Sometimes—but only as a conditional, model-specific replacement. An Onn box may be an adequate Plex player when your files Direct Play and you use a separate Plex Media Server. It is not automatically a replacement for an NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro if you depend on the SHIELD to run the server, pass lossless surround audio, handle particular HDR formats, or transcode difficult files. The exact Onn model and hardware revision must be verified before making a codec-level comparison.
What “replace the Shield” means in a Plex setup
Plex has two jobs that are easy to confuse. A client is the app and playback device connected to your television. A Plex Media Server indexes and stores your library, then sends media to clients. One device can do both, but the requirements are different.

Replacing the Shield as a client
If your server already runs on a computer, NAS, or another always-on machine, the Onn box only needs to run the Plex app and decode the files your household watches. In this arrangement, the key questions are whether the Onn app can Direct Play your video, audio, container, and subtitle combination; whether it outputs your required HDR format; and whether its HDMI audio path works with your receiver or soundbar.
Replacing the Shield as a server
The SHIELD TV Pro can host Plex Media Server as well as act as a client. NVIDIA documents the Plex server feature in its SHIELD guide: Plex Media Server on SHIELD. If your current SHIELD stores or serves the library, an Onn client alone does not replace that function. You would need a separately supported server, storage, and network connection—or verified evidence that the particular Onn model can host the server, which is not established here.

What is documented about the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro
NVIDIA’s current product page identifies the SHIELD TV Pro as using a Tegra X1+ processor with 3 GB of RAM. It lists 4K HDR playback, Dolby Vision and HDR10, and passthrough for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-X, and DTS-HD. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements. See the full specification page at NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro.
| SHIELD TV Pro capability | What NVIDIA documents |
|---|---|
| Processor and memory | Tegra X1+ processor; 3 GB RAM |
| Video and HDR | 4K HDR playback; Dolby Vision and HDR10 listed |
| Audio passthrough | Dolby TrueHD, DTS-X, and DTS-HD listed |
| Plex role | Can run the Plex client and Plex Media Server |
When the SHIELD itself runs Plex Media Server, Plex documents hardware-accelerated transcoding limits. The server can hardware-decode H.264, H.265/HEVC, and MPEG-2, and hardware-encode to H.264. Plex warns that transcoding other source formats can have reduced performance. Those limitations apply to server transcoding on SHIELD; they do not describe what a client can Direct Play. The details are in Plex’s SHIELD server limitations article.
Why “Plex works” does not prove compatibility
Plex can deliver a title in three different ways. The app, server, media format, settings, and subtitles determine which path is selected, as explained in Plex’s Direct Play and Direct Stream documentation.

Direct Play
The client receives the original video and audio without server conversion. This is the least demanding path for the server and usually preserves the source quality. The client still has to support the file’s container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, and subtitle format.
Direct Stream
The server repackages compatible streams into a container the client accepts while leaving the underlying audio and video unchanged. It uses more server resources than Direct Play but is generally lighter than a full transcode.
Transcoding
The server converts one or more streams because the client cannot use them as delivered, or because a quality or bandwidth setting requires conversion. Transcoding consumes processor resources and can become the difference between smooth playback and buffering. Subtitle incompatibility is especially important: Plex may need to burn subtitles into the video, forcing a video transcode even when the underlying movie would otherwise play directly.

For that reason, a short 1080p file may work perfectly while a 4K remux with lossless audio and image-based subtitles fails. A Plex format table for one platform should not be treated as a specification for every Android TV box; Plex explicitly cautions that compatibility depends on the app and platform. Its general format guidance is available at Plex supported media formats.
The Onn model is the deciding unknown
“Onn streaming box” is not a sufficient hardware description. Different generations and regional versions can have different processors, memory, HDMI behavior, operating-system versions, HDR support, audio passthrough, USB ports, and networking. An official-domain search for Onn 4K Pro hardware specifications did not establish a current, authoritative specification set for this comparison.
Do not infer that an Onn device supports a particular codec, Dolby Vision, HDR10, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X, Ethernet, USB storage, or Plex Media Server merely because another Onn model—or another Android TV device—does. Record the exact model name, model number, operating-system version, and hardware revision from the device label or its system information screen before deciding.

