Can Arm-based PCs run your Windows apps and games?

Yes—most Windows apps run on a current Windows 11 Arm PC, but not every app, game, driver or peripheral is guaranteed to work. Arm64 applications run directly on the processor. Many traditional x86 and x64 Windows programs run through emulation, including on Windows 11 version 24H2 with Microsoft’s Prism emulator. The important exceptions are software that requires a kernel-level or hardware-specific driver, and games whose anti-cheat systems do not support Windows on Arm.

Compatibility is therefore a per-program, per-game and per-device question. Check the publisher’s support statement and the hardware maker’s driver page for your exact version before you replace an existing PC or depend on an Arm laptop for work or competitive gaming.

What “Windows on Arm” means

An Arm-based PC uses an Arm processor rather than the x86 processors traditionally found in Windows desktops and laptops. Windows 11 has an Arm64 build that runs directly on that processor. Software compiled specifically for Arm64 is native code: Windows can execute it without translating processor instructions.

Most of the Windows software ecosystem was originally compiled for x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) processors. Windows 11 on Arm can translate much of that code while it runs. This compatibility layer is why an Arm PC can install and launch many familiar Windows applications even when the developer has not released an Arm64 edition.

Microsoft states in its Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ: “Yes, you can install and run most Windows apps on Windows 11 Arm-based PCs just as you would on other Windows 11 PCs.” “Most” is deliberate: an application can still fail because of a driver, an installer component, a plug-in, a hardware check or an unsupported system requirement.

Native Arm64 apps versus emulated apps

Arm64 software: the preferred path

An Arm64 build is designed for the processor in the PC. It normally gives the developer the best route to performance, battery efficiency and predictable behavior. Microsoft recommends native Arm64 versions where they are available. A program may include both an Arm64 build and older x86 or x64 builds; choose the Arm64 package when the publisher offers one.

Native status does not automatically make an application compatible with every workflow. A native application can still depend on an unavailable plug-in, a service or a peripheral driver, so check those dependencies separately.

x86 and x64 software: translation at run time

Windows emulates many x86 applications and, on supported Windows 11 releases, x64 applications. Microsoft’s Surface guidance describes x86 Win32 applications as commonly supported through emulation and x64 emulation as generally available in Windows 11. The translated program can work normally, but its behavior and speed depend on the application, the workload and the PC.

Emulation is not a universal conversion service. It cannot supply a driver that the developer has not built for Arm Windows, and it cannot bypass an installer or licensing system that rejects the platform. An application may launch but lose a feature that depends on a low-level component. Treat a successful installation as a useful sign, not proof that every function will work.

What Prism changes in Windows 11 24H2

Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Microsoft’s Prism emulator for emulated applications. Prism is intended to improve the execution of x86 and x64 software on Arm PCs. It does not turn an x86 or x64 application into native Arm64 code, and it does not remove the need for compatible drivers. The exact result still depends on the program’s build and system requirements.

Which Windows applications are most likely to work?

Applications that stay in user-mode code and use standard Windows interfaces have the best chance of running, whether they are native Arm64 or emulated x86/x64. Traditional desktop programs can often be installed and used in this way. A publisher-provided Arm64 build is preferable when available; otherwise, test the current x86 or x64 release on the exact Windows 11 Arm configuration you plan to use.

Be more cautious with software that inserts components into Windows, controls hardware, or creates a virtual machine. Microsoft identifies several categories in which drivers commonly matter:

  • Antivirus and antimalware products that install file-system or network filters.
  • Printing and PDF software that supplies a virtual printer or a device-specific driver.
  • Assistive technologies that connect deeply to Windows or specialized hardware.
  • CD/DVD utilities that require low-level access to an optical drive.
  • Virtualization software that needs a hypervisor or other kernel components.

For these products, an emulated application executable is only one part of the package. The publisher must provide Arm64 drivers, or the required driver must already be included with Windows.

Why drivers determine more than app emulation

A driver is code that lets Windows communicate with hardware or provide a privileged system function. Windows cannot safely emulate every driver in the same way it emulates ordinary application instructions. A program may therefore install and open while a connected device, filter, virtual adapter or protected feature remains unavailable.

Printers, scanners and other peripherals

Peripherals work through a built-in Windows driver or an Arm64 driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer. Before buying or connecting a device, open the manufacturer’s support page and look for Windows 11 Arm support or an Arm64 driver for the exact model. A generic Windows driver may provide basic printing or input while omitting scanning, status monitoring, buttons or other vendor features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security, backup and virtualization tools

Security suites, backup agents and virtualization products often install services or kernel drivers. Do not assume that an x64 installer will be sufficient simply because the main user interface opens. Confirm that the publisher supports Windows 11 on Arm and identify any feature limitations in its documentation.

Can Arm PCs run Windows games?

Many games can start through x86 or x64 emulation, but gaming has an extra compatibility gate: anti-cheat software. Microsoft warns that some games and apps do not work when they rely on anti-cheat drivers that were not made for Windows 11 Arm-based PCs. A game can therefore have a compatible graphics engine yet refuse to launch because its protection driver is unsupported.

Check anti-cheat support before buying

Use the game publisher’s current support page or player-support channel for the exact game and Windows 11 Arm. Look for an explicit statement about Arm support rather than relying on reports for a different game in the same series. Anti-cheat components can change between updates, so an older compatibility report is not a permanent guarantee.

