Yes, both ChatGPT and Claude can use live web information, retain selected conversation context, and call tools—but none of those capabilities is universal or automatic. Access depends on the product surface, subscription or API setup, country, device, workspace policy, usage limits, and privacy controls. Web search is different from access to your personal browser, and memory is selective rather than a complete record of everything you have said.
The practical question is not simply which assistant “has internet” or “has memory.” It is which version you are using, what evidence it can retrieve, what context it can carry forward, and which tools you or an administrator have enabled.

ChatGPT can search the web to answer questions with current information and links to relevant sources. When search is enabled for your account and the question benefits from up-to-date facts, the response can be grounded in pages retrieved during that interaction rather than only in the model’s training data.

Search is useful for changing information such as news, software releases, schedules, regulations, product documentation, and current prices. It does not make every answer automatically current: if search is unavailable, disabled, limited by a workspace, or not triggered for a particular prompt, the response may rely on the model’s existing knowledge. You should look for the search or source indicators in the conversation and open the linked pages for important decisions.
Availability is conditional
OpenAI documents web search across supported ChatGPT plans and apps, while noting that plan limits, workspace administrators, platform differences, and regional rollout can affect access. Two people asking the same question can therefore see different behavior because they are on different plans, devices, or managed workspaces.
A cloud browser is not your personal browser
ChatGPT can perform tasks in a cloud-browser environment when that workflow is offered. The cloud browser does not use your personal browser tabs, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, extensions, or existing sign-ins. You must treat it as a separate session and provide any authentication or information the task legitimately requires through the supported workflow.

This boundary matters for privacy and expectations. Saying “ChatGPT can browse” means it can retrieve public web content or operate in an isolated cloud session when enabled—not that it can silently inspect everything open on your computer.

Consumer web search
Anthropic’s consumer documentation says Claude can invoke a search tool when a question benefits from current information and use live-web content to inform and ground its response. In supported conversations, web search may also return images. As with any retrieval system, the answer is only as reliable as the pages found, the interpretation of those pages, and the citations or links presented for checking.

API and hosted deployments
Anthropic’s platform documentation describes web search as a server tool for the Claude API and supported hosted deployments. In an API application, a developer decides whether to expose that tool, how to handle the returned results, and how to present citations. A model call without the configured search tool cannot independently fetch live pages merely because the underlying model is capable of reasoning about them.
What “live” does not guarantee
Live search improves freshness; it does not guarantee that every page is accessible, authoritative, complete, or free of errors. Paywalled pages, robots restrictions, regional differences, rapidly changing pages, and conflicting reports can all affect the result. For high-stakes work, inspect the cited material and compare primary sources rather than treating a generated summary as the source itself.
What “memory” means in ChatGPT
Selective memory, not a complete transcript
ChatGPT memory can include relevant saved memories, information retrieved from past chats, custom instructions, files stored in Library, and content from connected apps when those features are available. The system is selective: OpenAI explicitly says that ChatGPT does not retain every detail from every conversation.
That design means a later answer may use a preference, project detail, or recurring instruction without reproducing the entire earlier conversation. It also means you should restate a critical fact when accuracy depends on the exact wording, latest version, or a detail that may not have been saved.
You can manage the scope
Memory settings vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Depending on the account, you can review saved memories, correct them, delete individual items, clear memory, or turn the feature off. Connected-app access and Library files have their own permissions and should be reviewed separately; allowing an app to be searched is not the same as granting the assistant unrestricted access to every account action.

Memory is different from web search
Web search retrieves information from the internet for the current task. Memory supplies context from your relationship with the assistant or from sources you have connected. A response can use one, both, or neither. A current web page does not become a permanent personal memory simply because it appeared in a search result.
What “memory” means in Claude
Consumer memory and chat search
Anthropic documents memory and chat-search features for Claude on the web, Claude Desktop, and Claude Mobile. These features can help Claude find or apply relevant context from earlier conversations instead of requiring you to paste the entire history into a new chat. Anthropic also documents controls to disable memory for a chat and citations that link back to referenced conversations, giving you a way to inspect where remembered context came from.
Chat search is retrieval from prior conversations, not a guarantee that every sentence ever written is always available to the model. Results can depend on the account, the conversation surface, indexing, and your settings. For sensitive or temporary work, use the available memory controls to keep that chat from contributing to future context.
The developer memory tool is a separate mechanism
For developers, Anthropic provides a platform memory tool that an application configures and invokes through the standard tool-use loop. The application—not an invisible universal memory—decides what information to store, when to retrieve it, and how to apply it. A Claude API integration without that tool or an equivalent application-managed store will not automatically remember a user’s previous API calls.

