Yes. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reports that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded there is sufficient evidence that asbestos causes ovarian cancer. That population-level finding does not mean that every person exposed to asbestos will develop ovarian cancer, and it does not calculate an individual’s risk.
What the asbestos–ovarian cancer link means
Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals. When asbestos-containing products are disturbed, tiny fibers can be released into the air. Exposure can occur at work, in a community, or at home. The NCI’s “Asbestos Exposure and Cancer Risk Fact Sheet,” reviewed May 20, 2021, summarizes IARC’s conclusion that the evidence is sufficient to identify asbestos as a cause of ovarian cancer. The evaluation it cites is IARC Monographs volume 100C, Arsenic, Metals, Fibres and Dusts (2012).

“Sufficient evidence” is a conclusion about whether an exposure can cause a disease across populations. It is not a prediction that a particular person will get cancer after any exposure, nor does it establish how likely that outcome is for one individual.

Why risk can differ between people
The NCI says asbestos-related disease risk generally rises with heavier and longer exposure, but circumstances vary. Factors it identifies include:

- Your sample takes 1–5 business days to reach our lab.
- Estimated amount and duration of exposure
- Where the asbestos came from and the setting in which exposure occurred
- Fiber size, shape, and composition, when known
- Individual considerations such as smoking, pre-existing lung disease, and some genetic factors
These are considerations for understanding exposure, not a formula for calculating ovarian-cancer risk. The NCI notes that most people who become ill from asbestos have had regular workplace exposure or substantial environmental contact. That context does not establish that a smaller or shorter exposure was harmless.
Ovarian cancer is not peritoneal mesothelioma
Both diseases can involve the abdomen, but they are not interchangeable diagnoses. Ovarian cancer arises in ovarian tissue. Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, the tissue lining certain internal surfaces; when it develops in the abdominal lining, it is called peritoneal mesothelioma. The NCI explains the distinction in its ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancer prevention information and its “What Is Mesothelioma?” page, updated May 16, 2025.

Because the diseases are distinct, an abdominal location alone does not identify which cancer is present. A clinician must assess a suspected diagnosis using the relevant medical evaluation.
What the evidence does not tell an individual
The NCI sources reviewed do not provide an ovarian-cancer-specific statistic for estimating an exposed individual’s probability of developing the disease. The IARC conclusion establishes the causal link at the population level; it does not quantify personal risk. The material also does not establish an asbestos-specific ovarian-cancer screening test or a consumer product that can diagnose or prevent this cancer.

If you are concerned about a past exposure, discuss when and where it occurred, how long it lasted, and what is known about the material with a healthcare professional. If you have symptoms or a health concern, seek medical advice rather than relying on exposure history alone to diagnose the cause.
