It can process a secret when you paste or upload it, when a connected app or tool is authorized to retrieve it, or when an agent workflow exposes it through a browser, filesystem, API, retrieval index, or URL request. Treat every prompt, upload, connector, and tool call as a deliberate data-transfer boundary.
How a chatbot gets access to private data
A language model has no ambient access to your computer, password manager, browser profile, or cloud storage. The model receives only the text, files, images, and tool results made available to the conversation. Access usually enters through one of three paths.

You submit the data
Pasting a password, recovery code, session cookie, API key, configuration file, log, or spreadsheet sends that content to the service handling the conversation. Uploading a document has the same basic implication: the service can process the document under the product’s retention, access, and administrative policies. Masking a few characters does not make a reusable credential safe if the remaining value can be reconstructed or if surrounding context reveals how it is used.
A connector or app retrieves it
A storage connector, email integration, browser session, code repository, or enterprise search index can return content that the signed-in user is allowed to access. The chatbot does not gain more rights than the connector grants, but a connector with broad permissions can expose a large amount of information in response to an ordinary question. Source permissions should still apply, yet permission mistakes, stale indexes, shared links, and third-party processing remain possible failure points.

An agent uses tools
An agent may be able to browse pages, read a local directory, call an API, run code, or request a URL. In that design, the model decides which tool to invoke and receives the result. The security boundary is therefore the entire workflow: model instructions, tool permissions, network routes, returned data, logs, and approval rules. A model that cannot read a file directly may still obtain its contents if an authorized tool reads it on the model’s behalf.
Can ChatGPT read my passwords?
It cannot read passwords that remain in your password manager or on your device simply because you are using the chat service. The important distinction is between a supported sign-in form and a password typed into the conversation.
OpenAI documents a supported sign-in pattern in which the credential is entered into a secure browser form and sent to the browser environment without exposing it to the model. OpenAI’s own limitation is explicit: These protections apply to supported sign-in flows. They don’t cover passwords you share separately in a chat or document, or through a plugin.

A one-time code may expire quickly, but it can still be used by an attacker during its validity window.

Safer authentication patterns
- Use a brokered login or an authorization page that keeps the credential in the browser’s secure form.
- Grant the narrowest scope needed for the task and set an expiration where the service supports it.
- Never ask a general-purpose chat to store or repeat a reusable password.
- Require a human confirmation before an agent changes a password, adds a recovery method, or alters account permissions.
Is it safe to paste an API key into a chatbot?
No. Treat a pasted API key as compromised, even if the conversation is private or the key is used only for testing. NIST’s agent-identity guidance warns that Bearer tokens and static API keys do not prove identity.
Anyone who obtains such a credential can call the associated API until the key is revoked, expires, or is blocked. NIST also notes that credentials commonly remain in configuration files, markdown files, and logs, where they can be copied or indexed unintentionally.
Configuration guidance for model-connected systems recommends keeping reusable API keys, cloud credentials, passwords, and service-account tokens out of prompts, repositories, shared filesystems, and model-accessible logs. A separate secrets manager or credential broker should issue a short-lived token scoped to the exact target and action. The model can request an operation, while the broker decides whether to provide a temporary credential.
What to use instead of a long-lived key
- Short lifetime: expire the credential after minutes or after one operation rather than leaving it valid indefinitely.
- Narrow scope: permit only the required API, resource, method, and environment.
- Brokered issuance: keep the root secret in a vault and let a gateway exchange an approved request for a temporary credential.
- Auditing: record who requested access, which tool used it, what resource was touched, and whether the request was denied.
Environment variables are not a complete solution. An agent, plugin, debugging trace, crash report, or process inspection tool may still expose them. Keep secrets out of model-visible output and redact them before logs or retrieval indexes are created.
Can an AI chatbot see files on my computer?
Not merely because the files exist. A file becomes available only after you upload it, expose it through a local tool or browser session, synchronize it to a connected service, or place it in a retrieval system the chatbot can query. A desktop agent with filesystem permission can see the paths and contents that its operating-system account permits; a cloud chatbot without such a connector cannot.

Connected drives and collaboration systems
For Google Drive, SharePoint, and similar systems, access follows the connector’s account and permission model. If the connector indexes a shared folder, the index must enforce the requesting user’s permissions at query time, not merely when the document was first ingested. Removing a user’s access should also remove or block access to previously indexed content.
Enterprise guidance calls for permission-aware vector and embedding storage, tenant segregation, restricted network access, encryption, and audit monitoring. These controls reduce accidental disclosure but do not make an overprivileged connector safe. Review which folders are indexed, which administrators can inspect content, how long copies are retained, and whether a third-party provider receives the retrieved text.
Local files and browser sessions
A local agent may read browser downloads, source trees, notes, or mounted network shares if its tool permission allows it. Browser automation can also inherit cookies and logged-in sessions. Give such tools a dedicated browser profile, a minimal filesystem directory, and a separate operating-system account when practical. Do not combine personal banking, corporate administration, and experimental agent access in one session.
Can prompt injection steal private data?
Yes. Prompt injection is an instruction hidden in a webpage, document, email, or other external content that tries to redirect an agent. The content may tell the agent to ignore its original task, search for secrets, or send data to an attacker-controlled destination.

