Can ChatGPT predict the conditions needed to synthesize a metal–organic framework (MOF)? A 2023 study by Zhiling Zheng and colleagues describes a workflow that uses ChatGPT to extract synthesis details reported in scientific papers, then feeds the structured data into a machine-learning model to predict experimental crystallization outcomes. It is not evidence that an ordinary ChatGPT conversation can independently produce an optimal, lab-validated recipe.
How the MOF synthesis prediction workflow worked
MOF synthesis procedures are described in scientific papers, often in different formats and writing styles. Zheng and colleagues used prompt engineering—called “ChemPrompt Engineering” in the paper—to guide ChatGPT through text-mining tasks that turn those written reports into structured synthesis information. The authors describe three text-mining processes, each with different trade-offs among labor, speed and accuracy.

The extracted parameters were unified into a dataset. A machine-learning model then used the mined synthesis data to predict experimental crystallization outcomes. The paper also describes a literature-grounded chatbot for answering questions about reactions and synthesis procedures. These are connected parts of a research workflow, but they are distinct tasks: extracting reported information, predicting outcomes and answering questions from literature are not the same as experimentally validating a newly proposed procedure.

For its workflow and evaluations, the authors reported extracting 26,257 distinct synthesis parameters covering approximately 800 MOFs. They reported 90–99% precision, recall and F1 scores for text-mining tasks, and over 87% accuracy for the separate crystallization-outcome prediction model.

These figures are the authors’ reported results for this study, not universal benchmarks for large language models. Text-mining scores do not measure whether a newly suggested synthesis will work, and the outcome-prediction accuracy is not a guarantee of success in a laboratory.
What “predicts synthesis conditions” does—and does not—mean
The title can sound as if ChatGPT itself invents and verifies the conditions for making any MOF. The described work is more specific: ChatGPT helps convert synthesis information already reported in literature into structured data, and a trained model uses that data to predict crystallization outcomes. The chatbot component is grounded in literature for questions about reactions and procedures.

The study does not establish broad experimental validation of newly predicted recipes, reliable performance across all MOF families, or transfer of its reported metrics to current ChatGPT models. A prediction can help researchers assess or prioritize conditions, but the evidence described here does not make it a substitute for checking source papers, evaluating the applicability of a prediction, and conducting experiments.

ChatMOF, published in 2024, is a separate AI system described as predicting and generating MOFs using large language models. It should not be confused with Zheng and colleagues’ 2023 ChatGPT-assisted literature-mining workflow. When comparing MOF AI systems, the key distinctions are whether a tool extracts reported experiments, predicts an outcome, generates a framework, or answers questions; whether its input is experimental literature or generated proposals; and whether evaluation concerns extraction metrics, prediction accuracy or experimental validation.

The abstract describes the approach as using prompt engineering to automate text mining of MOF synthesis conditions from scientific literature with diverse formats and styles.