A practical replacement test
Use your own library rather than a generic “Plex works” claim. The following procedure separates client limitations from server limitations.
- Inventory the demanding titles. Choose representative files: a normal H.264 movie, an HEVC/H.265 title, a 4K HDR title, a file with your usual surround soundtrack, and a title with the subtitle type you regularly use. Note the container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, HDR format, and subtitle format shown by your library tools.
- Confirm the server location. Decide whether the Onn will connect to an existing Plex Media Server or whether you expect the box to host one. If it is client-only, verify that the server is wired or otherwise stable enough to deliver the largest files.
- Install and sign in to Plex on the exact Onn model. Use the same account and playback-quality settings you use on the SHIELD. Keep the television, receiver, and HDMI cables unchanged so that the box is the variable being tested.
- Play each test title and inspect the Plex dashboard. The session should identify Direct Play, Direct Stream, or Transcode. Record which stream triggered a conversion; do not judge only by whether the opening minute played.
- Test subtitles separately. Play a title with subtitles disabled, then with your normal subtitle track enabled. If enabling subtitles changes the session to a video transcode or causes buffering, the subtitle path—not simply the video codec—is the constraint.
- Test the complete audio chain. Select the lossless and object-based tracks you actually use. Check the receiver or soundbar’s input display and listen for dropouts, fallback formats, or silence. A box specification alone cannot prove passthrough through your television and audio equipment.
- Repeat after a cold start. Launch the box from power-off, start playback, seek through the file, pause and resume, and watch a full high-bitrate section. This catches memory, network, and thermal problems that a brief demonstration can miss.
When an Onn box can be a sensible client replacement
- Your Plex Media Server runs elsewhere and remains available whenever you watch.
- Your regular files Direct Play or Direct Stream on the exact Onn model.
- You do not require an audio or HDR format that the Onn’s verified specifications omit.
- Your receiver, television, and HDMI configuration accept the formats the box actually outputs.
- Your largest files play without buffering over the connection you intend to use.
Under those conditions, paying for the SHIELD’s server capability or documented high-end passthrough may provide no practical benefit for that television. The conclusion is about your tested workload, not every Onn box or every Plex library.

When the SHIELD remains the safer choice
- You use it as the household server. The SHIELD’s Plex Media Server role is documented, while the corresponding Onn capability is not established.
- You rely on lossless or object-based audio. NVIDIA explicitly lists Dolby TrueHD, DTS-X, and DTS-HD passthrough for the SHIELD TV Pro. An Onn replacement requires model-specific confirmation and a compatible receiver path.
- You need Dolby Vision or HDR10. The SHIELD page lists both. Do not assume an Onn model supports either mode without authoritative specifications and a display test.
- Your library often needs transcoding. SHIELD server transcoding has documented hardware support for H.264, H.265/HEVC, and MPEG-2 decoding, with H.264 encoding; other source formats can reduce performance.
- You combine server duties with demanding network use. NVIDIA recommends Ethernet when using Plex Media Server and GeForce NOW simultaneously, illustrating why a stable wired connection matters for a busy SHIELD setup. The guidance is at NVIDIA’s SHIELD Plex support article.
Troubleshooting the replacement test
The dashboard shows Transcode
Identify whether the trigger is video, audio, container, bandwidth, or subtitles. Try a compatible subtitle track or no subtitles, then compare the session. If the server is the SHIELD, remember that its documented hardware acceleration covers specific codecs and that unsupported source formats can perform worse during conversion.

Video plays but audio is missing
Check the selected audio track, the Onn’s audio-output setting, the television’s passthrough behavior, and the receiver’s supported formats. A television may accept fewer formats than a direct receiver connection, so test the same HDMI topology you plan to keep.
Playback buffers while Direct Playing
Direct Play still requires enough network throughput for the original file. Test Ethernet where available, inspect the server’s upload or local-network path, and compare a lower-bitrate file. Buffering in this case does not prove that the Onn decoder is inadequate.
HDR looks wrong
Verify that the title is actually HDR, that the television input is configured for enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI where required, and that the box reports the intended output mode. Compare the same title and display input with the SHIELD before changing several settings at once.
Bottom line
An Onn streaming box can replace an NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro for Plex when it is used only as a client and your own files, subtitles, HDR requirements, audio chain, and network all pass the model-specific test. It is not a defensible universal replacement claim because the exact Onn hardware is unresolved. If you use the SHIELD as your Plex server or depend on its documented Dolby Vision, HDR10, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-X, or DTS-HD passthrough, keep the SHIELD unless an authoritative specification and hands-on test prove the Onn meets the same requirements.
