ChatGPT Astra can help create and refine an editable 3D scene, but the documented example is architectural visualization—not proof of production-ready mechanical CAD. In an OpenAI Developers walkthrough published September 4, 2026, Thomas Ricouard used Astra in Codex to build a house scene in Blender, revise its contents and lighting, and explore an earlier version in Unreal Engine 5. The “cat-approved” framing is playful: the account documents no cat testing or approving the design.
What Astra actually did in the documented 3D workflow
Ricouard described the starting point as a short brief for a house. He asked Astra in Codex to turn it into an editable Blender scene, then iterated on the house, furniture, materials, and lighting before creating a camera tour. As he put it, “I asked Astra in Codex to turn that brief into an editable 3D scene in Blender.”

The project also included an earlier walkthrough in Unreal Engine 5. To move the approved Blender scene into that environment, Astra wrote an export-and-import pipeline. It exported evaluated geometry as FBX and a JSON scene description containing component placement, materials, lights, and cameras. This demonstrates a digital scene workflow with iteration and transfer between applications; it does not establish that the resulting geometry meets mechanical engineering requirements.

Does that count as CAD?
It depends on what you mean by CAD. If you mean computer-aided design in the broad sense of creating and editing a digital 3D model, the Blender scene is relevant. If you mean a mechanical part ready to manufacture, with validated dimensions, tolerances, loads, materials, and safety, the walkthrough does not demonstrate that.
The distinction is between an editable representation and an engineered, verified object. A scene may look convincing and remain editable without being suitable for fabrication. The official example supports describing Astra as an assistant for 3D visualization and iterative design, not as proof that it can independently deliver a safe or manufacturable part.

What the BenchCAD score can—and cannot—tell you
OpenAI’s model page reports a 95.9% BenchCAD score for GPT-6 Astra in 2026, compared with 83.3% for GPT-5.6 Sol in 2026. These are company-reported benchmark results. They are not the odds that a particular design generated for you will be correct, and the reported scores do not certify a model’s manufacturability, tolerance compliance, structural adequacy, or safety.
OpenAI also reports results on broader computer-use and professional-work evaluations. Those evaluations should not be treated as evidence that a generated design will work in the physical world. The available account of the Blender project does not show validation against engineering standards, manufacturing constraints, loads, tolerances, or safety requirements.

A practical way to try the visualization workflow
The following steps adapt the documented example; they are not a tested, universal recipe. Treat generated geometry and scripts as drafts, and arrange appropriate human or engineering review before relying on them for real-world fabrication.

- Define the goal and constraints. Describe the kind of scene you want, the objects it should contain, and relevant visual or spatial constraints. State whether you want a presentation scene, an architectural concept, or a model intended for a later engineering process.
- Ask for an editable scene. Specify Blender and ask for an editable result rather than only a rendered image. Make clear which parts should be easy to revise.
- Review the scene in Blender. Inspect the geometry and arrangement yourself. A polished image is not a substitute for checking the editable scene.
- Request focused revisions. Give specific corrections to furniture, materials, lighting, or other scene elements, then inspect each revised version.
- Transfer it only if another environment helps. The documented project used an export/import pipeline to explore an earlier version in Unreal Engine 5, including FBX geometry and a JSON description of scene elements. That is evidence of one project’s transfer workflow, not a guarantee every project will move cleanly between tools.
Access depends on your plan and workspace
OpenAI’s Help Center says Plus plans include Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Availability on other listed plans, workspace permissions, and rollout can affect access. Astra usage draws on Work and Codex allowances; the Help Center also notes that usage may be faster than GPT-5.6 Sol depending on task size, reasoning level, and speed setting. For Codex CLI, the page specifies version 0.153.0 or newer and recommends using an up-to-date desktop app. Because these details can change, check the live help page for your account before planning a project around a particular allowance or interface.

OpenAI distinguishes Chat for quick help, Work for longer research and finished deliverables, and Codex for software development and technical work. In the desktop app, Work may use local files and desktop applications when the plan and workspace settings allow it.

Why a digital model still needs physical validation
A separate example illustrates the same gap between a generated design and a proven build. Tom’s Hardware reported on October 4, 2026, that the open-source LDraw Nova tool uses language models, including Astra, to produce LEGO CAD files. The report said the showcased models had not been physically built and that the project lacked physics modeling for stability. It is a separate project, not evidence about the physical performance of Ricouard’s Blender scene.