OpenAI describes a URL-exfiltration scenario in which hostile page content induces an agent to request a URL containing private information. The warning is direct: If a model is induced to load that URL, an attacker can read the value in their logs.
The attacker does not need to break encryption; the secret is deliberately placed in an outbound request that the attacker controls.
Controls that reduce the risk
- Treat all external pages, documents, emails, and search results as untrusted data, not as higher-priority instructions.
- Separate system instructions from retrieved content and clearly label the latter as data.
- Show the exact destination, parameters, and data leaving the system before a sensitive request is sent.
- Block cloud metadata services, credential endpoints, private address ranges, and unapproved domains from agent network access.
- Limit tools to the minimum operations and files required for the task.
- Require explicit approval for payments, password changes, permission changes, data exports, and other irreversible actions.
- Log tool calls, retrieval events, destination domains, denials, and unusual outbound volume for review.
These measures lower the probability and impact of exfiltration; they cannot guarantee perfect prevention when an agent has broad permissions and an attacker can influence its inputs.

Encryption in transit protects data while it moves between systems, and encryption at rest protects stored copies. Neither control makes a secret safe after you intentionally submit it to a service or authorize a tool to retrieve it. Authorized administrators, connected providers, retention systems, application logs, and attackers exploiting an overprivileged integration may still be able to access the plaintext at some stage.

Providers may offer account-security controls, retention choices, audit logs, customer-managed keys, or data-residency settings. Microsoft states that signed-in Copilot Chat for work or school provides enterprise data protection and does not use prompts and responses to train foundation models; it also says chat data is encrypted in transit and that prompts, Bing queries, and responses are logged. Such statements describe a particular product and plan. They do not authorize users to paste production credentials into a chat.

A practical security checklist
- Keep reusable secrets out of model input. Do not paste passwords, recovery codes, session cookies, private keys, API keys, cloud credentials, or service-account tokens into prompts, uploads, repositories, shared drives, or model-accessible logs.
- Put credentials in a vault or broker. Let the system issue short-lived, narrowly scoped tokens for one target and action.
- Apply least privilege at every layer. Review user accounts, connectors, retrieval indexes, tools, filesystem paths, and network destinations separately.
- Constrain egress. Deny metadata and credential endpoints, private network ranges, and unapproved domains unless a documented task requires them.
- Separate tenants and identities. Enforce authorization when a query runs, not only when content is indexed, and prevent one workspace from retrieving another’s records.
- Use approval gates. Require a person to confirm password changes, payments, permission changes, bulk downloads, and external data transmission.
- Monitor behavior. Alert on unexpected retrievals, repeated denials, unusual URL requests, large exports, and attempts to access secrets.
- Rotate exposed credentials. Revoke and replace any credential that was pasted, uploaded, logged, indexed, or retrieved unexpectedly.
What to compare when choosing an AI product or agent
Marketing labels such as “private” or “enterprise” are not enough. Ask for written, product-specific answers to these questions.
| Security area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Training and retention | Are prompts, files, and tool results used for training? What are the default and configurable retention periods? |
| Encryption and keys | Is data encrypted in transit and at rest? Can the customer control or rotate encryption keys? |
| Connector permissions | Does every retrieval enforce the source system’s current user and document permissions? |
| Tenant isolation | How are indexes, embeddings, caches, and backups separated between customers? |
| Audit detail | Can administrators see prompts, retrievals, tool calls, destinations, approvals, and denials? |
| Tool and network controls | Can you restrict filesystem paths, APIs, domains, IP ranges, metadata services, and outbound methods? |
| Prompt-injection defenses | How are untrusted instructions labeled, filtered, tested, and isolated from system instructions? |
| Human approval | Can sensitive actions pause for a named reviewer before execution? |
| Residency and administration | Where is data processed and stored, and which provider or customer administrators can access it? |
Recheck these answers when a product, plan, connector, or region changes. Controls are not transferable from one edition to another.
What to do if you already shared a secret
- Revoke or rotate it immediately. Replace the password, API key, token, cookie, or service-account credential at its issuing system; do not wait for proof of misuse.
- Invalidate active sessions. Sign out other sessions and regenerate recovery codes if an authentication secret was exposed.
- Inspect logs. Look for unexpected API calls, outbound requests, downloads, permission changes, and retrievals during the exposure window.
- Remove copies. Delete the conversation, upload, repository commit, shared document, cache, and log entry where your controls permit, while recognizing that provider backups or administrator records may persist.
- Restrict the workflow. Disable the connector or tool until its permissions, network routes, retention, and approval gates have been reviewed.
- Document the incident. Record what was exposed, when, to which service, and which rotations and investigations were completed.
The safest default is simple: let the chatbot handle instructions and transformed data, while a vault or broker handles credentials. Give an agent only the files, permissions, network access, and time window it needs for one well-defined task.
