The results cover several PFAS types, but they are laboratory findings—not evidence that this process is commercially deployed or scaled up.
What the ball-milling study found
Yang and coauthors’ 2025 paper, “Phosphate-enabled mechanochemical PFAS destruction for fluoride reuse,” describes a solvent-free method that mills PFAS together with potassium phosphate salts. The authors report breaking carbon–fluorine bonds and capturing the fluorine in inorganic products, particularly potassium fluoride (KF) and potassium fluorophosphate (K2PO3F).

The paper includes fluoropolymers and smaller-molecule PFAS: polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS). The practical significance is recovery of fluorine-containing chemicals that the authors demonstrate can serve in fluorination chemistry—not conversion of PFAS waste into a ready-made retail product.
How the phosphate-enabled process works
Ball milling supplies mechanical energy while the potassium phosphate reagent participates in the reaction and captures fluorine. The result is not evidence that milling PFAS alone produces the same outcome: the reported approach depends on the co-milled phosphate salt and the experimental conditions.

PTFE example and measured products
In one PTFE experiment, the researchers milled PTFE with K3PO4 at 35 Hz for 3 hours in a steel jar sealed with a rubber ring. They dissolved the water-soluble material and analyzed it with 19F NMR. The reported signals indicated fluoride and PO3F2−; the authors describe near-quantitative fluorine recovery for this particular example. That result is specific to the reported laboratory conditions, not a general guarantee for other PFAS feedstocks or equipment.
The phosphate salt changes the product mix
For the described PTFE experiments, K3PO4 produced predominantly fluoride with some fluorophosphate, whereas K4P2O7 produced predominantly fluorophosphate. The paper also reports that recovered K2PO3F can be converted into KF or tetraalkylammonium fluorides. Product distribution therefore depends in part on which phosphate reagent is used.

What “industrially useful” means here
The authors connect the recovered compounds to fluorination chemistry, where fluoride reagents can be used to introduce fluorine into other chemical products. In that sense, the work explores reuse of fluorine recovered from PFAS rather than simply treating it as a contaminant to be destroyed.
That chemical utility should not be confused with an established industrial supply chain. The study demonstrates laboratory chemistry and a reuse pathway; the available evidence does not establish commercial operation, economic viability, or scale-up of this phosphate-enabled process.

What the result does—and does not—show
- It shows: the authors report defluorination and recovery of inorganic fluorine products from multiple PFAS classes using ball milling with potassium phosphate salts.
- It does not show: that a general-purpose mill, milling without phosphate, or any arbitrary set of operating conditions will reproduce the reported outcomes.
- It does not establish: commercial deployment or scale-up of this exact fluoride-reuse method.
How this differs from other PFAS milling studies
Ball milling is used in distinct research approaches, but they should not be treated as the same process. A 2024 Science of the Total Environment study examined PFAS-contaminated soil using a 267 L horizontal ball mill and included potassium hydroxide co-milling in reported tests. Its soil-remediation setup and pathway do not demonstrate scale-up of the phosphate-enabled fluoride-reuse method.
A separate 2025 Environmental Science & Technology Letters study reported additive-free stainless-steel ball milling for PFAS adsorbed on granular activated carbon. That is another distinct approach, not the method described in the 2025 Nature paper.

When comparing claims about PFAS milling, check the material being treated, any co-milling reagent, the mill and operating scale, how defluorination was measured, which fluoride products were recovered, and whether scale-up was actually tested.
