Can Android Shortcuts Automate Actions Without Opening an App?

Yes, but only within Android’s supported shortcut and automation systems. An app can expose a shortcut to a particular screen or function, which you reach by long-pressing its icon. For multi-step tasks, a Google Home Routine can combine supported actions and run from a Home-screen shortcut or an automatic trigger. Assistant and Gemini can handle selected device actions, including some from the lock screen, but they cannot silently perform every action in every app.

What works depends on the app, Android version, phone manufacturer, Google account settings, language and country, connected devices, and whether the phone is locked. The practical distinction is whether you need a direct route into one app feature or a sequence of supported actions.

What an Android shortcut actually does

An Android app shortcut is a menu supplied by the app itself. Touch and hold the app’s icon on the Home screen and Android displays any shortcuts that the developer has provided. A shortcut might open a particular conversation, compose a new item, start a search, or jump to another frequently used destination.

This is faster than opening the app and navigating through its menus, but it is not a universal automation command. The app decides which shortcuts exist, and Android cannot invent one for an app that does not provide it. Some shortcuts take you directly to a feature while still starting the app’s process; “without opening an app” therefore means you do not have to open and navigate it manually, not that the app can never run in the background.

For a sequence such as turning off lights, changing a thermostat and announcing a reminder, use a Google Home Routine instead. Routines can combine several supported actions and be started by a shortcut, voice command, time or device event.

Three ways to automate an action

Route What it can do How you start it Lock-screen and setup considerations
App-provided shortcut Open one destination or action that the app exposes Long-press an app icon, then tap the shortcut; optionally pin it to Home Support is app-specific. The destination may require an unlocked phone or app sign-in.
Google Home Routine Run several supported Assistant, media, reminder or smart-home actions Home-screen Routine shortcut, voice command, schedule, presence or compatible device event Requires Google Home configuration. Availability varies by Routine type, device, account, country and language.
Assistant or Gemini device assistance Perform selected device settings and quick actions Voice or configured assistant interaction, including some lock-screen requests Requires the relevant assistant settings and permissions. It is not arbitrary app automation.

There is no single feature matrix that applies to every Android phone. Manufacturers can change menus, and an app update can add or remove shortcuts. Treat the following procedures as the standard Google-documented routes, then check the labels on your device.

Use an app’s own shortcut

Check whether the app supplies shortcuts

  1. Go to the Home screen.
  2. Touch and hold the app icon. On Android versions that support the feature, a shortcut list appears when the app supplies one.
  3. Tap a shortcut to use it immediately, or continue to the next step to pin it.

Google documents this behavior in Android Help’s guide to adding apps, shortcuts and widgets. If holding the icon only shows options such as app info or uninstall, that app has not exposed a launcher shortcut on your phone.

Pin a shortcut to the Home screen

  1. Touch and hold the app icon.
  2. Touch and hold the specific shortcut in the pop-up list.
  3. Drag it to an empty area of the Home screen and release.

The resulting icon is a direct entry point. You can move it like another Home-screen icon, place it in a folder, or remove it without uninstalling the underlying app.

  • NO 3RD PARTY APPS OR HUBS REQUIRED: Set up and manage connected devices directly in the Alexa app; no need for additional smart hubs or 3rd party apps

Understand the limits

  • The app developer controls the shortcut names, destinations and availability.
  • A shortcut normally represents one destination or operation, not a chain of unrelated commands.
  • Some destinations require an account, network connection, subscription or authentication before they can complete.
  • A shortcut does not guarantee lock-screen access. Android may ask you to unlock before showing private content or allowing a sensitive action.
  • Android 14 and newer include some steps that differ from older releases, so a phone maker’s launcher may present a slightly different drag-and-drop interaction.

Build a Google Home Routine for several actions

A Routine is the better fit when one trigger should cause multiple supported actions. Google Home distinguishes between personal and household Routines. Personal Routines can use individual information such as calendar events; household Routines are intended for shared home automation and cannot provide one member’s private calendar or reminders.

Create a personal Routine

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Open Routines, choose New, and select Personal.
  3. Add at least one starter. A starter is the event that begins the Routine.
  4. Add at least one action, such as a device adjustment, media command, reminder, communication action or supported Assistant command.
  5. Save the Routine and test it with a harmless action before relying on it.

Google’s current instructions and the separate household-Routine workflow are described in Google Assistant Help. The exact choices shown in the editor depend on your home, account and connected devices.

Choose a starter

Documented starters include a spoken command, a time of day, sunrise or sunset, dismissing an alarm in supported setups, an event from a connected device, presence sensing, and tapping Play in Google Home. A time or sunrise/sunset starter may require a home address. A device-event starter requires a compatible device and a working connection to Google Home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automatic starters and manual play are different: a scheduled or device-based starter can run without a Home-screen tap, while a manual Routine shortcut waits for you to tap it. Not every starter can be combined with every action.

Add actions

Depending on the Routine, actions can adjust compatible lights, plugs, switches or thermostats; control media; provide information or reminders; handle supported communication; and issue Assistant commands. A smart plug is useful only if it is compatible with your Google Home setup and already linked to the correct home. No new hardware is required for a Routine that uses only software or devices you already own.

