Multipoint lets them stay connected to a phone and laptop at once, but normally plays audio from only one device at a time. It makes switching between sources easier; it does not combine the phone’s and laptop’s audio.
What connecting “at the same time” means
With multipoint, the headphones maintain Bluetooth connections to two source devices. You can have a phone and laptop connected, then switch which one supplies the sound. To switch sources, Google’s general guidance is to stop audio on the first device and start it on the second. The exact response—switching, pausing, or applying a priority rule—depends on the headphone model.

Multipoint is not the same as hearing two separate audio streams mixed together. Bose says its QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) play audio from only one connected device at a time. Check your model’s manual for its specific playback and switching behavior.
Check whether your headphones support multipoint
Bluetooth support alone does not mean headphones can maintain two device connections. Look in the manual or the manufacturer’s support page for “multipoint” or wording such as “connect to 2 devices simultaneously.” Sony recommends checking the product-specific support information, and JBL’s compatibility list includes the Tune 770NC.
#1 Best Overall
- HYBRID ANC FOR EVERYDAY DISTRACTIONS: Reduce steady background sounds such as airplane cabin noise, traffic rumble, HVAC systems, and household appliances, so it is easier to focus on music, work, and daily entertainment. Switch to Transparency Mode when you need to hear announcements or your surroundings

Physical buttons make it easy to control volume, music, calls, ANC, and sound modes without relying on complicated touch controls
For example, Bose documents connections to up to two devices at once for its QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), with playback limited to one device at a time. These are examples of documented features, not a hands-on product recommendation; check the exact model and regional listing before buying.
Pair your phone and laptop
- Turn on Bluetooth on both the phone and laptop.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and pair the headphones.
- Open the laptop’s Bluetooth settings and pair the same headphones. If the manufacturer requires a multipoint option or companion-app setting, enable it using the instructions for your model.
- Check Bluetooth settings on both devices to confirm the headphones show as connected.
Menu names and steps vary by operating system and headphone model. Google’s instructions for the procedure it describes require pairing both desired sources; Sony’s phone-and-computer guidance also starts by pairing with each source.

What to expect when audio or a call starts
Connected does not mean both devices will play through the headphones at once. Starting audio on the second device may prompt a source change or pause, depending on the model. Calls can also take priority: Google says calls and video calls take precedence over media for the Pixel Buds models covered by its guidance. Do not assume other headphones behave the same way.
If the laptop is connected but you hear no sound
- Confirm the headphones are selected as the laptop’s sound output device. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking the computer’s speaker-output selection.
- Check that the headphones still show as connected in the laptop’s Bluetooth settings.
- Check whether audio is playing on the phone or whether a call or another activity has changed which source is active. The switching behavior depends on the headphone model.
- Consult the headphone manual for any multipoint toggle, app setup, or model-specific connection limit.
What to compare before buying
- Whether the exact model supports multipoint with two devices connected simultaneously.
- How it handles switching between media, calls, and video calls.
- Whether setup requires enabling a setting in a companion app.
- Any model-specific limits or instructions in the manufacturer’s documentation.
For current examples and instructions, see Google’s Android multipoint guidance, Sony’s phone-and-computer pairing guidance, JBL’s multipoint compatibility list, Bose’s QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) guidance, and Google’s Pixel Buds guidance on multipoint and Audio Switch.
