Can Cats Give Humans Toxoplasmosis? How It Spreads and Who Is at Risk

Yes, cats can be a source of human toxoplasmosis, but simply living with, touching, or being near a cat does not usually transmit it. Infection occurs when a person accidentally swallows the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, often after handling cat feces or contaminated soil and then touching their mouth. Contaminated food and water are also important routes. Most people with healthy immune systems have no symptoms or only a mild illness. A first infection during or just before pregnancy, and infection or reactivation in someone with a weakened immune system, can be much more serious.

What toxoplasmosis is and how cats fit in

Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by the microscopic parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Cats and other members of the cat family are the parasite’s definitive hosts: after a cat becomes infected, it can shed parasite eggs, called oocysts, in its feces. Those oocysts can contaminate litter, garden soil, sand, food, or water.

A person becomes infected by accidentally ingesting the parasite. The usual chain is indirect: contaminated material gets on hands, produce, kitchen surfaces, or food, and the person then swallows it. You do not get toxoplasmosis merely by petting a cat, sharing a home, or having a cat walk across your lap. Intact skin is not a typical entry route.

CDC explains that people can acquire toxoplasmosis in several ways. Cat feces are one route, not an explanation for every infection. Undercooked meat, contaminated shellfish or produce, and unsafe water can expose people who have never handled a litter box.

The infection is widespread. A CDC page updated in 2025 estimates that approximately 11% of people in the United States aged six years and older have had a Toxoplasma infection. The same page notes that research finds infection rates above 60% in some populations worldwide. CDC’s About page also gives a rounded estimate of more than 40 million infected people in the United States. These figures describe broad populations; they do not predict the risk posed by a particular cat, litter box, or household.

How transmission from cat feces happens

Infected cats can shed oocysts in feces, including in a litter box or outdoors. A newly shed oocyst is not immediately infectious. CDC states that it generally takes one to five days after shedding for the parasite to become infectious. That delay is why daily litter removal is a meaningful precaution.

Exposure setting How swallowing the parasite can occur Practical prevention
Litter box Cleaning contaminated litter, failing to wash hands, and then eating, drinking, or touching the mouth Have another person clean it when possible; otherwise use disposable gloves and wash with soap and water afterward. Remove waste daily.
Outdoor soil or sand Handling soil contaminated by cat feces and then eating, or swallowing soil on unwashed garden produce Wear gloves for gardening, wash hands, rinse produce under running water, and cover children’s sandboxes.
Food preparation Eating undercooked meat or shellfish, or allowing contaminated juices and utensils to contact ready-to-eat food Cook food to a safe internal temperature, use a food thermometer, and clean hands, boards, knives, and counters.
Water Drinking water contaminated with the parasite Avoid untreated water and follow local public-health advice when water quality is uncertain.

Outdoor cats may contaminate soil or water as well as their own litter. A person can therefore encounter the parasite while gardening, handling sand, or eating unwashed produce even without owning a cat.

Other routes that matter

Foodborne infection is a major reason not to attribute every case to a household cat. The parasite’s tissue form can be present in undercooked meat. Contaminated shellfish and unwashed fruits or vegetables can also carry it. Cross-contamination matters: a cutting board or utensil that touched raw meat can transfer the parasite to salad or other food eaten without cooking.

Person-to-person spread is not typical. Important exceptions are congenital transmission from a pregnant person to a fetus and rare transmission through blood transfusion or organ transplantation. Casual contact, kissing, and sharing household objects are not standard routes.

Who faces the greatest danger?

Pregnancy and the developing fetus

If someone is infected for the first time during pregnancy or shortly before becoming pregnant, the parasite can cross the placenta and infect the fetus. The pregnant person may have no symptoms, so feeling well does not rule out infection. An infected infant may also appear healthy at birth yet develop problems later. CDC notes that congenital infection can lead to serious eye or brain damage in some babies.

The chance and severity of fetal effects vary with timing and individual circumstances. Anyone who is pregnant, planning pregnancy, or concerned about a possible exposure should discuss the situation promptly with an obstetric or other healthcare professional rather than trying to estimate risk from cat ownership alone.

People with weakened immune systems

Immunocompromised people can develop severe disease after a new infection or experience reactivation of an infection that had remained inactive. CDC specifically identifies people with HIV, people receiving certain chemotherapy, and people who recently had an organ transplant as examples of higher-risk groups. The exact risk depends on the person’s immune status, previous infection, medicines, and transplant history.

Severe disease can involve the brain or other organs. Warning symptoms can include headache, confusion, poor coordination, nausea or vomiting, fever, and seizures. These symptoms require urgent medical evaluation, especially in someone known to be immunocompromised.

