Short answer: Apple Podcasts documents two separate search actions. The main Search experience is for discovering podcasts by categories, show names, topics and similar catalog information. Once you open an episode that has a transcript, you can search that transcript for a word or phrase. Apple does not publicly document whether transcript text is also included in its global catalog-search index, so do not assume that typing a spoken phrase into the main Search field will find every episode that contains it.
Apple Podcasts has catalog search and transcript search
The distinction matters because the two searches happen in different places and serve different purposes.

| Workflow | What Apple documents it searching | Where you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog search | Categories, show names, topics and other podcast-discovery information | The main Search experience |
| Episode transcript search | A word or phrase contained in the transcript of one available episode | Inside that episode’s opened transcript |
Apple’s Mac user guide explains catalog search in discovery terms: search for categories, show names and topics, then follow a show or play an episode from the results. The guide does not list transcript wording as a catalog-search field. That omission is not the same as an official statement that transcript text is never indexed globally. Apple has not documented enough about its search implementation to support that stronger claim.
For a phrase you know was spoken in a particular episode, the dependable documented route is therefore: find or open the episode, open its transcript, and use the transcript’s Search control.

How to search an episode transcript on iPhone or iPad
Transcript search is available only when Apple Podcasts displays a transcript for the episode. The wording of the controls can vary slightly with the current iOS or iPadOS release, but Apple’s support instructions follow this sequence:
- Open Apple Podcasts and select the episode you want to inspect.
- Open the episode’s transcript view. If no transcript is available, there will be no transcript text to search.
- Tap Search.
- Enter the word or phrase you are looking for.
- Tap a matching result to jump to that part of the transcript. Apple says the selected text can take you directly to the corresponding section of the episode.
This is a search within one episode’s text, not a second global catalog. If you need to search another episode, return to that episode and repeat the process.
What the result lets you do
Apple describes transcripts as readable episode text that can be searched for a specific word or phrase. Selecting matching text takes you to that point in playback, which is useful for checking the surrounding context or resuming from the passage you found. Search results depend on the words Apple has in that transcript; a phrase that was misheard by the transcription system, spoken over music or represented with different punctuation may not match exactly.

How to search a transcript on Mac
On Mac, Apple calls the control Search Transcript. Use the following workflow:
- Open the Podcasts app and select an episode while browsing or searching the catalog.
- Open the episode’s transcript.
- Choose Search Transcript in the transcript view.
- Type the word or phrase.
- Select a match to move to that location in the episode.
The Mac documentation makes an important sequencing point: catalog browsing or catalog search can lead you to an episode, after which you can open and search its transcript. That sequence should not be read as confirmation that the original catalog query searched the transcript itself.

Does the main Apple Podcasts Search field search spoken words?
Apple’s public instructions do not answer that question conclusively. They describe the main Search experience as a way to find podcasts through categories, show names, topics and related discovery information. They separately describe searching for a word or phrase inside an opened episode transcript.
Accordingly, the most accurate answer is:
- Yes: Apple Podcasts lets you search the text of an episode transcript when that transcript is available.
- Not established: Apple’s documentation does not say that every transcript is indexed by the global catalog-search field.
- Practical advice: If you need an exact spoken phrase, use catalog search to locate a likely show or episode, then use Search or Search Transcript inside the episode.
This wording avoids claiming that Apple has definitively restricted global search to titles and descriptions. It states only what Apple’s documented workflows establish.
What to do when you cannot find a phrase
A failed catalog search does not prove that the phrase is absent from every episode. Work through the following checks instead.
1. Identify the likely episode first
Search by the show name, episode title, topic, category or other catalog information. If you know the approximate publication date, use the show’s episode list to narrow the candidates. Open each likely episode and look for a transcript.
2. Check for a transcript control
If the episode has no transcript view, there is nothing in Apple Podcasts that you can search within that episode. The absence may reflect processing time, language or region support, audio conditions, the creator’s distribution setup or an episode-specific setting.

