ChatGPT can do both, but not for every product. It can find products, compare specifications and prices, explain trade-offs, and link you to retailers. For some eligible products and merchants, an Instant Checkout option lets you review and confirm the order inside ChatGPT. If that option is not shown, you must finish on the retailer’s website.
The merchant remains responsible for payment processing, accepting the order, shipping, returns, refunds, and customer support. Treat ChatGPT’s displayed price, stock, shipping estimate, reviews, and ratings as information to check—not as a guarantee. OpenAI’s shopping guidance and its September 29, 2025 Instant Checkout announcement describe the two flows and their limits.

What ChatGPT can do when you ask it to shop
Shopping requests generally produce one of two experiences:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Product discovery: ChatGPT returns relevant products, details, comparisons, and links to sellers. You can ask for a simple shortlist or a detailed buyer’s guide.
- Conditional in-chat checkout: An eligible offer may display an Instant Checkout control. You can review order, shipping, and payment details and confirm without leaving the conversation.
A product appearing in search does not mean it can be purchased inside ChatGPT. Eligibility is attached to the specific product offer and merchant. If no Instant Checkout control appears, the retailer link is the handoff point.
#1 Best Overall
OpenAI’s examples show the range of requests ChatGPT is designed to handle: “Help me find costumes for my dog,” “best running shoes under $100,” “Find the quietest cordless stick vacuum for a small apartment,” and “Help me choose between these three bikes.” Those can lead to a quick list or to a guided comparison with reasons, trade-offs, and merchant links. Shopping research documentation explains the longer buyer’s-guide format.
Discovery and Instant Checkout compared
| Aspect | Product discovery | Instant Checkout |
|---|---|---|
| Where you pay | On the retailer’s website after you follow its link. | In ChatGPT for an offer that supports Instant Checkout. |
| What ChatGPT provides | Results, product information, comparisons, and retailer links. | The same product context plus an in-chat order review and confirmation flow. |
| Who processes the order | The retailer. | The participating merchant through its existing payment and order systems. |
| Who ships and supports it | The retailer or its fulfillment partners. | The merchant; it handles fulfillment, returns, refunds, and customer support. |
| How you know it is available | A product or retailer link is shown. | The actual offer displays an Instant Checkout or Buy control. |
OpenAI summarized the merchant relationship in its launch announcement: “Orders, payments, and fulfillment are handled by the merchant using their existing systems.” The statement applies to the Instant Checkout model, not to every product result.
How to use ChatGPT for product discovery
1. State the job, budget, and constraints
Start with the outcome you need rather than only a product category. Include a maximum budget, location, size, compatibility requirements, noise or performance limits, delivery deadline, and must-have features. For example: “Find a cordless vacuum under $300 for a 500-square-foot apartment, prioritizing low noise and a removable battery.”
Specific constraints reduce irrelevant listings. If a feature matters more than price, say so; ChatGPT can then explain why a more expensive option may be justified instead of treating the cheapest result as the winner.
2. Ask for a comparison, not just names
Request a table or buyer’s guide that separates measurable specifications from judgments. Ask for each product’s price, seller, availability, warranty information, compatibility, and the reason it fits your requirements. You can also ask ChatGPT to compare three products you already found, identify the decisive trade-off, or suggest what information is still missing.
3. Inspect the merchant links
Open the retailer links for the products you are seriously considering. A result may represent one merchant while the same item is offered elsewhere at a different price. OpenAI says the initial displayed price typically reflects the first merchant listed and may not be the lowest; a product page can show other sellers and prices. The shopping-search help article also warns that price and shipping terms can lag behind merchant updates.
Rank #2
4. Recheck the final basket
Before paying, confirm the exact model, size, color, seller, stock status, taxes, fees, shipping charge, delivery date, return window, and warranty. These details belong to the retailer’s current checkout, not to ChatGPT’s earlier summary.
How Instant Checkout works when an offer qualifies
1. Look for the checkout control on the offer
Only some products and merchants support the feature. An ordinary product card or retailer link is not evidence that in-chat purchase is enabled. Current OpenAI guidance describes Instant Checkout as conditional, while the developer documentation describes availability for approved partners. See the Agentic Checkout specification for the merchant-facing flow.
2. Review the order details in ChatGPT
When the control is present, select the Buy or Instant Checkout option. Review the item, quantity, price, shipping destination, delivery method, taxes, fees, and payment details shown in the checkout session. Correct an error before confirming; do not assume a previous conversational estimate is the final total.
3. Confirm the purchase yourself
ChatGPT does not silently place an order merely because you asked it to find a product. The user must review and confirm the purchase details. The merchant can accept or decline the order, and the checkout session passes the transaction to the merchant’s systems.
4. Follow the merchant for fulfillment and support
After confirmation, the merchant processes payment, prepares and ships the order, and handles order-status questions, cancellations, returns, refunds, warranty claims, and other support. OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce key concepts describe this division of responsibility.

