Yes. An RTX 5070 gaming laptop can run many games at 1440p-class resolution. A well-powered model should handle 60 fps in a wide range of titles, while lighter games can run considerably faster. The demanding exceptions are modern ray-traced or poorly optimized games, where you may need lower settings, DLSS upscaling or frame generation. The GPU name alone is not enough to predict performance: check the laptop’s total graphics power (TGP), cooling, memory configuration and independent tests.
What 1440p means on a laptop
Standard 1440p is 2560 × 1440 pixels. Gaming laptops are also commonly sold with 2560 × 1600 panels, often called 1600p. A 1600p screen has the same 2560-pixel horizontal width but 1600 vertical pixels, so it renders about 11% more pixels than 1440p. Benchmarks at 1600p are therefore useful for judging 1440p-class performance, but they are not identical: a game that runs at 60 fps at 1600p has some additional headroom at 1440p, while a higher-refresh 1600p panel still demands more from the GPU than a 1440p panel.

When a specification says a laptop has a 1440p display, verify the actual panel resolution. Some listings use “QHD” for 2560 × 1440 and others use “WQXGA” for 2560 × 1600. Also check whether the panel’s refresh rate is 60 Hz, 165 Hz, 240 Hz or another value; the screen can only show as many native frames per second as its refresh rate allows.

| Specification | Listed value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| CUDA cores | 4,608 | Indicates the GPU’s parallel-processing resources, but does not by itself predict laptop gaming speed. |
| Boost-clock range | 1,425–2,347 MHz | The range reflects the operating limits used by different laptop designs and power settings. |
| Memory bandwidth | 384 GB/s | Higher bandwidth helps feed the GPU at high resolutions and with demanding textures. |
| Graphics memory | 8GB or 12GB GDDR7 | The exact capacity must be confirmed on the individual laptop listing. |
The 8GB and 12GB versions are both listed by NVIDIA. A report from Tom’s Hardware dated April 28, 2026 described the 12GB model as a capacity increase and said no officially announced bandwidth improvement had been reported. That report also cautioned that its detailed specification table was not confirmed by NVIDIA. More VRAM can reduce the chance of texture-related stutter at high settings, but the capacity number alone does not establish a different frame rate; the laptop’s power limit, cooling and other components still determine performance.
What published game tests show
The clearest publicly available figures come from a specific 2026 review of a Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 11 with an RTX 5070 configured with 12GB and a 2560 × 1600 display. The Tom’s Guide review tested complete laptop systems, not an isolated graphics card in a controlled laboratory. Its results show what this class of machine can do, rather than a guaranteed score for every RTX 5070 laptop.
| Game | Resolution and preset | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baldur’s Gate III | 2560 × 1600, High | More than 90 fps | A well-optimized role-playing game can run well above a 60-fps target at a resolution slightly higher than 1440p. |
| Final Fantasy XIV | 2560 × 1600, High (Laptop) | Peaks above 100 fps and tends to settle around 90 fps | This is suitable for a high-refresh display, although crowded scenes can vary. |
| Avowed | 2560 × 1600, Medium | About 59–61 fps | A demanding, poorly optimized title may need Medium settings to hold roughly 60 fps. |
| Black Myth: Wukong | 2560 × 1600, Cinematic | 27 fps on the 12GB Legion; 22 fps on a separately tested 8GB RTX 5070 laptop | Maximum settings in a very demanding game can be too heavy for a 60-fps target. These were different complete systems, so the gap cannot be attributed to VRAM capacity alone. |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 2560 × 1600, review-table settings | The 12GB Legion scored 6 fps more than the separately tested 8GB laptop | The comparison shows system-level variation, not a controlled test of memory capacity. |
The reviewer noted that the Legion could struggle to exceed 60 fps in intense games at its maximum resolution. There is no named multi-laptop average establishing a universal native-1440p frame rate for the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU, so treat these numbers as representative examples from identified review units, not a guarantee or population average.

Why two RTX 5070 laptops can perform differently
TGP and cooling
Total graphics power is one of the most important differences hidden behind the same GPU name. A higher TGP lets the chip sustain higher clocks, provided the cooling system can remove the extra heat. A thin laptop with a low power limit can therefore be slower than a larger model using the same RTX 5070 designation. PC Gamer’s 2026 laptop-GPU buying guide advises buyers targeting demanding games to look for about 115W or more. That is buying guidance, not a threshold that guarantees any particular frame rate. Confirm the manufacturer’s listed TGP and look for benchmarks of the exact configuration.
CPU, system memory and operating mode
CPU-heavy games, simulation titles and large multiplayer scenes can become processor-limited before the GPU reaches full utilization. The processor model, dual-channel system memory, amount of RAM, background applications and the laptop’s performance mode all affect results. A review performed in a plugged-in, high-performance mode is not directly comparable with a battery or quiet-mode test.
Graphics memory capacity
At 1440p, 8GB can be adequate in many games, especially when textures and ray tracing are configured sensibly. Newer releases with large texture packs or heavy ray-tracing effects can approach the limit, causing stutter or forcing texture reductions. The 12GB version provides more capacity, but it does not automatically make every game faster. Compare like-for-like systems and settings before assigning a performance difference to memory size.