Expect variable performance from emulated games

Whether a game launches says nothing about its frame rate, input latency or battery life. Emulation adds processor work, and the game may also require a particular graphics API, feature level, memory amount or launcher component. The available sources do not establish a universal performance figure or a percentage of games that work. Evaluate the title you actually play, using its publisher requirements and current Arm compatibility information.

A practical compatibility check before you rely on an Arm PC

  1. List every essential component. Include the main application, plug-ins, fonts, launchers, sign-in tools, printers, scanners, security software, VPN or network adapters, and any game anti-cheat module. Compatibility of the main executable does not cover these extras.
  2. Identify the exact Windows and software versions. Record whether the PC runs Windows 11 and whether it is on version 24H2. Note the application edition, plug-in version and hardware model; support can differ between releases.
  3. Look for a native Arm64 build. Prefer the publisher’s Arm64 installer or Microsoft Store package when offered. If none exists, verify that the publisher supports its x86 or x64 build on Windows 11 Arm.
  4. Read the publisher’s limitations. Search the official support documentation for “Windows on Arm,” “Windows 11 Arm,” “Arm64,” driver requirements and unsupported features. For a game, search specifically for the title’s anti-cheat and launcher support.
  5. Verify every peripheral driver. On the manufacturer’s site, confirm an Arm64 driver or a statement that Windows includes the required driver for your model. Check each accessory separately; a supported printer does not prove that its scanner or card reader is supported.
  6. Use Works on WoA as an additional signal. Microsoft points to the third-party Works on WoA database, an evolving crowdsourced compatibility resource to which Microsoft contributes data. Treat a listing as a useful lead, not a guarantee for your hardware, software version or workload.
  7. Test before migrating. If the application is business-critical, install the evaluation or current release on the intended PC, exercise the features you use, connect the real peripherals and run a normal workday before retiring your old system.

How to compare an Arm PC with an x86 Windows PC

The useful comparison is not a blanket “compatible” label. It is whether the Arm machine meets the requirements of your particular software stack.

Question What to verify on an Arm PC Why it matters
Essential applications Arm64 build, or confirmed x86/x64 support under Windows 11 Arm Native code avoids emulation; emulated code may have feature or performance differences.
Drivers and utilities Arm64 driver or built-in Windows driver for every required component Emulation does not replace kernel, filter or hardware drivers.
Games Publisher confirmation for the exact title, launcher and anti-cheat system Unsupported anti-cheat drivers can block launch even when the game itself is emulatable.
Peripherals Manufacturer support for the exact model and Windows 11 Arm Basic functions may work while scanning, monitoring or special buttons do not.
Future updates Publisher and hardware-maker commitment to current Windows 11 Arm releases An update can add, remove or change compatibility.

An x86 Windows PC remains the lower-risk choice when your work depends on several proprietary drivers, older hardware utilities, specialized virtualization, or a large library of competitive games with strict anti-cheat requirements. An Arm PC is a reasonable option when your essential software is native Arm64 or confirmed to work through emulation, and your peripherals have explicit support.

Troubleshooting an app or game that fails

The installer will not run

Check whether the publisher offers an Arm64 installer and whether the download is intended for Windows rather than another operating system. If the package includes a driver or service, read the publisher’s Arm support notes; changing from an x64 installer to an Arm64 one may be necessary.

The app opens but a feature is missing

Identify the feature’s dependency: printer, scanner, virtual adapter, plug-in, security filter or other hardware component. Confirm that dependency has an Arm64 or built-in Windows driver. Report the exact Windows version, application version and device model to the publisher instead of treating the problem as a general emulation failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A game refuses to launch

Check the game publisher’s current Arm statement and the anti-cheat component’s requirements. Install Windows updates and the publisher’s current game build, but do not disable security protections to force a launch. If the anti-cheat driver is not designed for Windows 11 Arm, only the publisher can provide a supported fix.

A peripheral is detected but does not work fully

Remove generic or obsolete driver packages, then install the manufacturer’s Arm64 package if one exists. If no Arm64 driver is published, ask the manufacturer which functions are supported by Windows’ built-in driver and whether a replacement model is required.

What to expect from future compatibility

Windows on Arm compatibility is changing as publishers release Arm64 builds, update emulation behavior and add Arm-compatible drivers. The reverse is also possible: a software update can introduce a new driver or protection component that has not yet been ported. Recheck the publisher and hardware-maker documentation after major application, game or Windows updates rather than relying indefinitely on an old test.

Microsoft’s official guidance does not provide a single percentage for how many Windows applications or games work, and there is no comprehensive official game-by-game matrix. A specific confirmation for your program, game and peripheral is more meaningful than a broad compatibility statistic.

Bottom line for buyers and users

Current Windows 11 Arm PCs can run most Windows applications, using native Arm64 code where available and emulation for many x86 and x64 programs. Windows 11 24H2’s Prism emulator improves the emulated-app path, but it cannot solve unsupported drivers. Treat anti-cheat systems, specialized utilities and peripherals as the main risk areas. Verify those dependencies with the publisher or hardware maker, use Works on WoA as a crowdsourced secondary check, and test essential workflows before making an Arm PC your only computer.