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
3. Try wording variants
Transcript search works on the text Apple has produced or received. Try a distinctive single word, a shorter part of the phrase, alternate spelling or the likely form of a name. Spoken numbers, contractions, punctuation and proper nouns may be transcribed differently from the way you remember hearing them.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →4. Allow processing time for a new episode
Apple says transcripts are generated after a new episode is published and may require processing. Its creator troubleshooting guidance advises checking again after at least 24 hours when a transcript has not appeared. That waiting period is particularly relevant to newly released episodes.
5. Consider audio conditions
Apple identifies audio quality, cross-talk and loud music as factors that can affect transcript availability or quality. Multiple people speaking at once, heavy background sound and unclear recordings can produce missing or inaccurate text even when a transcript is present.
Transcript availability is not universal
A transcript search can work only for episodes for which Apple Podcasts has a transcript. Apple Podcasts for Creators says transcripts may be automatically generated, supplied by the creator through RSS transcript tags or uploaded for subscriber episodes in Apple Podcasts Connect. These routes do not make every episode searchable.
Supported languages
Apple’s current creator guidance lists these supported transcript languages:

Language support can change. Apple says transcripts are accessible in more than 170 countries and regions, but availability still depends on the applicable language and regional conditions. A show or episode available in one market may not expose the same transcript features everywhere.
Private RSS and subscriber episodes
Apple says private RSS episodes that are not distributed in the Apple Podcasts catalog do not display transcripts there. Subscriber episodes can use transcript uploads in Apple Podcasts Connect, but the creator must provide them through that supported setup. A private feed or a subscription arrangement therefore does not automatically make its spoken content searchable in the public catalog.
Very long episodes
Apple says episodes longer than 10 hours may not be transcribed. For a recording beyond that length, the lack of a transcript may be a documented limitation rather than a temporary indexing delay.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How transcripts are created and why wording may differ
For newly published episodes, Apple describes automatic transcript generation with a processing delay. Creators can also provide their own transcript through RSS transcript tags, and subscriber episodes can use uploads in Apple Podcasts Connect. The source of the text affects what you see, but none of these options guarantees that every spoken phrase will be represented perfectly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA transcript is an aid for reading and locating a passage, not a word-for-word guarantee of the audio in every case. Search may miss a phrase because of a spelling difference, an omitted word, a name rendered phonetically, overlapping speakers or background noise. When the exact wording matters, play the audio around the matched passage and verify it against the recording.

A reliable workflow for finding something said in a podcast
Use this decision path when your goal is to locate spoken content rather than simply discover a show:
- Start with catalog clues. Search the show name, subject, guest, category or episode title in the main Search experience.
- Open the most likely episode. Do not treat a failed phrase search in the catalog as proof that no episode contains the phrase.
- Look for the transcript. If it is missing, check the episode’s age, language, region and distribution type.
- Search inside the transcript. Use Search on iPhone or iPad, or Search Transcript on Mac.
- Broaden the query. Try a shorter or differently spelled term if the remembered phrase produces no match.
- Verify the audio. Select the matching text and listen from that point to confirm the exact wording and context.
This approach matches Apple’s documented separation between discovery and in-episode text search while accounting for transcript availability limits.
What changed when Apple introduced transcripts
Apple announced transcripts for Apple Podcasts on March 5, 2024. The announcement described the feature as allowing users to read a full episode, search for a specific word or phrase and tap the text to play from that point. It also said back-catalog episodes would be transcribed over time. The launch announcement initially referred to four languages; Apple’s current creator guidance now lists eleven, so the current support guidance is the better reference for present-day availability.

In that announcement, Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s senior director of Global Accessibility Policy & Initiatives, said: “Introducing transcripts on Apple Podcasts builds on Apple’s commitment to making products and services for everyone.” The feature’s accessibility purpose does not change the distinction between searching an individual transcript and searching the overall catalog.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for common questions
- Can Apple Podcasts search transcripts? Yes, inside an opened episode transcript that Apple Podcasts makes available.
- Can you type a spoken phrase into the main Search field and find every matching episode? Apple does not document that behavior, so it should not be assumed.
- How do you search on iPhone or iPad? Open the transcript and tap Search.
- How do you search on Mac? Open the transcript and choose Search Transcript.
- Why might search fail? The episode may lack a transcript because it is still processing, falls outside supported language or regional availability, uses a private RSS setup, exceeds 10 hours, or has audio conditions that hinder transcription.
