The scan can take up to 30 minutes. That proves a cable-scan option exists for the covered set and software; it does not prove that every onn model accepts every QAM signal.

Those labels are useful evidence that this particular television has a broadcast tuner and a cable connection, but they are not a promise of clear-QAM compatibility.
onn publishes manuals by model number rather than one universal manual for the brand. Its manual index contains many different product numbers and screen sizes. Features can therefore differ by model, region and software. A cable-scan menu on one onn TV should not be used as proof about another model.

- Find the complete model number. Look at the label on the rear of the television, the original packaging or the TV’s settings/about screen. Record every digit and suffix, including regional endings such as “-CA.” A family name or screen size alone is not enough.
- Open the matching onn manual and specification page. Use onn’s model-indexed documentation and select the exact product number. Avoid relying on a search result for a similarly sized set.
- Search the document for “QAM” and “clear QAM.” An explicit statement is the confirmation you need. If the document only says “digital tuner,” “analog/digital tuner,” “cable” or “coaxial,” treat QAM capability as unverified rather than inferred.
- Check the signal type from your provider. Ask whether the channels you want are unencrypted digital cable channels and whether a provider box is required. A scan cannot decode encrypted services.
- Contact onn support when the manual is silent. Give support the full model number and ask specifically whether that model can tune clear-QAM channels directly from a coaxial cable feed. Do not ask only whether it has a digital tuner; that question can produce an answer that does not settle QAM compatibility.
How the documented cable scan works
Menu names vary by model and software, so use these steps as the workflow described by onn, not as a universal menu map.
- Connect the live cable line from the wall or provider feed to the TV’s coaxial/cable connector. Push the connector on firmly; a loose connection can produce an empty or incomplete scan.
- From the home screen, open the Antenna TV or Live TV tile, depending on what your software displays.
- Choose Input setup and select the cable source rather than an antenna source when prompted.
- Start Find channels or the equivalent scan command. Keep the TV powered on while it searches.
- Allow as much as 30 minutes for the scan to finish. The duration is a workflow estimate in onn’s support instructions, not a guarantee that channels will be found.
- Test the results with a channel you know is unencrypted. A successful scan does not demonstrate that subscription or encrypted channels can be viewed without a provider box.
If your menu does not contain these labels, consult the manual for your model instead of selecting random scan modes. Some sets place the command under Settings, Channels, Tuner mode or Auto scan, and a firmware update can change wording.
Why a scan can find nothing even when the TV has a coax jack
The feed is encrypted
A cable company may deliver subscribed channels in an encrypted form intended for its set-top box, cable card or other authorized equipment. The TV can have a cable input and still be unable to display those channels directly. In that case, connect the provider’s box to the TV using the box’s available output and select that input on the onn set.

The TV’s QAM support is not confirmed
“Analog/Digital TV Tuner YES” does not identify which digital cable standards are supported. If the exact manual does not mention QAM, an empty scan is consistent with an unsupported signal, even if the connector and scan menu are present.
The cable is not connected to the intended source
Verify that the line is a live cable-company feed, not an antenna lead, an inactive wall outlet or a line that normally connects to a provider box. Splitters, damaged coax and loose connectors can also reduce signal quality enough to prevent detection.
The wrong scan mode is selected
An antenna scan and a cable scan search different channel sources. Reopen the tuner setup and choose the cable option shown for your model. If the TV offers only an antenna mode, the manual or onn support should clarify whether a cable mode exists.

The desired channels are outside the provider’s unencrypted lineup
Even a confirmed clear-QAM tuner receives only channels the provider leaves unencrypted and transmits in a compatible format. A scan is not a substitute for authorization, a subscription or a provider receiver.

When the provider supplies a box, tune channels with the box rather than the TV’s internal scan. Connect the box to an available input on the onn television, select that input, and use the box remote for channel changes. The exact connection depends on the outputs on the box and inputs on the TV; follow both devices’ manuals.

This arrangement avoids the unresolved QAM question because the provider equipment performs the channel tuning and decryption. The onn TV functions as the display. If the box is connected but the screen says “no signal,” check that the TV is on the matching HDMI or other input and that the box is powered on.

Do not confuse ATSC antenna tuners with QAM cable tuners
ATSC equipment is associated with over-the-air antenna reception. A listing for an external ATSC tuner, including listings in Walmart’s tuner category, is not evidence that the device can receive clear-QAM cable channels. Before considering an external tuner, verify three separate points in that device’s own specifications:
- It explicitly supports QAM or clear QAM, not only ATSC antenna standards.
- Its input and output connectors match your cable feed and onn TV.
- It is compatible with the provider’s signal and with the channels you intend to watch.
The available onn material does not identify a particular external tuner as a confirmed solution, so buying an antenna tuner solely because it says “digital” can leave the original problem unchanged.
A practical decision path
- Exact manual explicitly says clear QAM: Connect the cable feed and run the model’s cable scan. Expect only compatible, unencrypted channels.
- Manual says digital tuner or cable but never QAM: Consider QAM support unconfirmed. Ask onn support for a model-specific answer or use provider equipment.
- Provider requires a box: Use the box to tune channels and connect it to the TV’s available input.
- Older model with Air/Cable and Auto Scan: Treat the scan as evidence of a cable option only. The legacy 100002458 manual does not identify QAM.
- Considering an external tuner: Require an explicit clear-QAM specification and confirm the provider signal before purchasing.
What to record when comparing onn TVs
If you are choosing among models, make a short comparison sheet instead of relying on screen size or the presence of a coax connector. Record:
- the complete model number and region;
- the exact wording of the tuner specification;
- whether “QAM” or “clear QAM” is explicitly listed;
- whether your intended channels are unencrypted;
- whether the provider supplies or requires a set-top box; and
- which inputs are available for that box.
No two QAM-capable onn models are established by the available official material, so a ranking of onn televisions by QAM performance would overstate what is documented. The reliable comparison is model-by-model verification using those criteria.
Bottom line for an onn TV connected to a cable wall outlet
An onn television may include the hardware and menu needed for a cable scan, but a coaxial jack and a generic digital-tuner label do not answer the QAM question. For model 100069454-CA, the published specification confirms an analog/digital tuner and coaxial/cable connection while leaving QAM unstated. Check your exact model’s documentation for an explicit clear-QAM reference; if it is absent, obtain confirmation from onn or use the cable provider’s box.