What “buy for me” does—and does not—mean
A natural-language request such as “buy the best option” still leaves important decisions that must be made explicit: the exact product, seller, quantity, delivery address, shipping speed, and spending limit. ChatGPT can narrow the choice and present a checkout, but the confirmation step is yours.
Rank #3
It also does not make ChatGPT the retailer. The merchant controls inventory, order acceptance, payment processing, fulfillment, and customer service. If the package is late or the item is defective, use the merchant’s support and return channels rather than expecting ChatGPT to resolve the order directly.
Availability has changed since the 2025 launch
Launch-era scope
OpenAI’s September 29, 2025 announcement described Instant Checkout for ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro users in the United States, initially including single-item purchases from U.S. Etsy sellers. It said more than one million Shopify merchants were expected to follow. That was a launch snapshot, not a permanent or complete list of countries, plans, merchants, or products. The announcement also reported that more than 700 million people used ChatGPT each week; that figure is attributed to OpenAI in 2025 and is not a current usage estimate. Read the dated announcement.
Product-discovery emphasis in 2026
In its March 24, 2026 update, OpenAI said the initial Instant Checkout version did not provide the flexibility it wanted and that merchants could use their own checkout experiences while OpenAI concentrated on product discovery. The product-discovery announcement, current Help Center guidance, and developer specifications together support a qualified present-day answer: discovery is broadly useful, while in-chat checkout appears only for participating, approved merchants and eligible offers.
OpenAI does not publish a single live matrix covering every country, account plan, merchant, and product. Check the offer in your own ChatGPT session instead of assuming that a feature described in an older announcement is available to you.
Prices, reviews, and shipping require independent checks
Displayed prices can be stale or incomplete
Prices may come from third-party providers. A displayed figure can reflect the first merchant listed rather than the lowest available price, and shipping terms can be delayed when a retailer changes them. Compare the item price and the complete delivered cost at the merchant’s checkout.
Ratings are not verified by OpenAI
OpenAI says it does not verify product reviews and ratings shown in shopping results. Treat star ratings, review counts, and summary language as leads for further checking. Read the retailer’s current review details and look for relevant information such as return rates, sizing complaints, compatibility problems, or warranty exclusions.

Check these details before confirmation
- Exact model number, generation, size, color, quantity, and included accessories.
- Current stock and the seller actually supplying the item.
- Item price plus taxes, service fees, and shipping.
- Estimated delivery date and shipping method.
- Return period, restocking charges, and who pays return shipping.
- Warranty length, geographic coverage, and the party responsible for claims.
- Payment method and the final total shown in the retailer or Instant Checkout screen.
These checks follow OpenAI’s recommendations in its shopping-search guidance and shopping-research guidance.

For a fast shortlist
“Find three air purifiers under $200 for a 300-square-foot bedroom. Prioritize low noise at night, replacement-filter cost, and availability from retailers that deliver to my ZIP code. Show the current seller and link.”
For a buyer’s guide
“Build a buyer’s guide to commuter bikes under $1,200. Compare frame size options, weight, gearing, included equipment, warranty, and the trade-off between each pick. Flag any specification you cannot verify.”
For products you already found
“Compare these three laptops for software development. Use battery life, memory upgradeability, display quality, ports, warranty, and total delivered price. Tell me which requirement each model fails.”
For a final pre-purchase audit
“Before I buy this listed product, give me a checklist of the model, seller, stock, taxes, shipping, delivery date, return policy, warranty, and any details I must verify on the merchant page.”

Common misunderstandings and what to do instead
“If ChatGPT found it, ChatGPT can buy it.”
Not necessarily. Discovery results can exist without Instant Checkout. Look for the control on the specific offer.
“The first price is the best price.”
OpenAI says the first listed merchant may not be the cheapest, and prices or shipping can be delayed. Open the product page, compare sellers, and check the final total.
“ChatGPT guarantees the reviews.”
It does not verify reviews and ratings. Use them as a starting signal and inspect the retailer’s current review information.

The merchant handles fulfillment, returns, refunds, and support. Keep the order confirmation and use the merchant’s stated process.
“The 2025 U.S. launch rules apply everywhere now.”
The launch announcement was time- and location-specific. Current eligibility is conditional and partner-based, so rely on the offer shown in your account rather than an old country or plan list.
A practical decision rule
- Need ideas or a comparison? Ask ChatGPT for discovery or shopping research with explicit constraints.
- Found a candidate? Open the merchant link and verify model, seller, price, stock, shipping, returns, and warranty.
- See Instant Checkout? Review every order detail in the in-chat session and confirm only when the final total and terms are acceptable.
- No checkout control? Complete payment on the retailer’s website and use that merchant for support.
The safest interpretation is simple: ChatGPT is a shopping researcher and comparison assistant for many products, and an in-chat checkout interface for a narrower set of approved, eligible offers. The presence or absence of Instant Checkout on the actual product card determines which experience you get.