Some actions are intentionally restricted. Personal data, authentication, safety rules and manufacturer limitations can prevent an action from appearing or running. Google specifically does not offer an unlock action because it would weaken device security.

Add a Routine shortcut to the Home screen

  1. In Google Home, open the Routine you created.
  2. Select the option to create a Home screen shortcut.
  3. Follow the on-screen steps to place the shortcut.
  4. Tap the new icon to run the Routine.

The shortcut starts the Routine; it does not turn every action into an invisible background process. A device may respond immediately, while an Assistant command may take time to interpret or may ask for confirmation.

Do not use a Routine as a safety system

Google states: “Routines are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical use cases.” Do not rely on one for emergency unlocking, medical monitoring, intrusion protection, or any task where a missed or delayed action could cause harm. Connected-device outages, account problems, power loss and network delays can all prevent a Routine from completing.

Can these automations run while the phone is locked?

Lock-screen behavior is deliberately narrower than Home-screen behavior. Google Assistant can respond to selected requests and, when enabled, provide certain personal results from the lock screen. In Google Home’s Lock screen settings, turn on Assistant responses and configure personal results as appropriate. Voice Match may be required for personal information, depending on how Assistant is activated.

Google says you must unlock the phone to open other apps or access Google Photos from a lock-screen Assistant request. That means a shortcut or assistant command cannot be used as a general method for bypassing the lock screen. Even when a response is available while locked, an app may still require authentication before revealing private data or completing a sensitive transaction.

Routines triggered by a schedule, presence event or connected device can run through Google’s services without you tapping an app icon, but their supported actions and account permissions still apply. A Home-screen Routine shortcut generally requires the normal device interaction needed to start it.

Use Gemini for selected device actions

Google’s Android Device assistance documentation describes Gemini’s device-assistant capabilities for selected settings and quick actions. The Google app hosts Gemini and its digital-assistant functions on Android. To use the documented device controls, the Google app must be set as the phone’s default digital assistant; the setting’s location varies by manufacturer and Android version.

With the required configuration, examples include toggling Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Flashlight and Do Not Disturb; changing volume; taking a photo or screenshot; and powering off. Notification reading or replying requires notification access. These are defined device actions, not a permission to automate any app or tap arbitrary controls on your behalf.

Before enabling notification access or personal results, consider whether the convenience justifies exposing message content to the assistant. Review the permission screen, limit access you do not need, and test commands while the phone is unlocked so you can see exactly what Gemini does.

Which route should you choose?

  • Use an app shortcut when you repeat one destination, such as composing a message or opening a specific section, and the app offers that shortcut.
  • Use a personal Routine when one trigger should perform several supported actions or use personal information such as calendar data.
  • Use a household Routine for shared home devices and shared scenarios where individual calendar or reminder data is not required.
  • Use a scheduled or device-event starter when the task should happen automatically rather than after a tap or spoken command.
  • Use Assistant or Gemini device assistance for the limited settings and quick actions they document, not for unrestricted third-party app control.

If your goal is simply fewer taps, start with the app icon’s long-press menu. If the menu has no suitable shortcut, check whether the task can be represented as supported Google Home actions. If neither route exposes the operation, Android’s built-in tools do not provide a guaranteed way to automate it invisibly.

Troubleshoot a shortcut or Routine that does not work

No shortcut appears

  • Confirm that you are long-pressing the actual app icon, not a widget or folder.
  • Update the app and Android, then check again; shortcut support is controlled by the app and can change between versions.
  • Try the phone maker’s default launcher if a third-party launcher is hiding or rearranging shortcut menus.

The Routine is missing an action

  • Check whether you created a personal or household Routine; the two types expose different personal-data capabilities.
  • Verify that the connected device is linked to the correct Google Home and is online.
  • Review country, language, home-address and account settings. Google does not make every starter-action combination available everywhere.
  • Remove restricted commands involving authentication, unlocking or sensitive personal data and test a simpler action.

The Routine runs but a device does not respond

  • Test the device directly in Google Home to separate a Routine problem from a device or network problem.
  • Check that the device has power and that its manufacturer integration is still linked.
  • Use a harmless manual test before depending on a scheduled or presence-based trigger.

A lock-screen request is refused

Unlock the phone for requests that open another app, reveal private content or need authentication. Recheck Assistant responses, personal-results and Voice Match settings if a supported lock-screen response should be available. For Gemini, confirm that the Google app is the default digital assistant and that any required notification permission is enabled.

Privacy and reliability checklist

  • Give an app or assistant only the permissions needed for the shortcut or Routine.
  • Avoid putting private messages, account changes or security-sensitive commands into a Routine that other household members can trigger.
  • Keep a manual fallback for lights, locks, heating and other devices that matter when the internet or a cloud service is unavailable.
  • Test after changing phones, Google accounts, homes, languages or connected-device integrations; those changes can alter available starters and actions.
  • Remember that a shortcut reduces navigation, while a Routine adds automation but also adds dependencies on Google Home, Assistant services and connected hardware.

Android shortcuts can therefore automate actions without requiring you to open an app and navigate it yourself, but only inside the boundaries set by the app, Google Home, Assistant, Gemini and your device’s security model. A direct app shortcut is the simplest option; a Routine is the flexible multi-action option; lock-screen and device-assistant features remain deliberately limited.
