Android 16 can show three apps at once on some tablets and external-display setups, but Google has not introduced a universal, fixed three-way split-screen mode. The documented change is desktop windowing: several movable, resizable app windows on one desktop, similar to a computer. Whether three apps are practical depends on the device, available screen area, input method and how each app handles resizing.
What Android 16 actually adds
Google describes Android 16 desktop windowing as the ability to “open, move and resize multiple app windows in a single screen, just like a desktop.” This is separate from Android’s traditional split screen, which Google’s multi-window guidance still defines as two apps displayed side by side or stacked.
Desktop windowing can work alongside full-screen and split-screen states. You can therefore have three visible apps by opening separate windows and arranging them on a large display, but Android does not promise a standard three-column layout with three equal panes on every device.
Three apps versus three-way split screen

The important distinction is that “three apps at once” describes the result, while “three-way split screen” describes a specific fixed layout that Google has not documented as a universal Android 16 feature.

Which devices can use desktop windowing?
Google positions desktop windowing for compatible large-screen devices. That includes supported tablets and some phones or foldables connected to an external monitor. A connected display can start its own desktop session, and certain tablet-plus-monitor configurations can extend the session across both screens.
Availability is device- and configuration-dependent. Google explicitly warns that desktop windowing is not available on all devices and that the experience may vary. Android Developers names the Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 as an example of a tablet with desktop-windowing support; that example should not be treated as a guarantee for every Galaxy Tab model or regional software build.
Large-screen dimensions matter. Android Developers documents a Large width class of 1200–1600dp and an Extra-large class of at least 1600dp. Those categories describe available window width, not a promise that a particular tablet will make three apps comfortable to use. A landscape tablet or external monitor generally offers more workable room than a phone in portrait orientation.

How to arrange three windows
The exact labels can vary by manufacturer, but Google’s documented interaction follows this pattern:

- Start with an app in full-screen or ordinary split-screen mode.
- Drag the app’s top handle downward to enter desktop windowing.
- Open additional apps; they appear as separate windows while desktop windowing is active.
- Drag a window’s header bar to move it.
- Drag a window edge or corner to resize it.
- Use the taskbar to minimize and restore windows, or switch between full-screen, split-screen and desktop states.
- With a keyboard, use the documented window shortcuts and Alt+Tab to change focus.
To make three apps visible, resize each window until all three fit without covering controls you need. There is no universal “three-way split” button that automatically creates three equal panes.
What determines whether three apps are usable?
Screen area and orientation
Three windows need substantially more width than two. On a small tablet, each app may become too narrow for toolbars, documents or on-screen keyboards. Landscape orientation and an external monitor usually provide a better arrangement.

App resizability
Android 16 overrides some orientation, aspect-ratio and resizability restrictions to improve flexible layouts. That improves the odds that an app can participate in a desktop arrangement, but it does not guarantee a polished result. An app designed only for a narrow phone layout may scale awkwardly or show compatibility treatments.
Input hardware
Touch works, but a keyboard and mouse or trackpad make overlapping windows, text entry and rapid app switching far easier. A connected-display desktop session is especially suited to pointer and keyboard input.

Multi-instance support
Some apps can open more than one instance, which can be useful for comparing documents or accounts. Multi-instance behavior is an app capability, not a universal Android 16 guarantee.

What happens with incompatible apps?
Developers are expected to design for changing window sizes and display densities. Apps that lock their orientation or are marked non-resizable can receive compatibility scaling or other treatments when placed in flexible windows. The app may still open, but controls can be oversized, letterboxed or difficult to use in a narrow third of the screen.
Android 16’s windowing improvements therefore expand what the system can arrange; they do not rewrite an app’s interface. Test each app combination you rely on, especially when one window contains a keyboard-heavy workflow, video controls or a dense professional interface.

Google says desktop windowing was developed with Samsung to enhance DeX. That makes DeX a relevant part of the platform direction, but Android 16 desktop windowing and a manufacturer’s DeX implementation are not interchangeable promises. On a supported Galaxy tablet, the practical question is not whether a marketing label says “three-way split.” Check whether the installed Android 16 build exposes desktop windowing, whether the tablet supports an external display and whether the three apps you need resize cleanly.
A practical decision guide
- Need exactly two apps in a predictable layout? Use ordinary split screen.
- Need three or more apps visible? Use desktop windowing on a supported large screen and arrange free-form windows.
- Working from a phone? Expect desktop windowing, if available, mainly when the phone or foldable is connected to a supported monitor.
- Using a narrow or non-resizable app? Check its behavior before depending on a three-window workflow.
- Want the least friction? Add a keyboard and mouse and use a landscape tablet or external display.
What Android 16 does not promise
- It does not promise three equal split-screen panes on every Android 16 device.
- It does not make desktop windowing available on every phone, tablet or foldable.
- It does not guarantee that every app will be readable or fully functional when resized.
- There is no published official statistic showing how many apps users typically run simultaneously.
Bottom line
Android 16 makes three-app multitasking plausible through desktop windowing, particularly on compatible tablets and connected-display desktops. Traditional split screen remains a two-app feature in Google’s documentation. Think of Android 16 as bringing desktop-style free-form windows to supported large screens—not as adding a universal three-way split-screen command.
