Yes—if your motherboard has a usable SATA port, your case has room for a drive, and your power supply has a free SATA power connector, you may be able to add internal storage without replacing the motherboard. Whether that saves you hundreds depends on local prices and what you would otherwise buy; there is no universal saving to count on.
What you can connect to a SATA port
A motherboard SATA port connects internal SATA storage, including 2.5-inch SATA solid-state drives (SSDs) and 3.5-inch hard disk drives (HDDs). Intel describes SATA as an interface for both drive types in its motherboard buying guide.

A SATA SSD needs two separate connections: a SATA data cable from the drive to the motherboard, and SATA power from the power supply. MSI’s storage installation guide outlines both. Check whether you already have a suitable cable and an available power connector before buying a drive.

Find your exact motherboard model and revision
Look up the model and revision printed on the board or shown in your system information, then consult that board’s manual. Port counts vary: MSI lists eight SATA 6 Gb/s ports for the PRO B550M WIFI6E, while ASRock lists six for the B550M Pro4. These are examples, not a guarantee about other boards.

Check for M.2 lane sharing
Some motherboards disable one or more SATA ports when an M.2 slot is occupied. The rule is specific to the board and sometimes to the slot used. For example, MSI’s MEG Z590 ACE manual says a drive in M2_2 disables SATA2, while a drive in M2_3 disables SATA5 and SATA6. Consult the manual’s storage or lane-sharing table rather than assuming a physically empty port is usable.
Choose the right storage interface for the job
M.2 describes a drive’s form factor, not its protocol: an M.2 drive can use SATA or PCIe. The motherboard’s M.2 socket must support the drive’s protocol, as Kingston explains in its M.2 compatibility guide.

Intel says common SATA 3.0 supports data transfer rates up to 6 Gbit/s; this is an interface maximum, not a promise of sustained drive throughput. PCIe is the higher-bandwidth interface in Intel’s guide. For a storage decision, consider the workload as well as peak interface rates: extra bandwidth matters more for some tasks than others.
Compare the real cost before deciding
An available SATA port can make use of the motherboard and power supply you already own, but the port alone does not establish a specific saving. Compare the capacity and current local price of the SATA drive with the actual alternative you are considering. Also account for whether you need a cable, a case mount, or another solution because the ports are already occupied.

- EXCELLENCE IN PERFORMANCE: Enjoy professional level SSD performance with 870 EVO, which maximizes the SATA interface limit to 560/530 MB/s sequential speeds, Accelerates write speeds and maintains long term high performance with a larger variable buffer
- INDUSTRY DEFINING RELIABILITY: Meet the demands of every task from everyday computing to 8K video processing, with up to 2,400 TBW
- MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: 870 EVO has been compatibility tested for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices. Interface- SATA 6GB/s, compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s interfaces
- Check usable SATA ports after accounting for any M.2 lane sharing.
- Compare like-for-like capacity at current local prices.
- Consider whether your workload benefits from the extra bandwidth of a PCIe drive.
- Confirm that the case can mount the drive and the PSU has the required SATA power connector.
Without a dated, comparable price check for your location and options, claims of savings “in the hundreds” should be treated as unverified, not a likely outcome.

Install and troubleshoot a SATA drive
- Check the manual: Confirm the board’s SATA port count, which ports remain active with your installed M.2 drives, and any drive compatibility notes.
- Check the case and PSU: Make sure there is a suitable mounting spot and a free SATA power connector.
- Connect the drive: Run a SATA data cable between the drive and an available motherboard port, and connect SATA power from the PSU.
- Check detection: If the drive does not appear in the operating system, verify both connections and board compatibility. Check whether the drive is detected in BIOS, then check the operating system’s disk management utility. MSI includes these checks in its storage troubleshooting guidance.