ChatGPT connected apps
ChatGPT can use connected apps to search and reference information in third-party services. The useful distinction is between retrieval and action: an app may expose searchable content, while a different integration may support operations such as creating or updating records. The exact abilities depend on the app’s permissions, the connection you approved, and workspace policy.

Before connecting a service, check which data it can expose, whether administrators can restrict it, and how to revoke access. If a response cites an app source, verify that the referenced record is the one you intended to make available.
ChatGPT cloud-browser tasks
A cloud-browser workflow can navigate websites in an isolated environment. It should not be confused with an extension that sees your ordinary browser. Personal tabs, history, cookies, saved passwords, extensions, and existing sign-ins are outside that cloud browser unless you explicitly complete an approved sign-in or transfer step within the workflow.
Claude tools through an application
Claude can work with tools when the surrounding product or API supplies them. In the API, tools are declared and configured by the developer; Claude can then request a tool call, receive the tool’s result, and continue generating an answer. The application controls authentication, allowed operations, data handling, and whether a tool call is executed at all.
This architecture supports functions such as web search, retrieval from a private knowledge base, calculations, or actions in another system. It also creates an important boundary: Claude cannot call a private database, browser, or business system that the application has not connected and authorized.

Feature names alone do not tell you what an account can do. Check these conditions before relying on a capability:
- Plan and usage limits: Search, memory, apps, and advanced workflows may be restricted by subscription or quotas.
- Region and platform: A feature can appear on the web but not yet on a particular mobile app, desktop build, or country.
- Workspace policy: An employer or school administrator may disable search, memory, connected apps, or external tool calls.
- User toggles: Turning memory or search off changes what the assistant can use in that chat.
- Data boundaries: Connected content is limited to the permissions granted; cloud-browser tasks are not your normal browser session.
- API configuration: A model endpoint does not gain web or memory access unless the developer supplies and authorizes those tools.
For confidential work, minimize the information you connect, avoid granting broad permissions when a narrow scope is available, and remove stored memories or app connections you no longer need. A citation or remembered detail is not proof that a provider has unrestricted access to your account; it is evidence that a particular source was available to that interaction.
How to verify what your account can actually use
- Identify the surface. Note whether you are using ChatGPT or Claude on the web, a mobile app, a desktop app, a managed workspace, or an API integration. Capabilities can differ between these surfaces.
- Test current information. Ask for a fact that changed recently and request sources. Confirm that the response shows a search indicator or links to pages retrieved for the answer. If no sources appear, do not assume live browsing occurred.
- Inspect memory controls. Open the product’s settings and review whether memory, chat history retrieval, or temporary-chat controls are enabled. Look for options to view, correct, delete, or disable remembered information.
- Review connected apps. Check the list of linked services and the permissions each connection grants. Disconnect integrations that are no longer necessary.
- Check browser isolation. For a cloud-browser task, assume it starts without your personal tabs, cookies, passwords, or sign-ins unless the interface explicitly guides you through a supported handoff.
- For APIs, inspect the tool declaration. Confirm that web search, retrieval, memory, or action tools are configured by the application and that the application actually executes returned tool calls.
Which one has better memory and web access?
There is no single winner independent of account and workflow. Compare the dimensions that matter to your task:

For a personal user, choose the service whose available search, memory, and app controls match your privacy preferences and daily tasks. For a developer, evaluate the tool APIs and permission model rather than assuming that the consumer app’s features are included in an API call.

“The answer sounds outdated.”
Ask explicitly for a web search and request links, then check whether search is available on your plan, platform, and workspace. If the response still has no current sources, verify the information independently.
“It forgot something I told it.”
Memory is selective. Restate the needed detail, check memory or chat-search settings, and save or pin only information you are comfortable retaining. Do not assume that a long conversation automatically becomes a permanent profile.
“The API says it can use tools, but nothing happens.”
Confirm that the application declared the tool, handled the model’s tool-call response, executed the function, returned the result, and allowed the conversation to continue. Tool support in documentation does not execute a tool unless the integration is configured.
“It accessed my private browser.”
Cloud-browser tasks are isolated from personal tabs, history, passwords, cookies, extensions, and existing sign-ins. If a workflow needs an authenticated site, use the explicit sign-in or handoff mechanism supplied by the product and review the data that will be shared.