People with healthy immune systems

Most people with healthy immune systems have no symptoms. When illness occurs, it may resemble a mild flu: swollen or tender lymph nodes, muscle aches, and other pains. Symptoms can last weeks or months. After the initial infection, the parasite can remain inactive in the body and reactivate if immune defenses later become impaired.

Safer cat care during pregnancy or immune suppression

Higher-risk people do not automatically need to give up a cat. The goal is to reduce contact with feces and prevent hand-to-mouth transfer.

  1. Delegate litter duty. Ask someone else to clean the litter box whenever possible.
  2. Use barriers if you must clean it. Wear disposable gloves, avoid touching your face, and wash hands thoroughly with soap and water immediately afterward. Gloves support the precaution but do not replace handwashing.
  3. Clean daily. Because oocysts usually need one to five days to become infectious, daily removal reduces the time they can mature in the box.
  4. Keep cats indoors. Indoor living reduces hunting and the chance that a cat eats infected prey.
  5. Feed prepared food. Give commercial dry or canned food rather than raw or undercooked meat.
  6. Be cautious with new or stray cats. CDC’s higher-risk guidance advises against adopting or handling stray cats, particularly kittens, and against getting a new cat while pregnant or immunocompromised.

These measures address feces exposure. They do not eliminate foodborne or environmental routes, so kitchen and gardening precautions remain important.

Preventing infection from soil, food, and water

Gardening and outdoor activities

Wear gloves when handling garden soil, potting mix, outdoor sand, or areas that could have been contaminated by cat feces. Wash hands with soap and water after removing gloves. Rinse fruits and vegetables under running water before cutting or eating them; washing helps remove soil and surface contamination but does not make spoiled or damaged produce safe.

Keep children’s sandboxes covered when not in use. Do not assume that an apparently clean patch of soil is uncontaminated, because oocysts can be too small to see.

Cooking and kitchen hygiene

Cook meat to a safe internal temperature and check it with a food thermometer. CDC’s prevention material cites the USDA minimum of 145°F (63°C) for whole cuts other than poultry; follow current local food-safety guidance for poultry, ground meat, and other products because required temperatures differ. Prevent raw-meat juices from touching salads, fruit, bread, or cooked food. Wash hands, utensils, cutting boards, and counters after handling raw meat or shellfish.

Water safety

Drink treated water. Avoid untreated water when hiking, traveling, or living in an area where contamination is possible, and follow local advisories after floods or other water-quality events.

Symptoms, testing, and when to seek care

Symptoms alone cannot establish toxoplasmosis because mild infection can look like many other illnesses and many infections cause no symptoms. A healthcare professional may consider the exposure history, pregnancy status, immune condition, examination, and laboratory testing. Do not start or stop medication based solely on owning a cat or on a symptom search.

Contact a healthcare professional about a possible exposure if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, immunocompromised, or developing symptoms after a plausible exposure. Seek urgent care for confusion, seizures, marked loss of coordination, severe headache, or repeated vomiting, particularly if your immune system is weakened.

Tell the clinician what happened and when: for example, whether you cleaned litter, handled soil, ate undercooked meat, drank untreated water, or had a possible food-contamination event. The timing can matter because the parasite is not infectious immediately after being shed and because testing and follow-up are individualized.

Common misunderstandings

  • “I touched a cat, so I am infected.” Touching or living with a cat is not the same as swallowing Toxoplasma. The concern is contaminated feces, soil, food, or water reaching the mouth.
  • “Every infection comes from a litter box.” Undercooked food, contaminated produce, shellfish, and water are also recognized routes.
  • “A healthy-looking pregnant person cannot pass it to a baby.” The pregnant person may have no symptoms, so medical advice is appropriate after a credible exposure.
  • “Gloves make handwashing unnecessary.” Gloves can reduce contact, but hands still need washing after litter or soil work.
  • “Old litter is harmless.” Oocysts become infectious after they have been shed, often within one to five days; leaving litter unchanged gives them time to mature.

A practical risk-reduction checklist

  • Arrange for someone else to clean litter during pregnancy or immune suppression.
  • If you must do it, wear disposable gloves, remove litter daily, and wash hands with soap and water.
  • Keep cats indoors and feed commercial food, not raw meat.
  • Use gloves for gardening and cover sandboxes.
  • Wash produce under running water and avoid untreated water.
  • Cook meat safely and prevent raw-food cross-contamination.
  • Ask a healthcare professional for individualized guidance after a concerning exposure or if you are in a higher-risk group.

The central distinction is exposure, not proximity: cats can contribute to transmission when their feces contaminate material that is swallowed, while food, soil, and water can independently carry the same parasite. Most healthy people remain well, but pregnancy and immune suppression change the consequences enough that precautions and timely medical advice matter.