Display and game settings
Native rendering at 2560 × 1440 or 2560 × 1600 is substantially more demanding than 1080p. Ray tracing, ultra-quality shadows, volumetric effects and cinematic texture presets can reduce frame rates sharply. Two reviews can therefore report very different numbers while both are accurate if their resolutions, presets or ray-tracing settings differ.
Native rendering, DLSS and frame generation
Native 1440p means the game renders every frame at 2560 × 1440. DLSS renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an output image at 1440p, trading some image detail for higher performance. Frame generation creates additional displayed frames between traditionally rendered frames. It can make motion appear smoother and raise the counter shown by an overlay, but those generated frames are not the same as increasing the game’s underlying rendered-frame rate.
When reading a benchmark, record three details:
- Whether the result is native resolution or uses DLSS upscaling.
- Which DLSS mode or image-quality setting is enabled.
- Whether frame generation or Multi Frame Generation is active.
For a responsive competitive game, prioritize a strong underlying frame rate and low latency, often with native rendering or a quality upscaling mode. For a visually demanding single-player game, DLSS and frame generation can be practical ways to maintain a smoother presentation after choosing an appropriate base performance level.

How to evaluate a specific RTX 5070 laptop
- Confirm the panel. Record the native resolution, refresh rate and whether the screen is 2560 × 1440 or 2560 × 1600.
- Find the exact GPU configuration. Check whether the RTX 5070 has 8GB or 12GB of GDDR7 and whether the listing states a TGP or maximum graphics power.
- Check independent tests at the same resolution. Prefer reviews that publish results for the games you play and identify the graphics preset, ray tracing, DLSS and frame-generation settings.
- Check the test conditions. Note the processor, RAM configuration, plugged-in performance mode, driver version and cooling design. A result from a different CPU or power limit is not a direct substitute.
- Set a realistic target. Decide whether you need a locked 60 fps, approximately 90 fps for a 90-Hz class experience, or the highest possible rate for a 165-Hz or faster panel.
- Plan for demanding outliers. If your priority games include poorly optimized releases or extensive ray tracing, allow for Medium or High settings, DLSS and possibly frame generation rather than assuming Ultra at native resolution.
Practical settings for a 1440p-class target
For a stable 60 fps
Start with High rather than Ultra, then reduce the most expensive options first: ray-traced lighting, reflections, volumetric fog, shadow quality and crowd density. Keep textures high if VRAM usage remains below the laptop’s capacity. If the game still dips below 60 fps, use DLSS Quality or Balanced before making broad reductions to image quality.
For 90 fps or higher
Use the game’s High or a customized High preset, disable unnecessary ray tracing and select a quality upscaler mode. A 90-fps target is realistic in lighter games and esports titles, but demanding releases may require a lower internal resolution or frame generation. Match the target to the panel’s refresh rate; rendering substantially more frames than the display can show has diminishing value.
For maximum visual quality
At native 1440p or 1600p with ray tracing, expect to tune settings on a game-by-game basis. Use the 12GB configuration’s additional memory capacity as useful headroom for textures, not as a promise that Ultra settings will sustain 60 fps. Monitor frame-time consistency, not only the average FPS counter.

Common buying and testing mistakes
- Assuming every RTX 5070 has the same speed: verify TGP, cooling and the exact model.
- Treating 1600p as identical to 1440p: 2560 × 1600 renders more pixels, so its results are a slightly tougher test.
- Comparing different presets: Ultra, High, Medium and a game’s “Laptop” preset can produce large differences.
- Counting generated frames as ordinary rendered frames: record DLSS and frame-generation status alongside the FPS number.
- Blaming VRAM for every gap: different CPUs, power limits, drivers and cooling systems can explain results between two laptops.
- Testing on battery: many gaming laptops reduce CPU and GPU power away from the charger; use the manufacturer’s intended plugged-in performance mode for comparable results.
Verdict
An RTX 5070 laptop is a credible 1440p gaming GPU. The published 1600p results show more than 90 fps in Baldur’s Gate III, around 90 fps in Final Fantasy XIV and roughly 59–61 fps in Avowed at Medium on one 12GB review system. They also show why expectations must be game-specific: Black Myth: Wukong reached only 27 fps at its Cinematic preset on that system, and the review reported difficulty exceeding 60 fps in intense games at maximum resolution.
Choose the laptop by its complete configuration rather than the badge. A model with a high, well-cooled TGP, suitable CPU and independently tested results is the safer 1440p purchase. Decide whether 8GB is sufficient for your settings or whether the 12GB variant’s extra capacity is worthwhile, then distinguish native rendering from DLSS and frame-generation results before comparing FPS figures.
