditions in that report | Test either drink in training, not for the first time during competition |
| Product consistency | Pure, concentrate-based, flavored, and blended products can differ | Recipes also differ by product and serving size | Use the label for the exact container you are drinking |
How to choose a drink for your own session
- Classify the session. Note whether it is under or over one hour, easy or intense, and whether heat or heavy sweating is involved. Duration and intensity determine whether carbohydrate and sodium deserve priority over taste alone.
- Decide whether you are replacing fluid during or after exercise. The direct coconut-water trials evaluated rehydration after exercise-induced loss. A drink that feels adequate after a workout may still be inconvenient or nutritionally different during a long event.
- Read the complete label. Record serving size, total carbohydrate, sodium, and potassium. Do not infer a product’s composition from the words “coconut water,” “natural,” or “electrolyte.” The 2026 comparison specifically noted lower sodium in coconut water than in its commercial sports beverage.
- Match carbohydrate to the session. For a short workout, carbohydrate may not add a measurable performance benefit. For intense exercise beyond an hour, ACSM guidance gives carbohydrate a more relevant role, so a low-carbohydrate coconut-water product may not meet that need by itself.
- Check tolerance in training. Start with a normal serving after an ordinary session. If you experience bloating, stomach upset, or simply cannot drink enough because of the taste, choose another option. The 2012 result is a warning to test tolerance, not a prediction that everyone will react the same way.
- Use the same product when precision matters. If you depend on a particular sodium or carbohydrate intake for repeated long sessions, keep the formulation and serving size consistent and recheck the label when the product changes.
Using the study protocols without overgeneralizing them
The 2026 investigators gave each beverage at 150% of measured body-mass loss. That was an experimental protocol designed to compare fluid status; it is not a universal prescription for every reader. Your own fluid loss, access to food, climate, and medical circumstances can differ substantially. Likewise, the 2012 participants lost about 2% of body mass during a controlled treadmill session, while the 2026 participants lost about 1.36% during cycling. Those figures describe the experiments, not a target you should intentionally reach.

Both studies measured outcomes over a short recovery period. They cannot establish how coconut water performs across repeated days of endurance training, very hot environments, team sports, or gastrointestinal conditions that were not represented. Treat their findings as evidence that coconut water can work under comparable circumstances, not as a guarantee of identical replacement for every sweat loss.

Assuming every coconut water is equivalent
Pure coconut water, concentrate-based coconut water, flavored products, and blends may have different carbohydrate and electrolyte profiles. The 2012 trial included both pure and concentrate-based preparations, while the 2026 trial used a specified study product. Neither trial tested every product on the market. Compare the actual nutrition panel each time.

Choosing potassium while ignoring sodium
Coconut water’s potassium content attracts attention, but the 2014 study found no extra rehydration benefit from additional potassium over a sodium-containing sports drink. Prolonged exercise guidance specifically discusses sodium, so a potassium-focused choice may not match the electrolyte emphasis of a long, sweaty session.

Calling a performance study a hydration guarantee
The 2023 cyclist trial used 19 experienced riders, 90 minutes of cycling, and a simulated 20-kilometre time trial. Its limited evidence cannot establish superiority or universal equivalence. Similarly, the 2012 treadmill time-to-exhaustion result is not the same as a race result in every sport.
Ignoring gastrointestinal feedback
A beverage that supplies the intended nutrients but causes bloating is a poor practical choice. Because the small 2012 trial recorded more bloating and stomach upset with coconut-water conditions, include comfort in your decision rather than evaluating hydration on paper alone.
A simple decision guide
- Short, ordinary workout: Water is generally consistent with ACSM’s statement for exercise lasting less than one hour. Coconut water is optional if you prefer it.
- Moderate workout followed by recovery: Coconut water can be reasonable when its label fits your carbohydrate and sodium needs and you tolerate it.
- Long or intense workout: Compare carbohydrate and sodium directly with the session’s demands. A formulated sports beverage may be more predictable; coconut water is not automatically equivalent.
- History of stomach upset with coconut water: Use a different beverage rather than forcing a substitution suggested by category labels.
- Need for exact intake: Choose the product whose serving information lets you reliably track carbohydrate and sodium, and keep the serving size consistent.
What can be concluded—and what cannot
The evidence supports a narrow, useful conclusion: coconut water can rehydrate people after certain exercise protocols about as well as the tested sports beverages. The 2012 and 2026 trials reached that result with only 12 and eight participants, respectively, and with different exercise modes and dehydration levels. The 2023 cycling study adds limited performance evidence but does not broaden the conclusion to all athletes.
